Priests Must Leave Their “Fortresses”, Says Francis
La Stampa-Vatican Insider ^ | 10/20/18 | Christopher Lamb

Pope Francis has said vocations are best generated by pastorally minded priests living in the real world while begging bishops to carefully vet who they ordain.

Speaking at a Vatican conference today, Francis told an audience of cardinals, bishops and vocation experts to re-think their vocations ministry so it did not simply become a bureaucratic pastoral programme.

The Pope told the gathering that their work involves “going out” and listening to people: he pointed out that his own vocation was not the result of a “nice theory” but having experienced the “merciful gaze of Jesus over me.”

In order for this to happen, Francis explained, the Church should stop reducing Catholicism to a “recipe of rules” while clergy needed to break out of their closed worlds.

“It's sad when a priest lives only for himself, enclosed in the safe fortress of the rectory, the sacristy or among a restricted group of loyal followers,” the Pope told the International Conference on Vocations, organised by the Congregation for Clergy. “On the contrary, we are called to be shepherds among the people, capable of showing pastoral care and taking the time to welcome and listen to everyone, especially young people.”

Francis stressed that the world needs “mature and balanced” priests and appealed to bishops to be vigilant when vetting candidates for ordained ministry.

“When it comes to vocations to the priesthood and those entering the seminary, I beg you to discern the truth, to have a shrewd and cautious look,” Francis explained. “I say this especially to brother bishops: vigilance and prudence.”

“It's sad when a priest lives only for himself, enclosed in the safe fortress of the rectory, the sacristy or among a restricted group of loyal followers,” the Pope told the International Conference on Vocations, organised by the Congregation for Clergy.

When they opened the windows in the late 60’s, nuns left in droves. He should be the first to leave his fortress.

Yes, be vigilant and prudent: wake up to the fraud that is Francis and actually preach and teach the Faith of our forefathers. Until you do you are just part of the problem.

The Catholic church is awash in scandal from its heavy money dealings to its blatant homosexual protection of peodophile “priests” within it’s ranks...how this abomination of a pope dares show his face and spread his political views is beyond me...I adhere to no organized religious group but DO think that the CHRISTIAN outlook is the only form of morals for all of us imperfect beings to exist to a reasonable extent....all life is not precious, that is my animal farm joke.

I take it the litmus test for Priesthood will be adopting a “Who am I to judge?” mentality.

At what point does heresy become apostate?

Yeah, whatever happened to "who am I to judge?"

Now he wants bishops to be "vigilant" and "prudent".

Homos get a pass, but "rigid", faithful Catholics get shown the door.

“...enclosed in the safe fortress of the rectory...” This is the kind of Marxist and Liberation Theology that was promoted by heretics in the Church in the past. Us/them; Church/world; Traditional/progressive; Trent/Vatican II.

Setting up false alternatives is a simply fallacy that shows an unethical desire to deceive.

I don’t suppose he’s been to Northern Nigeria where muslims murdered 48 Christians a week ago...

Matter of fact, haven’t heard him utter a word about it.

He may not have heard about it in his fortress.

I absolutely hate, hate, hate the implied opposition of the pastoral and the doctrinal! The two are not in opposition. I would prefer if the Pope would not put down doctrine when promoting pastoral sensitivity and compassion, it should be possible.

I once saw the appointment book for a Franciscan priest. It was filled with appointments from 5am to midnight (community prayer and Mass included) EVERY DAY. It was actually horrifying to see. He had no free time at all.

When is he supposed to get out amongst the sheep, Francis? Between midnight and 5 am?

There has been a trend, albeit a small one, for Catholic widowers to become priests. They have all the maturity of age AND have had the experience of marriage and children.
They are new priests but fully mature men.
It's a good trend.

I hope I'm not out of line by being positive. :o)

If you are a Catholic then you KNOW that we always pray for vocations to the priesthood. I attend daily Mass and hear this every day.

If you aren't Catholic, now you know.

Can you imagine B16 belittling other priests? The only priests that Francis should be criticizing are other liberal priests like himself for not preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. Priests that actually preach the truth are belittled and demoted by Francis’. Only speak about global warming and gun control and you’ll be elevated to cardinal.
