Christ's Outward Appearance

“. . . Being found in appearance as a man” (Philippians 2:8).

Many people view Christ only as a man, but He is God.

After winning a gold medal at the 1924 Olympics in Paris, Scottish runner Eric Liddell served as a missionary in China; he died in a prison camp during World War II. The camp’s prisoners loved Eric, for he served them so unselfishly. It was only at his funeral that they first learned he was an Olympic hero. They had had no idea of his full identity.

Most people didn’t realize Christ’s full identity either, for He was “found in appearance as a man” (Phil. 2:8). At first glance that phrase seems like a repetition of the end of verse 7, “being made in the likeness of men.” We could paraphrase verse 8 to read, “He was discovered to appear as a man.” The difference between that and verse 7 is a shift in focus. In verse 8 we view the humiliation of Christ from the viewpoint of those who saw Him. Christ was the God-man, but as people looked at Him, they saw the “appearance” (Greek, schema, “outward form”) of a man. Paul was implying that though Christ appeared to be a man, there was much more to Him that could not naturally be seen.

For Christ to become man was humbling enough. For Him not to have been recognized must have been humiliating. He performed miracles and taught authoritatively, yet the typical responses were: “You are a Samaritan and have a demon” (John 8:48) and, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does He now say, ‘I have come down out of heaven’?” (John 6:42). Because their minds were darkened by sin, people recognized His humanity but could not see His deity. They could not recognize who He really was. They not only treated the King of kings as a man but as the worst of men—a criminal.

Unlike people who don’t recognize Christ’s true identity, let’s honor Him through a life of worship and obedience.

Suggestions for Prayer

Worship Christ for who He really is—the King of kings and Lord of lords. Praise Him for this truth in your prayer time.

For Further Study

Christ was not only fully man but also fully God. Read the following verses in which Christ Himself bears testimony that He is God: Luke 22:69-70; John 10:30, 37-38; 12:45; 14:7-10. What else should one find in these verses?

Isiah 42.5
Thus saith God,the Lord,he that created the heaven.

So you just take it upon yourself to put those commas in where you want them, eh???

Isa 42:5 Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:

It is not talking about two or three people there it I SD only talking about one, that is God.

I supplied plenty of other scripture to prove the point...You couldn't comment on those eh???

It works the same with or with out the comas. read it
Like you have it down, it is even easier to see your
mistake.

As for the other scriptures you gave I did not comment
on them because it is the same talking point I have heard
from a hundred others who go to the same teachers.

Perhaps; but what about any lurkers reading your words?

Have THEY 'heard from a hundred others who go to the same teachers' as well??

Don't you think you should educate THEM or just be content to let us other folks supply information to them???

Is that kinda like, 'don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is already make up'??? I don't care what you believe but hundreds of millions of Christians accept the Trinity as being eternal, based on scriptural evidence so when you post that it is not, you're likely to get challenged, with scriptural proof...

Isool, it is plain that you have a problem comprehending what
I am saying, so I can not imagine you ever comprehending any
Thing you read in scripture.

That is why I assume you are paroting a hired preacher.

Yes, the trinity was here but until Jesus was born the
son was only spirit.

I will try to explain this more when I get to a computer
but flesh and blood can not inherit the kingdom of God, it
can not go there..

So there is no way Jesus in the flesh could have been eternal
but his spirit could.

Later.

Yes Iscool, the trinty probably is eternal although i don`t know.

I have never denied the trinity and incidentally i have always thought of Jesus as my lord and savior.

What i don`t believe is that flesh is eternal, Paul says in 1 cor 50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God;

And i don`t believe there was ever any flesh and blood bodies in heaven.

Jeremiah 1
5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

It does not tell us what Jeremiah`s name was before but he was not a flesh and blood man until he came forth from the womb.
Isaih 7
14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

In Isaih 42 God chooses the one who will become the son of God
42:1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

Niv
“Here is my servant, whom I uphold,
my chosen one in whom I delight;
I will put my Spirit on him,
and he will bring justice to the nations.

It does not matter if it is i have or i will it is something that is to take place about 700 years in the future.

Fulfilled

Luke 1:26-38
The Angel Gabriel Comes to Mary

26 Six months after Elizabeth had become pregnant, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a city in Galilee. 27 The angel went to a virgin promised in marriage to a descendant of David named Joseph. The virgin’s name was Mary.

28 When the angel entered her home, he greeted her and said, “You are favored by the Lord! The Lord is with you.”

29 She was startled by what the angel said and tried to figure out what this greeting meant.

30 The angel told her,

“Don’t be afraid, Mary. You have found favor[a] with God.
31
You will become pregnant, give birth to a son,
and name him Jesus.
32
He will be a great man
and will be called the Son of the Most High.
The Lord God will give him
the throne of his ancestor David.
33
Your son will be king of Jacob’s people forever,
and his kingdom will never end.”

34 Mary asked the angel, “How can this be? I’m a virgin.”

35 The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come to you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy child developing inside you will be called the Son of God.

Will be called the son of God, there was no flesh and blood
son of God until then.

Back to Isaih 42
We do not know who God was talking to but it is obvious he was not talking to the holy spirit why would he say he would put the spirit on you to the holy spirit?

Was it an angel who was incarnated and became the son of God? what was his name? was it Jesus? that is possible but it is certain it was not Jesus in the flesh.

This is just the way i see it and i could be all wrong as we can put scripture down all day but if we do not understand them it is useless.

But we need to get back to the premise of this subject, some of you lead me off of the subject just to avoid the real issue.

Here is the issue
Both the Catholics and Protestants claim to believe that Jesus was God in the flesh,

Any one who believes that Jesus is God in the flesh is awful danged stupid if they then deny that Mary is the mother of God.

She was the mother of Jesus if Jesus was God in the flesh why would Mary refuse to still be his mother?

This takes no Bible scriptures it is common sense and it don`t take much of that.

Philip asked to be shown The Father Almighty. Jesus told him that all they could see of The Father was where The Father almighty was passing through their dimensional capabilities, as Jesus. They could sense God only where God was in their limits well. The analogy is a three dimensional object being passed through a two dimensional plane; A being in the two-plane can only sense the three-plane object where it intersects the two-plane; thus a sphere is sensed as merely a series of circles getting larger then smaller as the sphere passes through the plane.

Read "Flatland" by Edwin A. Abbott and you'll get the sense of it. God is a "higher dimensional" being than us.
