Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Story of Joseph

(Old Testament)

Genesis 37

Joseph’s Dreams

37 Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.

2 This is the account of Jacob’s family line.

Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.

3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate[a] robe for him. 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.

5 Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. 6 He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: 7 We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”

8 His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.

9 Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”

10 When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?” 11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

Joseph Sold by His Brothers

12 Now his brothers had gone to graze their father’s flocks near Shechem, 13 and Israel said to Joseph, “As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them.”

“Very well,” he replied.

14 So he said to him, “Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me.” Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron.

When Joseph arrived at Shechem, 15 a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, “What are you looking for?”

16 He replied, “I’m looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?”

17 “They have moved on from here,” the man answered. “I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.’”

So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. 18 But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.

19 “Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. 20 “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”

21 When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said. 22 “Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.

23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe he was wearing— 24 and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it.

25 As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.

26 Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood? 27 Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.” His brothers agreed.

28 So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels[b] of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.

29 When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes. 30 He went back to his brothers and said, “The boy isn’t there! Where can I turn now?”

31 Then they got Joseph’s robe, slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood. 32 They took the ornate robe back to their father and said, “We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son’s robe.”

33 He recognized it and said, “It is my son’s robe! Some ferocious animal has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.”

34 Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and mourned for his son many days. 35 All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. “No,” he said, “I will continue to mourn until I join my son in the grave.” So his father wept for him.

36 Meanwhile, the Midianites[c] sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.

1. Genesis 37:3 The meaning of the Hebrew for this word is uncertain; also in verses 23 and 32.
2. Genesis 37:28 That is, about 8 ounces or about 230 grams

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven,
Hallowed be Your Name!
You Are Holy, Righteous and Just,
And yet, You reach out to Your Creation,
And Touch us daily with Your Holy Word!
How we Love to Worship You,
For Your Alone Are The One True God.
Omnipotent
Omniscient,
Almighty and Omnipresent,
You Are The GREAT I AM,
The Rock of Ages,
The Ancient of Days.
It is a Good thing to Give You Thanks!

As we return to the Torah
For this Wonderful, Redemptive Story of Joseph,
We Are Reminded of the duplicity and acrimony that exists in Families to this day
And even in Nations, Abba Father,
Because these Twelve Brothers were not only a Family,
They were a Nation Being Born.
Thank You For this Timeless and Magnificent Story,
Which teaches us the horrible consequences of Jealousy, Favoritism, and Duplicity.

LORD, We ask that You fill the leaders of the USA with Your Spirit, that they may make Holy and Righteous decisions.
Bring the Truth To Light, Abba Father,
And expose all the Liars!

May the Leaders of Our Own Beloved USA
Receive Wisdom from You
to do the Right Thing.

We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Sorry for the brief hiatus in our daily meditations, but I had to flee my house with my dawg and four delicate guitars to my brother's house 25 miles away. Our entire community was without power in the midst of a raging New England storm, and my little mobile home was 35 degrees indoors. At one point, I found myself shivering in my bed under a pile of blankets and quilts, when I leaped up, put my jacket on over my PJ's, grabbed the dawg and the guitars and drove in the windy, rainy, darkness (no streetlights or traffic controls) and arrived around midnight. My brother has all the modern conveniences except a computer because he hates them...so alas, no FRee Republic for me! All my siblings live in New England now, so, if there is gas in the car, we can get together.

I only have half the number of siblings than Joseph had (and my Dad had only a quarter as many wives LOL), but our childhoods were not free from conflict. For some reason, perhaps because I am like a goldfish that expands to fill whatever space I am given, I always had my own room growing up, when none of my other siblings did. Easels, Drawing Boards, Guitars, half-finished projects, stereo system, schoolbooks, paintings, 3D projects, etc, filled my room to bursting. My next-older sister rejoiced when I married at 18, as she inherited my bedroom!

We are all dear friends today, but once in a while it is mentioned to me about the "bedroom situation" growing up. I STILL don't understand how it worked out that way, as 6 kids divided between three bedrooms equals 2 kids per bedroom, but it just was. I know that my parents were blissfully unaware of the little jealousies that were going on, because they never showed any "favoritism" in any other way except that.

The Story of Joseph presents a far more "dysfunctional" family situation, and the jealousy it produced had the potential of coming to MURDER. Jacob seemed clueless about the slighting of his other sons as he showered his Favorite with affection and gifts. It was a lot more serious than a question of bedrooms!

As we shall see, the brothers end up fleeing to Joseph for refuge and sustenance later in the story. And I had planned this study long before the Nor'easter hit.

Coincidence? I think NOT! LOL!

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

" . . . Behold, the sun and the moon and the
eleven stars made obeisance to me."

Stained Glass, Chartres

_ ND Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.

These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and
the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.

And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.

And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.

And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:

For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.

And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.

And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.

And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.

As we return to the Torah
For this Wonderful,
Redemptive Story of Joseph,
We Are Reminded of the duplicity and acrimony that exists
in Families to this day
And even in Nations, Abba Father,
Because these Twelve Brothers were not only a Family,
They were a Nation Being Born.
Thank You For this
Timeless and Magnificent Story,
Which teaches us the horrible consequences of Jealousy, Favoritism, and Duplicity.

Wow, talk about wording and timing. It brings to mind one of my favorite pages and quotes:

As we have already seen, early on Joseph is linked to the fulfillment of Jacob's legacy.

These are the generations of Jacob, Joseph was seventeen years old ...[Genesis 37:2]

At the outset, the Torah connects Jacob with Joseph. Of all his sons specifically Joseph holds the key to not only Jacob's but the family's mission.

Joseph From the Kabbalistic Perspective

There's one place in the Tanakh where the word key (מפתח) is placed/hidden in the final letters of the words in a phrase (the sofei teivos), and nowhere does it appear in the beginning letters (roshei teivos). The numbers of letters in the words also make this key appear at a skip of four, Gen 41:45:

שם יוסף צפנת פענח

"shem Yoseph Tzaphnat Pa'ane'ach"

The name of Joseph is Tzaphnat Pa'ane'ach, which means a cipher decipherer, a revealer of the hidden. It's the perfect place to hide a key, because noone's looking there.

The brothers said snidely, "We shall see what will become of his dreams."

8. And his brothers said to him, Shall you indeed reign over us? or shall you indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him even more for his dreams, and for his words:
9. And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brothers, and said, Behold, I have again dreamed a dream; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me:
10. And he told it to his father, and to his brothers; and his father rebuked him, and said to him, What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow down ourselves to you to the earth:
11. And his brothers envied him; but his father kept the matter in mind

Rachel had already passed away at that point, but she didn't really die because as it is with her soulmate Jacob, truth is eternal. Jacob was given the truth (Mic 7:20) after serving another seven years, but it was but a few days to him, for the love he had toward her. emet, truth (n. fem.)

You've got to figure that if Joseph (in whom the Spirit of Elohim is, as was exclaimed by the Pharaoh himself) could set up a whole-hearted family rectification that reunited all the brothers together in love, wiping away the jealousy and animosity because they all saw the light (and there was none of that "I told you so" business, only pure joy and love)...

... then Joseph could to do the same to reunite Jacob and Esav.

That's a tall order, but who else could pull something like that off? If he could do the harder thing (in reuniting twelve), then he could surely accomplish the lighter thing (in reuniting two).

Whom Rachel saw when Joseph was born, such that she gave Joseph his name:

And she called his name Joseph; and said, "The Lord shall add to me another son" ~ Rachel Imenu

It's the Longview.

Give the truth to Jacob, and the offspring of that union is Joseph, the one in whom the Spirit of Elohim is. You can see that in (among other things) the design of his beautiful coat, which is a coat of stripes (passim). Same word is used for rails of train tracks. It's the classic image in perspective 101 (specifically the long view): parallel lines coming to a vertex (code-code) at Har Zion er the horizon. It's called the vanishing point, which is the root meaning of the word olam, eternity. It's the image of a ladder going to heaven, yet never leaving the ground.

As we have already seen, early on Joseph is linked to the fulfillment of Jacob's legacy.

Genesis 28, before Joseph was even born:

12. And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it:
13. And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, to you will I give it, and to your seed:
14. And your seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south; and in you and in your seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed:
15. And, behold, I am with you, and will keep you in all places where you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you, until I have done that about which I have spoken to you:
16. And Jacob awoke from his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not:
17. And he was afraid, and said, How awesome is this place! this is no other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven:

It never ends (pun not intended, but..) because while looking at the image I read verse 12 and what runs along train tracks but trains. Train: rachevet. But that's not the only meaning of rachevet. Turns out is it also a... "ladder". ?? I'd never seen that so I consulted Oxford English-Hebrew because it's big. It told me more (under the entry for ladder): 2. " רַכֶּבֶת" (flaw in tights, etc.)

Everyone has seen that happen. Those things run right down the leg and are really obvious:

sciatic nerve damage ---> knee weakened

Haman hated Mordecai the Jew because he did not bow.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gid_hanasheh

Gen 28: Jacob's "train" dream
Gen 30: birth of Joseph
Gen 32: Wrestling match, Jacob's "injury", Jacob renamed Israel
Gen 35: Benoni born (firstborn and first named of Israel's sons, whisked away along with the soul of his mother)

Back to the wrestling match,

And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I beg you, your name; And he said, Why is it that you ask after my name? And he blessed (ויברך) him there:

"And he blessed" = 238 = Rachel = "And there was light"

Besides, if you pick up the vav (the first letter of the next verse) it reads: And he blessed him is his name.

And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day:

Ben-oni: "son of my [Rachel's] strength"

It has been 3570 years since Rachel's soul went out from Bethlehem, 51 (Edom) x 70 years, the end of Galut Edom (גלות אדום), which is the same as Bethlehem (= 490, 70 x 7). There's a midrash about that too (Rachel's mercy bringing the end to the exile after 70 years).

I love these storylines within storylines, timelines within timelines, reading between the lines. Great stuff with timetables, the trains running on time and in the right direction all along.

At the outset, the Torah connects Jacob with Joseph. Of all his sons specifically Joseph holds the key to not only Jacob's but the family's mission.

Feel the love! Maphte'ach, key, = 528, which is the sum of the numbers 1-32 (lev, heart). Just thought I'd toss that in while I'm at it. Key of the House of David, the heart of love. Bethlehem, where David was born. David even said to Jonathan that it was his city (1 Sam 20:6).

It's the place in the text where David had to hide out in the field until the third day in the evening. Makes sense, because who would be looking there.

Bring the Truth To Light, Abba Father,

But then just the other day Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman visited St. Mark's Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Cairo which sends a powerful signal of at least this much rapprochement in light of the Saudi's heretofore profound Wahabi Islamism. Add to it bin Salman's recent record price acquisition of da Vinci's Salvator Mundi.

Then consider Saudi Arabia's recent thawing of the desert ice twixt they and Israel.

Something surely seems in the mix. Could it really presage something good?
