I wonder if it’s a greater “abuse” to receive communion standing in a rushed line instead of kneeling. As a small step, what about putting a simple prix dieu at the head of the communion line and everyone kneels to receive, either in the hand or on the tongue.
This gets away from the seemingly unresolvable controversy of hand or tongue, but instills a reverence that could evolve into better understanding of eucharist?
When I was a little boy in the 60’s I served as an altar boy. This was in the days when Communion was given on the tongue while kneeling at the altar rail. When the priest came to give my older brother communion I rapped my brother in the neck with the paten. Not only did Father give my a good clout after Mass but my brother and I got into a fight as well. I can’t be the only altar boy that did that.
