A fact to nail down right off the bat when finding the dividing line between these two spirits is that ... all bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon. To explain — whiskey is a catch-all term for spirits distilled from fermented grain mash; this can include any combination of grains — think corn, rye, barley, and wheat. Bourbon is a subcategory of whiskey with distinctive details. According to the American Bourbon Association, for whiskey to earn the bourbon label, it must contain at least 51% corn in its grain mix. Additionally, it needs to be: distilled to...

In the final years of his legendary life, Popcorn Sutton put his wife up on a pedestal – and on the catwalk above the 2,500-gallon pots where his moonshine was being distilled. It’s only fitting the woman the notorious moonshiner was sweet on learned to stir the sugar. “He made the best moonshine this side of the Mississippi, and I don’t care what anybody else says,” Pam Sutton told Knox News. “A lot of these so-called moonshiners would come and buy it from Popcorn and take it back home and sell it as their own and tell people they made...

Molson Coors, best known for brewing Coors Light and Miller Lite, is acquiring Blue Run Spirits, a cult favorite high-end bourbon and rye whiskey brand, for an undisclosed price, exclusively told to CNN. It’s part of the company’s pivot to becoming a broader beverage company focusing on drinks beyond beer, especially since US spirit sales surpassed beer sales last year for the first time ever. Blue Run is a Kentucky-based startup that makes premium bourbon whiskeys with prices ranging from $100 to $250 for a bottle. Five people came together that have a “common love” for bourbon and created the...

For a distiller to legally label their whiskey as “Bourbon,” they must meet specific criteria. #NationalBourbonDay The whiskey must be 51 percent corn. Last year's release is going for up to $1,000 on the secondary market.Russell's Reserve 13-Year-Old BourbonRussell's Reserve When you think of exorbitantly expensive and frustratingly elusive bourbon, the usual brands come to mind: Pappy Van Winkle, Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, Old Forester Birthday Bourbon. But Russell’s Reserve, part of the Wild Turkey family, has made its mark on the world of extreme bourbon fandom with the second release of its highly coveted 13-year-old expression. Russell’s Reserve 13-Year-Old Bourbon is the oldest age statement offering from the brand, and people went crazy for it when it first came out last year....

BOURBON COUNTY, Ky. -- About 250 years ago, farmers looking for a way to make their surplus corn crop profitable decided to distill it. Today, that leftover grain has become a billion-dollar industry and a symbol of the Bluegrass State's identity, economy and culture. "How bourbon came about is (what) ... the American spirit looks like: business, independence, freedom, a little bit of luck and a lot of perseverance," said Justin Thompson. Thompson and his colleague Justin Sloan are the proprietors of The House of Bourbon, the world's largest bourbon store, located on West Main Street in Lexington right across...

The Smoking Gun reports an inebriated motorist assured Florida police that he was not drinking while driving, but only swigging from a bottle of Jim Beam bourbon when his vehicle paused at stop signs and traffic signals, according to a police report. Earle Gustavas Stevens, 69, was arrested two weeks ago for driving his Mercury Grand Marquis while under the influence. The Vero Beach resident was nabbed after a driver called 911 to report that Stevens’s car repeatedly tapped her bumper while they were in a McDonald’s drive-thru lane. When a sheriff’s deputy contacted Stevens, he reeked of alcohol,...

The Best Bourbon Whiskeys To Drink On The Rocks

Whiskey purists will likely try and demean you if you drink anything on the rocks or with a little water. They want you to sip it straight, unchilled. That’s patently ridiculous. Yes, some whiskeys are crafted to be taken neat. But even the super svelte whiskeys out there will likely bloom in the glass with a few drops of water or a single rock. Moreover, a good bourbon on ice can actually lead to a whole new set of flavors. Which is some cool chemistry, when you think about it. What happens is twofold. One, the bourbon materially changes when...

A fire that destroyed a Jim Beam rickhouse filled with about 45,000 barrels of aging bourbon in Versailles, Kentucky, continued to burn Thursday and has sent runoff into nearby waterways. Woodford County Emergency Management Director Drew Chandler said in a telephone interview the only thing left burning is ethanol fumes. Officials believe letting the fumes burn will have less environmental impact than spraying the fire with water, which could wash the bourbon into a nearby creek that flows into the Kentucky River. An unknown amount of bourbon has already entered the water and was clearly visible on the Kentucky River...
