Dartmouth University’s men’s basketball team voted to unionize on Tuesday, bringing them one step closer to becoming the first collegiate labor union. The whole team participated in a 13-2 vote in favor of joining the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 560. The school will have until March 12 to file an objection to the union election with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). After objections are filed, there will be 10 days for both parties to file a request for an appeal to the decision. The school has already put out a statement emphasizing the athletes are not employees,...

Nearly four years after announcing it would temporarily remove the testing requirement for applicants, Dartmouth has announced it is reinstating the SAT.When Dartmouth suspended its standardized testing requirement for undergraduate applicants in June 2020, it was a pragmatic pause taken by most colleges and universities in response to an unprecedented global pandemic. At the time, we imagined the resulting "test-optional" policy as a short-term practice rather than an informed commentary on the role of testing in our holistic evaluation process. Nearly four years later, having studied the role of testing in our admissions process as well as its value as...

Dartmouth will reinstate the standardized test requirement for applicants to the Class of 2029 and beyond, according to a campus-wide email from President Sian Leah Beilock. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dartmouth adopted a test-optional policy for applicants to the Classes of 2025, 2026 and 2027 and a test-recommended policy for applicants to the Class of 2028, according to Lee Coffin, Vice President and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid. “The reactivation [of the test-required policy] has been modeled on a very comprehensive research study by a group of faculty,” Coffin said in an interview with The Dartmouth. According...

I was scheduled to speak last week at Dartmouth College by invitation of the chapter College Republicans and Turning Point USA. The Thursday “Extremism in America” event was meant to highlight America’s long history with far-left violent extremism, a subject politicians and media oft ignore and deny. Gabriel Nadales, a former member of California militant leftist groups, was the co-speaker. But we never got to step on stage to a live audience. Soon after the event was announced, Antifa and its army of online trolls threatened violence to shut it down. In turn, Dartmouth administrators gave the extremists exactly what...

Dartmouth College Republicans hosted three up-and-coming conservative voices in an event Sunday night. Remarkably, all three of these articulate, patriotic voices are young:North Carolinian Madison Cawthorn is the youngest Congressional House Member in the nation at age 26;Congressional hopeful and rising star Karoline Leavitt presents a very strong case (at age 23) why she should join him; andAlex Bruesewitz (24) is a proven campaign strategist who schools career politicians. From left to right: Alexander Bruesewitz, Madison Cawthorn, Karoline Leavitt (Photo by author)But for the Dartmouth College Democrats, what united the three was their allegedly intolerable political views. Predictably, there was...

America is ALREADY in a recession that could be as bad as 2008: Dartmouth College prof David Blanchflower warns that the real state of the economy has been skewed by Biden's huge unemployment payments

America has already slipped into a recession that could be as bad as the 2008 financial meltdown according to key consumer data, a Dartmouth College professor has warned. David Blanchflower, of Dartmouth, and Alex Bryson, of University College London, say that every slump since the 1980s has been foreshadowed by 10-point drops in consumer indices from the Conference Board and University of Michigan. The indices are drawn from questions put to ordinary Americans about their income expectations, employment conditions and what they expect for the US economy in the near future.

A day after the Ivy League announced the cancellation of its fall sports, another one of the league’s eight members is eliminating its men’s and women’s golf programs. Dartmouth revealed Thursday that it will cut five sports in all while also permanently closing the school’s golf course, Hanover Country Club. The move, which follows a similar decision by Brown in May, is expected to save the university, which is facing a projected $150 million institutional budget deficit, about $2 million, according to a statement released by Dartmouth president Philip Hanlon.

HANOVER — Dartmouth College officials declined Wednesday to rule out layoffs and furloughs for some of its 3,900 employees, including non-tenured faculty, as the institution faces millions of dollars in projected losses over its spring and summer terms. Layoffs are a “part of a tool kit” that administrators need access to, but are seen as a last resort to stabilize the college’s financial situation past June 30, Executive Vice President Rick Mills said during a meeting with Valley News editors and reporters. “They are a tool that we deploy later and with more reluctance than most of these other tools...

A professor of anthropology from Dartmouth College claims the mere presence of a gun, especially if one makes physical contact with it, can transform a good person into a bad one. Chelsey Kivland, who studies “street politics, insecurity, and social performance in contemporary urban Haiti,” makes use of an anecdote from that country in the Pacific Standard to establish a larger point about firearms: Three individuals who had owned a certain Smith & Wesson .38 Special all ended up being shot and killed … and not by that particular gun. Community members attributed the deaths to “maji” — magic —...

When former Dartmouth Professor of Government Ned LeBow cracked a joke on a San Francisco elevator, nobody could have foreseen the international firestorm it would spark. The resulting story of p.c. overreaction and academic idiocy left everyone except the 76-year-old professor looking ridiculous. But not, apparently, quite ridiculous enough. The p.c. pinheads have censured the professor…again. The story began at an academic conference in San Francisco when Professor Lebow, currently of King’s College London found himself on the same elevator as Simona Sharoni, a professor of women’s and gender studies at Merrimack College in Massachusetts. When Professor Sharoni courteously asked...

Before I had even arrived, I was attacked as a racist, a sexist and a bigot, and one professor sent out a tweet urging students to disrupt my talk. Dartmouth College lecturer Mark Bray made the argument to abolish capitalism in a recent op-ed for Truthout, linking capitalism to the prioritizing of profit over the environment and everything else. The professor has previously donated half of the profits from his book chronicling Antifa to the organization, written an introduction to an Antifa comic book, and tweeted glowingly about Antifa flags made by kids at a summer camp. The Dartmouth College library recently published a new guide for students explaining how scholars are using feminism to contravene “masculinist” practices in geography research. Feminist Geography refers to the “application of feminist theory and methodologies to understanding human geography,” the Dartmouth College guide explains, adding that its goal is to “investigate, reveal, challenge, and change gendered divisions in society.”

HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth College students say three psychology professors facing sexual misconduct allegations created a "hostile academic environment" marked by excessive drinking, favoritism and at times inappropriate behavior. The attorney general's office began a criminal investigation last month after learning about allegations against psychology professors Todd Heatherton, Paul Whalen and Bill Kelley, all of whom have been put on paid leave and have had their access to campus restricted. Authorities haven't released any details, but 15 undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students recently wrote to the school newspaper, The Dartmouth, alleging the three created a hostile environment "in which sexual...

An elite private university is offering an event early next year that purports to explore the question of “what’s up with white people?” Dartmouth University will host Temple University professor Matt Wray on February 2, 2018, where Wray will expound on “the different types of white people and how you can learn to spot them in their natural habitats.” The event, which bills itself as a “field guide” for those who are “perplexed” by white people, promises to offer a “sociological and cultural analysis of what produces and sustains…different white social types.” Those types include Rachel Dolezal, President Donald Trump,...

HANOVER — Two of the Dartmouth College professors under investigation for sexual misconduct used female Dartmouth students in psychological experiments, one which exposed them to images of erotica and food, and measured their weight gain and sexual activity six months later. The subsequent findings are just two of many studies the psychology professors submitted to academic journals during their careers at Dartmouth, though attorneys for one of the professors say the investigation has nothing to do with their research or teaching. On Tuesday, Attorney General Gordon MacDonald announced his office was looking into whether sexual misconduct allegations against three professors...
