Posted on 05/26/2008 7:03:26 AM PDT by snippy_about_it

Lord,

Keep our Troops forever in Your care

Give them victory over the enemy...

Grant them a safe and swift return...

Bless those who mourn the lost.

Amen.
.

FReepers from the Foxhole join in prayer
for all those serving their country at this time.

U.S. Military History, Current Events and Veterans Issues

Where Duty, Honor and Country
are acknowledged, affirmed and commemorated.

Our Mission:

The FReeper Foxhole is dedicated to Veterans of our Nation's military forces and to others who are affected in their relationships with Veterans.

In the FReeper Foxhole, Veterans or their family members should feel free to address their specific circumstances or whatever issues concern them in an atmosphere of peace, understanding, brotherhood and support.

The FReeper Foxhole hopes to share with it's readers an open forum where we can learn about and discuss military history, military news and other topics of concern or interest to our readers be they Veteran's, Current Duty or anyone interested in what we have to offer.

If the Foxhole makes someone appreciate, even a little, what others have sacrificed for us, then it has accomplished one of it's missions.

We hope the Foxhole in some small way helps us to remember and honor those who came before us.

Memorial Day 2008

"Changing the date merely to create three-day weekends has undermined the very meaning of the day. No doubt, this has contributed greatly to the general public's nonchalant observance of Memorial Day." -- VFW 2002 Memorial Day address

Memorial Day used to be a solemn day of mourning, a sacred day of remembrance to honor those who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. Businesses closed for the day. Towns held parades honoring the fallen, the parade routes often times ending at a local cemetery, where Memorial Day speeches were given and prayers offered up. People took the time that day to clean and decorate with flowers and flags the graves of those the fell in service to their country.

Unfortunately, when Congress made Memorial day into a mandatory three-day weekend in with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 - 363), it made it all the easier for us to be distracted from the spirit and meaning of the day.

Greetings to all the denizens of the Freeper Foxhole. Mrs alfa6 and I have just retirned from a wee bit of a trip.

I had a niece tie the knot Saturday evening in St. Louis. Sunday we went up to Peoria to visit with Mrs alfa6's brother and family and came back home to Kansas City this evening.

All in all a nice weekend

Freepers,

I wanted to let my freeper friends, particularly the ones who have kept up with my posts on Delbert Fellers, WWII hero, Silver Star recipient and fishing buddy, know that I received the dreaded phone call about 10 minutes ago.

Delbert died at 9 p.m. last night. It is fitting he died on Memorial Day.

He will buried Thursday with full military honors, and I’ll be there.

His son said he had planned to bring Delbert here to fish with me on his 86th birthday, in mid June, if he was able to make the trip. It was the one wish he had for his birthday, and his son said he looked forward to it so much, was so excited.

The threads on Delbert are pasted below:

Thank you Delbert for helping create the world we live in today.

Because of you and your brothers, it is a far better world than humanity has ever had.

Godspeed Delbert, you have earned your rest like few can.

Thanks all of you for the comments.

The funeral is tomorrow evening, and the interment is Thursday with full military honors.

I know I will not have a dry eye when I watch that much deserved military salute.

Delbert would be so proud.

I had a friend from Greeneville (Delbert’s hometown, two hours from here) call me today and tell me they heard his obituary read on the local radio station, and I was listed as a very special relative/friend.

Grammy, when we fish in Nashville next week we’ll catch a few bass for Delbert. He was a bass fishing fanatic, and may give us a little help from above.

Speaking of trailers here is what I've been upto, part of the last two days.

Oldest daughter wanted a trailer for her bike. She has a wagon I made for her some years back out of wrecked one a friend gave me. So yesterday we bring the wagon and the bike over to our house, because thats where all the cool tools are, according to the kid:-)

So anyways after staring at the bike and trailer in the workshop and looking at some bike trailers on a website called "Instructables" I had an idea. I had a piece of 1/2" copper pipe laying handy so I used it for proof of concept. After that and rummaging around for some odd parts here and there we had a plan. One trip to the hardware store and voila we had a solution.

Close up of the conduit and U-bolt trailer hitch.

The daughter tried to ride it home last night but we did not think to use a double nut and lock washer on the trailer/ hitch connection and after about a mile the trailer came off. This morning we went back to the hardware store and picked up a couple of castle nuts and hitch pin clips so that the nuts can't back off. She made it home in about an hour instead of the usuall 30 minutes. She said that she stopped about every mile or so to check all the connections but had no problems.

The only thing wrong with the whole set up is the wheels. We will have to look for some better wheels as the wheel on the trailer are only made to run around in the yard, not pulled along for miles behind a bike:-) Maybe we can find some better wheels at Harbor Fright.

Tell Spiderboy to get busy I'm gaining on him, he he he

Good evenin' ladies and gents. We don't have a lot of build progress to show off for Project Teardrop.

I did get the profile for the sides drawn today. I also got it plotted full size. A 500ft spool of paper works wonders...

Photobucket

In addition to Teardrop stuff, I repaired the flagpole halyard here at Castle Sp'aarrgghh'ksalot.

Work?!? Maynard G. Krebs was right.

I'm up to my ears in it myself. That's a good thing but it sure interferes with my fun. I barely have time to run roughshod over the hobbit lass, let alone freep. Roughshod? Who am I kidding?

Mornin' folks. Project Teardrop resumed visible progress this weekend with a supply run for $400 of plywood (ouch). The sides are each cut from a single sheet of 4X10X3/4 red oak ply.
