Veterans Walk for Freedom

VetsCoR proudly presents:

Veterans Walk for Freedom:

Remembering Our Oath

July 4 - 12, 2003
Philadelphia, PA
to Washington DC
With a closing ceremony July 12 presented by
VetsCoR and the DC Chapter of Free Republic

Calling all Veterans and east coast Freepers:

VetsCoR is planning a Veterans Walk for Freedom, to take place July 4-12, 2003, from Constitution Hall in Philadelphia, PA to Constitution Plaza in Washington, D.C. via Annapolis, MD (Naval Academy). The purpose is to educate Americans about the history and scope of our Constitutional Republic and generate support for the Armed Services who defend her. A parchment copy of the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights will be handed off from one walker to another. Each leg of the Walk will be approximately 18 miles. Pocket Constitutions will be handed out along the way.

We URGENTLY NEED volunteers to help us in this endeavor. If you live on the east coast, or if you can travel to the east coast and help us, please let us know ASAP. All walkers must be Veterans, but other volunteers need not be. Although volunteers are responsible for their own travel, lodging, food, we hope the east coast Freepers will open their homes to the Walkers, to give them a place to sleep overnight during the walk, if need be.

We also need local Freepers in each area along the route to act as liaison with the local authorities for things like parade permits, coordinating LEO escorts as required, etc. There will be a chase vehicle for emergencies and other support. If you don't live in the area of the Veterans Walk, but you would like to help us make it a reality, please click on the link below and make a donation to VetsCoR. Even with all volunteers, it will cost us a lot to bring it off.

Click here to make a donation.

Tentative itinerary is as follows: Route is via US 1 from Philadelphia to Baltimore, MD, then SR 2 to Annapolis, and US 50 into Washington, DC. Walkers will use the frontage road along those routes, if available. If anyone on the east coast has a better route keeping in mind access, lodging, food, etc., please let us know.

Day 1 - July 4, 2003 - 0800 - Ceremony at Constitution Hall in Philadelphia, PA where Vets, dressed in Revolutionary War uniforms, accept a parchment copy of the United States Constitution from someone dressed as a Founding Father, and start walking to Washington DC. First leg of walk ends at Concordville, PA. RON at Concordville.

Day 2 - July 5, 2003 - 0800 - Ceremony in Concordville, MD where Revolutionary War Vet hands off Constitution to War of 1812 "Vets". These vets walk second leg of walk, ending at West Grove, PA. RON at West Grove.

Day 3 - July 6, 2003 - 0800 - Ceremony at West Grove, PA where War of 1812 "Vets" hand off Constitution to Civil War "Vets". These vets walk third leg, ending at Conowingo, MD. RON at Conowingo.

Day 4 - July 7, 2003 - 0800 - Ceremony at Conowingo, MD where Civil War "Vets" hand off Constitution to Spanish/American War "Vets". These vets walk fourth leg, ending at Fallstown, MD. RON at Fallstown.

Day 7 - July 10, 2003 - 0800 - Ceremony outside Naval Academy Main Gate, where WWII Vets hand off Constitution to Korean War Vets. These vets walk seventh leg to Bowie, MD RON in Bowie.

Neil, if I remember correctly, Jim allows VetsCoR notices in Breaking News or Extended News for maximum exposure.

THIS JUST IN...

• Tomorrow in the USO Lounge of Baltimore Washington International Airport, "Gods and Generals" director Ron Maxwell will join his star, Robert Duvall, in screening a half-hour excerpt of the 3 1/2-hour Civil War epic to soldiers bound for the Middle East. "I don't think any film about war is anything but anti-war," Maxwell told us, "and I wouldn't take part in an event that was 'gung-ho, let's go get 'em.'" But his movie, which opens later this month, "also has moments of incredible heroism and bravery," Maxwell said.
