Rep. Gary Condit's son speculated yesterday that Chandra Levy's disappearance could be part of a shadowy plot to "set up" his father.
Appearing on CBS's "Early Show," Chad Condit linked the theory to his dad's seat on the House Intelligence Committee.
"Just a few weeks ago, a friend of mine says, 'You know, Chad, your dad was set up. This is a setup. There's too many pieces of this that points to a kind of a setup,'" Condit said when asked whether he had any idea what happened to Levy.
"And early on, drumbeats about him being removed from the Intelligence Committee were a little suspicious to me," he said. "So I don't know exactly what happened to her, but I think that might be one of the theories we need to look at."
The California congressman faces a frosty reception when the House reconvenes today.
Colleagues who aren't openly criticizing him are distancing themselves in the wake of his evasive answers about his relationship with the 24-year-old federal intern, who vanished May 1.
House Democratic leader Dick Gephardt has hinted he may bounce Condit from the Intelligence Committee as a sanction or because he is perceived as vulnerable to blackmail.
Chad Condit, who has become the family spokesman since his dad's recent TV interviews bombed, said it would be ridiculous to take the committee seat away. "He is a good American and an American we could trust with whatever secrets or national security issues we might face," he said.
"He said calling his father a murder suspect is "unacceptable" and blamed the suspicions on the media.
"First they tried to convict Gary of sex. Now they're trying to convict him of murder," he said. "So within the public opinion polls, you pretty much destroyed this man."
So Condit sends his son out to say that someone said to him that this was a setup... this just confirms my belief that Gary Condit is a COWARD. Come out and say it yourself, Gary. Tell us you're a victim of a "vast right-wing conspiracy," Gary. Tell us you're still not a suspect, Gary.

Trouble is....who on earth would have a motive?
News to me, I thought Gary himself admitted to hanky-panky. And, of course, if they can bring in Clinton's famous coroner Dr. Fahmy Malak, any body could be ruled "The wust case of suicide I ever done see."
If it was a setup, that's just more proof that a guy with his kind of private life should never have been on the intelligence committee in the first place.
Since it's a select committee, Dick Gephardt is personally responsible for his being there.
Hangin' Chad ain't the sharpest tack in the drawer, is he?
The Condit family reads the Clinton playbook. Apparently, they don't read very quickly, or understand it that well, but they read it.
