Can FreeRepublics Censorship Policy be Articulated?

Posted on 09/18/2001 12:11:38 AM PDT by Prism

Or are we flying blind?

I just posted some excerpts from "The Oklahoma City Bombing and The Politics of Terror" and the thread was immediately zapped.

So what is the policy of this site? It would appear that any criticism of the CIA, NSA, FBI and US foreign policy and covert activities are no longer permitted.

Meanwhile it seems there is a large tolerance for racism and kill-em-all postings here.

Whats the deal?

Only governments can truly censor.

If it was a pro-Tim McVeigh piece, they might be trying to save bandwidth.

On a serious note, Jim Robinson posted an article stating his opinions about what will and won't be censored. You could search for that to get an answer to your question.

Well look at what you posted and don't do it again. That seems crystal clear to me.

The policy is - any post or article that the owner of the site does not want on his site, depending on whether it is raining, the owner has heartburn, etc...

It's called Private Property.

Specifics:

1) If the policy is not definable, will a poster be expelled for probing the contours of what is acceptable?

2) How much criticism of our government is generally allowable on this topic (terrorism, foreign policy, etc), on a scale of 1-10?

3) Can FR provide a generalized list of points that are 'sensative'?

Can FreeRepublics Censorship Policy be Articulated?

Probably. Will it? I doubt it.

The "official" guidelines are "articulated" here.

FR Policy: Jim runs the place and does what he feels like...either you like it, or you don't...either you hang, or bail.

Here's a couple of the "articulated" rules:

Do keep "vanity" posts to a minimum.

Don't be a whiner.

I can't believe you went dirctly to the policy......I would have put money on the notion that you'd stick with the semantics for at least 3 more replys.

Just when you think you know somebody

I don't know, just how much "criticism of our government" do you have to offer and how does it relate to situation at hand? Do you think your "criticism" will turn back the clock in time to negate last Tuesday or do you just want to crow "I told you so"?Can your "criticism" be put on hold until we at least bury the dead or is something you have to say so IMPORTANT that you just have to "share" it?

Why would the minor fact that we're at war change anything?

I've already earned my wings trying to knock some sense into the skulls of folks who cry "censorship!" and "How can it be called 'Free Republic' if I'm not free to post what I want?"

The best way to combat these folks is to ask them for their address so you can come over and spend 12 hours calling them effin' a-holes on their property.

They shut up when they realize that turning down my request makes them total hypocrites.

No kidding. But don't you think it would be appropriate given the situation to at least attempt to form a policy on this situation or are we all supposed to be mind readers and watch our P's and Q's lest we get banned.

I dont think my request is unreasonable, difficult maybe, but the 'Jim is God' answer is not one I consider civil.

I want to obey the rules, but the rules, as some state, are simply the whims of the owner at whatever moment. I find that very unfair conduct between reasoning people.

Just observe the tenor...and what is acceptable will become apparent in short order...be patient...
