This "cartoon" was printed in my local paper, as Eliza is a "local girl". She's gone all through school with my sons, and I was really surprised to see this. I'm glad it's posted here, the paper only had it in black and white, and color helps even more. The Bellingham Herald interviewed Eliza as part of another story on the terrorists, and I will copy that here FYI... Soon after the blasts destroyed the World Trade Center towers, 17 year-old Eliza Gauger of Bellingham sat down in front of her computer and, sobbing, drew "Mommie Liberty," a political cartoon depicting a young, maternal Statue of Libery, cradling a baby wrapped in the American flag with one hand and holding a revolver in the other. "Mommie Liberty" is glaring. "The most dangerous place in the world is between a mother and her children," reads the caption. Gauger, raised on her parents' belief that the Vietnam War was "the stupidest thing that has ever happened to America," said the United States should find out who killed more than 5,000 people last week and "make sure the never do this again..." ...Raised by Vietnam era parents deeply skeptical of their government, and watching conspiracy-driven shows like "The X-files" Gauger said she "kind of grew up accepting the government was going to hide some stuff from us." But President Bush has an opportunity now, she said. "If the people in power are doing a good job, if they can restore faith in America and our political system by being worthy of our trust again, more power to them," she said.

I can top that:
Man is the one animal that can't be tamed. He goes along for years, peaceful as a cow, when it suits him. Then when it suits him not to be, he makes a leopard look like a tabby cat. Which goes double for the female of the species. -Robert A. Heinlein, Tunnel in the Sky

Letter to the editor in this past Sunday's Omaha World Herald -indignant about this cartoon- The Lady is graceful and dignified and would absolutely never hold a gun was the gist of the letter. My thoughts are okay letter to the editor writer--stick your head in the sand and see where you wind up at-

You mean this?:
Cartoon was improper
I do not feel that Eliza Gauger's cartoon rendition of Lady Liberty on Monday's more commentary page was proper or a true depiction of our American idealism. To show her brandishing a weapon of destruction is not what she stands for and not how she should be portrayed. We know she is our protector of what is true and just, but it saddens the heart that someone would have found that image to be an accurate portrayal.
We as Americans are all looking to unite in destroying the evil that subjected us to the Sept. 11 devastation and undoubtedly more strife in time to come. However, rallying around a caricature of our most precious and revered expression of democracy with a gun drawn has no place in bolstering the American spirit.
The caption beside the art, however, was most accurate: "The most dangerous place in the world is between a mother and her children."
May only God show mercy to the terrorists for what they have caused. Let those who found no conscience be destroyed, but do not demean a symbol of our heritage.

That was- according to the post about the girl that drew it, heartfelt feelings. I can take her drawing for what she meant and appreciate the fact at least some young people have high values and express those values. Even and although there will always be someone somewhere that will put it down. Having something to say and then saying it is a valuable asset in this world of ours. There probably are many more like her but what I usually see is not of that quality.

I think she may be a future SASsy sister or Liberty belle!
