Freepers, I've posted a large image file of a map of Afghanistan on the net for your general use. The image was stitched together from segments (see page). Click on the link to view and/or save it. The link will remain active for a few days.

Must be quite an old map, as it still shows the "Soviet Union" to the North.

How strange. The Wakhan Corridor - a sliver of land that reaches out to a small border with China. There’s gotta be a story behind that.

Thank you for the excellent map. Allow an Afghan minute to download. Then save to disk.

Oh but the heathen Chinee would not resupply their asymmetrical puppet via That Corridor.

And Brave Like Lion Osama bin Hidin wouldn't escape via That Corridor.

A caller to the local talk radio show recommended several ERW's. Still, the black glass parking lot has much to recommend it.

Unless we drop Jane Fonda in to search for "root causes", pose with Osama and while stroking his stinger paint them with a laser target designator.

Say good night, Jane.

Say good night, Osama.

Good work, the only thing missing is elevations and lat/long references!

I think we will all become very familiar with these locations in the near future!!

Thanks for the map. We will, as another poster pointed out, get to know this area very well!

"The Wakhan Corridor - a sliver of land that reaches out to a small border with China. There’s gotta be a story behind that."

There is.

When a 19th Century international boundary commission met to formalize the national borders in Central Asia (which, as you might imagine, were rather informal), the British insisted on the configuration of the Wakhan Corridor.

Their purpose was to insure that Russia and India, the Pearl of Empire, did not have a common border. Recall that Pakistan was, until 1948, an integral part of India.

Thanks dude. Gonna cut that sucker right back up and print it out and make a situation map out of it (gonna stitch it back together with scotch tape). It's going up on the wall right beside my computer.
