CNSNews.com) - Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) Friday introduced what he calls a "compromise proposal" to help end the legislative stalemate over whether to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil drilling.~~
Daschle suggested that instead of drilling in the ANWR, a new natural gas pipeline be built running south from Alaska's North Slope. According to Daschle, the pipeline could be completed within six years, providing 400,000 new jobs.
It could be "one of the fastest ways that we could produce energy from Alaska," Daschle said, and would pose no danger to the environment.
Republicans, however, dismissed Daschle's plan.
Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska), ranking Republican on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee said, "An Alaskan natural gas pipeline isn't going to do anything to help reduce our dangerous dependence on foreign oil."
Murkowski added, "Senator Daschle needs to understand the difference between oil and gas."
Daschle earlier this week suspended action on the Senate's energy bill because, according to Republicans, it included ANWR drilling and was headed for committee passage.
Daschle later announced he would bypass the committee and bring the energy bill before the full Senate, but not before completing work on appropriations bills and legislation dealing with terrorism.
I'd say with Bush's popularity the repubs finally have the upper hand. They and Bush should stick to this, if they do they'll win it and Duschnozzle will only look like the foolish obstructionist he is, at a time when being one will be most frowned upon.
That may be asking too much, given that Dashole doesn't understand the difference between his a$$ and a whole in the ground.
Bush does not need to be or even appear to be partisan. He can just say at any TV opportunity that the US NEEDS Alaskan oil, that "congress" is having some trouble seeing the light, and that he hopes the American people will support him on this urgent matter.
GW could jazz up his remarks with a clintoonistic poll showing that some huge percentage of Americans support his position. Nah, I take that back; it would be beneath the dignity of the presidency to behave like some sort of lying backwoods jerkwater slob.
Murkowski added, "Senator Daschle needs to understand the difference between oil and gas." That may be asking too much, given that Dashole doesn't understand the difference between his a$$ and a whole in the ground.

(huge balloon tires distrubte a vehicle's weight so that a large vehicle has less impact on the Tundra than the human footprint!);
in STARK contrast to ENVIRONMENTAL CRIMES of unimaginable depravity
(For example, an engineer torned to me while we were standing in a Western Siberian oilfield and said:
