Fighting World War II with Today's Mentality

BOMBING RESUMES OVER GERMANY

Allied bombers returned to the sky today after a month-long suspension of operations out of respect for the German holiday of Oktoberfest. Waves of B-17s, B-24s, B-25s once again pounded German anti-aircraft sites and Luftwaffe training basis in what Pentagon sources called a "precision attack" designed to weaken the war-fighting capabilities of the Hitlerite regime.

"Slowly but surely, we are going to smoke Adolph out of his bunker," asserted President Truman during last night's fireside chat. Military analysts say that the continued aerial bombardment is taking its toll on the Nazi war machine.

The Pentagon refused to confirm or deny whether the controversial B-29 "Superfortress" was used in today's bombing. The B-29 has been the subject of Congressional inquiry into cost over-runs as well as its safety record.

Responding to German accusations that women and children continue to be killed in the 5-year long air campaign, a military spokesman said, "While we are taking every conceivable precaution, it is an unfortunate fact of war that sometimes a small amount of collateral damage is unavoidable. America sincerely regrets any inconvenience to the German people this campaign to rid the world of totalitarianism may cause."

INVASION OF GERMANY NOT IN THE WORKS, SAY MILITARY EXPERTS

Despite the success of the air war over Germany, the United States is a long way from sending ground troops into Europe. Military experts agree that doing so would only play into Hitler's strength.

"The Hitlerites are well armed, they have a formidable panzer force, and they know the terrain. US forces would only risk being bogged down in death-traps like the Ardennes and the Ruhr Valley," said one ex-military officer interviewed.

US troops setting foot on German soil would also risk breaking up the fragile alliance that Roosevelt and his successor Truman have worked so hard to keep together. "Most of the Allied countries, including Great Britain, have large populations of people with Germanic ancestry. Nobody knows how they might react to a direct invasion of the Aryan homeland by a mongrel race of mud people."

Instead of sending ground troops, most experts agree, the US should concentrate on knocking out the Hitlerite command and control elements, and continuing to support German opposition parties both inside and outside the Reich. "There's a growing resistance movement in Bavaria, and direct involvement by Switzerland cannot be ruled out."

IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO HAND OVER HITLER, TRUMAN TELLS NAZI PARTY

In last night's fireside radio chat, President Truman repeated his offer for a cease fire if the Nazi Party hands over Adolph Hitler and his henchmen for trial. "We have no quarrel with Germany or with Nazism," said the president. "There are many fine Americans with German backgrounds and who hold Nazi beliefs. Our quarrel has never been with them, but rather with Hitler and his global network of militarism and intolerance."

KLAN HOLDS RALLY, ASKS FOR UNDERSTANDING

Members of the Invisible Empire of the Klu Klux Klan held a "God Bless America" rally today in Milwaukee. They hope that by educating Americans about who the Klan is and what it stands for, they can prevent Klan members from being targeted as victims of hate crimes.

"In no way are we Nazis," asserted Grand Imperial Wizard Henry "Bubba" Winthrop. "Just because we share a belief in white supremacy and a fondness for torch-lit night-time spectacles does not mean the Klan supports in any way the Nazis' agenda for state control of industry and labor, the glorification of militarism and pseudo-Nordic mythology."

Last month, an Alabama Klansman was severely beaten by a mob that mistook his cross burning for a book burning. FBI statistics show that hate crimes against Nazis, fascists, Leninists and other forms of totalitarian socialists are up sharply. There are an estimated 3 million totalitarians currently living in the United States.

ARMY AIR CORPS OFFICERS CLEARED OF WRONGDOING IN DRESDEN INCIDENT

A military panel has cleared all Army Air Corps personnel involved in the 1945 firebombing of the German city of Dresden - which incinerated over 45,000 civilians and set off an even bigger firestorm of anti-American protests around the world - of any misconduct.

The catastrophe was due to an "unfortunate chain of events" according to the report, released yesterday. Targeting errors and an inappropriate selection of ordinance led to the disaster, which turned the once-beautiful medieval city into a pile of ashes.

"Improved intelligence gathering methods and newer, more precise munitions have lessened the possibility of any future Dresdens." concluded the report. Fascist students protested in front of US Embassies in Rome, Madrid and Buenos Aires, calling the investigation a "whitewash" and an insult to totalitarians everywhere.

USE OF ATOMIC BOMB RULED OUT

Military planners have voted 9 to 3 against deploying the newly revealed atomic bomb that was first tested in July of 1945. A bipartisan committee of congressional and military leaders have jointly reported the bomb is too inhuman and too harmful in the environment to ever be used in battle.

British Prime Minister Winston Churchill is said to be furious over the decision to not utilize the nuclear bomb. "It is beyond belief that the American government would expend large amounts of time and resources to develop a weapon that could save lives and shorten the war, and yet in the most critical hour it fails to use the bomb in defense of liberty."

I'm a first time poster (and some time lurker) - a search didn't show that this had been posted before. If I've broken any rules, my apologies in advance.

I am not a "first-time poster".Is this article a long lost Rod Serling "Twilight Zone"teleplay??I am an ardent student of the events of WW11,and there wasn't a five-year bombing campaign prior to the June6,1944 Allied Invasion that took place in Normandy. Is this someone's idea of a joke???

Some good points. It remains to be seen whether this "war" can truly be "won" without inflicting horrific consequences on the enemy. Demoralizing those elements of the "Muslim" world who want to destroy us may be the only way to remove the threat of our own demoralization and defeat.

Obviously, we're not ready to think in those terms . . . yet.

Is this someone's idea of a joke???

It is known as sarcasm. It shows what might have happened if today's methods were applied to WWII.

"Sums up my thoughts exactly. We are fighting a fake war - and we will lose unless we make it into a real war."

You realize, of course, that it was almost a year after Pearl Harbor before we mounted our first offensives in WW II -- Guadalcanal (8/7/42) and North Africa (Operation Torch: 11/7/42).

On the other hand, within a month of the WTC attack, we have launched an attack on bin Laden's host country.

Haste makes waste. Impatience breeds errors.

You forgot to post the part about the CNN crews in the German bunkers waiting to film our troops landing at Omaha Beach.

There is one difference between then and now that is often overlooked.

On the surface it may not seem significant but I am seriously beginning to consider its consequences.

How many wars have we won since we changed the War Department into the Department of Defense?

Point well taken, however things have changed a little bit in 60 yrs. I too have expressed your premise but the longer I look at it the less I am in agreement with it. Things are just too different. Attitudes are different. Things happen at light speed now.

you've heard of the christmas truces in the trenches of WWI? eventually undone by officers? and then HQ took steps (such as rotating units) to prevent them from ever happening again. The book "the evolution of co-operation" by robert axelrod, has some citations on it.

I would suggest that fighting today's war with a WWII mentality might produce just as ludicrous results as your PC scenario. Maybe I'm pointing out the obvious, but it's the 21st century, not 1945.
