J'ACCUSE

J'ACCUSE

Henry Mark Holzer

In the late 1880s, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a French Jew, was railroaded to Devils Island by military and other anti-semites as the scapegoat in a notorious espionage case. One of his champions was Emile Zola, the French writer. Zola's pamphlet, J'accuse, attacking the government, loudly proclaimed what many had only whispered, and helped turn the tide in Dreyfus' favor. Zola, however, was imprisoned. Happily, unlike Nineteenth Century France, in America my accusations against some of those who have contributed to today's terrorist threat are protected by the First Amendment.

I accuse former Senator Frank Church of having been the first to demonize the United States intelligence community. I further accuse the House democrat party leadership of having made the likes of Ron Dellums chairman of the Armed Services Committee - he who swore to dismantle every one of our intelligence services.

I accuse President Jimmy Carter and his CIA Director Stansfield Turner of having begun the gutting of that agency.

I accuse Ted Kennedy and his liberal Congressional cronies of having opened our borders not only to many aliens who aspired to become good Americans, but also to those who would corrupt and attack this great land.

I accuse those New York cops who botched the investigation of Rabbi Meir Kahane's murder by two terrorists, who possessed bomb-building plans and photos of targets - including the world trade center - several years before the first attack.

I accuse Ronald Reagan and his inept national security team of having gotten into bed with terrorists-in-waiting, then walking away from the vacuum that became Afghanistan. I further accuse them of ignoring the slaughter of American marines in the Lebanon barracks, and turning tail in exiting that country.

I accuse George Bush (No. 41), Colin Powell, and Brent Scowcroft of having snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in the Iraqi desert.

I accuse William Jefferson Clinton, and his weak-sister character, of encouraging terrorism by ignoring terrorist atrocities - e.g., World Trade Center (I), Khobar Towers, Kenya and Tanzania embassies, USS Cole - and by successfully forcing Israel to capitulate to her enemies. I further accuse the Clintonistas of folly in Somalia, getting 18 American soldiers killed there, and turning tail in an ignominiously hasty exit.

I accuse the Saudi oligarchy of being double-dealing and cowardly, and no friend to the United States, let alone an ally upon whom we can count in the crunch.

I accuse the Egyptian leadership of having signed the peace accords with Israel, while having their fingers crossed behind their backs.

I accuse Iraq, Libya, Sudan, Iran, Syria, Yemen and North Korea of being terrorist states, no matter that some are seen as now being needed for our so-called coalition.

I accuse the peaceniks, at best, as being out of touch with reality, and, at worse, of being the same kind of America-haters that we suffered during the Vietnam War.

I accuse the environmentalists of exalting sometimes-legitimate concern for our natural world over our real-world problem of dependence upon foreign energy sources.

I accuse liberals generally, and Congressional liberals in particular, of a pathological antipathy to even legitimate military preparedness and appropriately self-defensive intelligence activities.

I accuse those Muslim leaders in America who have maintained an unconscionable silence in the face of their co-religionists' mass murder of our countrymen and desecration of our national symbols.

I accuse bleeding hearts worldwide of trying to turn a military campaign into a walk-in-the-park, by their insistence that in a war there be no collateral damage - conveniently forgetting Pearl Harbor, Bataan, the Chosin Reservoir, and Hue - let alone what the allies were forced to do at Hiroshima and Dresden.

I accuse the Left media of undermining our military efforts by constantly reinforcing the "no collateral damage" theme, and wringing their hands when American aircraft or missiles inadvertently hit civilians.

I accuse the turf-protecting intelligence agencies, that have refused to share information with their colleagues, even though all are supposed to be on the same side.

I close with perhaps the worst accusation of all, because it explains why all the others are possible. I accuse philosophers through the ages of neither understanding nor teaching a morality of rational self-interest, whose political corollary is freedom and capitalism. Until that system of thought becomes the norm, until it is absorbed at least by America's intellectual leaders, we can expect to continue down the road we now travel, where it is possible, and justified, to say "J'accuse."

I second the accusations and add a special poke in the eye with a sharp stick for Senator Joe "Operation Flippant Combover" Biden (aka "Osama Joe Biden", "Joe-sama bin Laden", "Saddam's Butt Boy", et al) for his obscene, craven attack on Scott Ritter, true American hero who could have saved us from this a-----x mess.

Pretty damn good article. Some of it has 20/20 hindsight feel, but many chickens came home to roost 9-11, good to call all those to account. bump!

Let us also recognize the "contribution" of such as Deutch and Torricelli in precluding the hiring of bad guys to spy on bad guys for us.

And another round of Bronx cheers for the traitor-rapist X42 for having sent the Cole to Aden, Yemen without prudent security in place--and hang the Navy brass along with him, for having no watchstanders to blow out of the water any unauthorized boat approaching within explosive range.

Oh and Hitlery, for being the pom-pom girl for Palestinian State (TEAM! RAH!), smooching Suha, taking donations from fronts for Hamas only to have to return them when exposed.

And for scum such as Peter Jennings and Marty Meehan and Joe Biden and Tom Daschle for backstabbing our president in this hour of crisis.

And for fifth column maggots like McKinney and Lee.

Hanoi Jane is soft on terrorism--pair her with Hitlery for the greatest boo-magnet ticket imagineable for 2004. Hell to Pay for the queens of plastic surgery and plastic sincerity.

Many good points, but, as someone else pointed out, a lot of it is 20/20 hindsight. His conclusion, however, is dead on, abso-freaking-lutely correct.

I suggest a Cold War frame around your accusations. It will better help to understand the actions of both Cold Warriors and opponents (i.e. appeasers).

One simply cannot understand the world, even today, without understanding that the Cold War was fundamental to U.S. policy and politics at every level and global to every international relation... the world we face today is yet framed by the alignments set in 1945.

The recent perspectives were:
Reagan prosecuted the Cold War.
Bush 41 tried to end it.
Clinton did everything to ignore it.
Bush 43 must now fix it.

nicollo: Bush 43 must now fix it.
The question is, if it was in that bad of a shape, why didn't Bush 43 start from day one of his administration to fix Clinton's mess instead of playing the same old game and then taking a month vacation?

Fair question.

He was. Bush campaigned on realpolitic, in direct opposition to Gore's i.e. Clinton's feel-good foreign policy, which was nothing more than the path of least resistance. The changes needed are drastic, a total realignment of world coalitions, and that was not something that 43 could have fixed "from day one."

I wish to remind folks that the Cold War was the crucial battle of the 20th Century, and our entire foreign policy was shaped towards its prosecution (thank God for Reagan).

Come 1993, think USA of 1946. Nobody wanted to know about Moscow, Korea, and iron curtains. Nobody cared if Saddam expelled the inspectors. Nobody cared if China swiped the missile plans. Nobody cared if terrorists tried to topple the Twin Towers.

Clintoon ignored all this, and he had the American people behind him in it. Dubya or whoever was to become 43 (thank God it's him) had/has to face it.
