The Only Reason (I Bet) That P.J. O'Rourke is Not a FReeper
Personal Knowledge ^ | 10/30/01 | Self

Posted on 10/30/2001 9:08:17 AM PST by SerpentDove

I was at one of the Barnes and Noble bookstores last night, at P.J. O'Rourke's signing of his new book, "CEO of the Sofa."

One of the guys in front of me set two fifths of Dewar's Scotch on the table, saying, "If you sign this one, the other's yours." Hilarious! And P.J. said, "What a deal!," and gladly obliged.

As soon as the guy left, P.J. cracked open the Dewar's and poured it into his plastic Starbucks water glass. You should have seen the look on the Barnes and Noble ladie's face! I was cracking up. He asked her, "You don't have a liquor liscense, do you?"

She shook her head, hers eyes bugging out of her head.

"Well, you don't tell anybody and I won't, either."

She hurried up and got a store bag to put the open container in, while P.J. sipped at leisure, signing away.

When I got to the table, I asked him if her ever visited Freerepublic.com. He said, "I can't use a computer. I've had people try to show me, and I can't make it work."

And that, my friends, is the ONLY reason (I bet) that P.J. O'Rourke, my favorite humorist, is not a FReeper.

Dallas, right?

I heard PJ on KLIF yesterday on the Scott Anderson show. One of the funniest and most entertaining people in America today.

He's one of my favorites. Thanks for the tidbit. Time to re-read "Give War a Chance". It's said about several places - The best thing about (Afghanistan) is that they frequently kill each other.

I don't know yet. But the guy's hilarious.

By his own admission, however, his mood was quite subdued due to the 9/11 situation. He's got young kids, and like most of us, that's high on our priority lists.

PJ is God. I had the luck of spending some time with him 15 or so years ago when he was doing a story on a tranquil island/drug smuggling paradise in the West Indies. He posseses a sense of humor and can only come from being Irish and a Midwestener (Toledo, of course!).

I do not believe for a minute that he is computer challenged. He's a writer. Give me a break. He probably would rather spend time with his kids than answering email from strangers. Agree - his stuff is great.

You'll enjoy this: P.J. O'Rourke matches wits with Christopher Hitchens and Kate O'Bierne.

I know a major magazine writer who, despite using a word processor for his work, is functionally computer illiterate. He truly can't use the machine for much more than pounding out his next article. Seems depressing, until you consider that he spends ALL his time thinking about his core topic, and really has no time to pick up something as radically different as computer/Internet stuff. Most of us don't realize how much time really goes into learning to be computer literate.

Every adult on my Christmas list is getting a conservative book this year. Let's make Barbara Olson and P.J O'Rourke numbers one and two on the best-seller lists. By the way, my favorite O'Rourke books are Holidays in Hell and his hillarious guide to being a bachelor (the title escapes me at the moment).
