MAG: 12 U.S. DELTA MEMBERS WOUNDED ON RAID OF OMAR'S COMPLEX, THREE SERIOUSLY; PENTAGON RETHINKS
Drudge ^ | November 3, 2001 | Seymour Hersh via Drudge

Seymour Hersh has filed yet another controversial report for coming editons of the NEW YORKER, publishing sources tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

In ESCAPE AND EVASION, Hersh claims: In the wake of a near-disaster during the assault on Mullah Omar's complex during the early morning of October 20th, the Pentagon has been rethinking future Special Forces operations inside Afghanistan.

MORE

Delta Force, which prides itself on stealth, had been counterattacked by the Taliban, and some of the Americans had had to fight their way to safety. Hersh has filed his report for the November 12, 2001 issue of the NEW YORKER, on sale Monday.

Twelve Delta members were wounded, three of them seriously.

The intensity and ferocity of the Taliban response "scared the crap out of everyone," a senior military officer tells Hersh.

The Delta team stormed Mullah Omar's complex, but found little of value, Hersh reports, and then, "as they came out of the house, the shit hit the fan," one senior officer says. "It was like an ambush. The Taliban were fighting with light arms and either [rocket-propelled grenades] or mortars." The team immediately began taking casualties and evacuated.

"The Delta team was forced to abandon one of its objectives: the insertion of an undercover team into the area and the stay-behind soldiers fled to a previously determined rendezvous point, using a contingency plan known as an E. & E., for escape and evasion," Hersh writes.

MORE

One Delta Force soldier told a colleague that military planners "think we can perform fucking magic. We can't. Don't put us in an environment we weren't prepared for. Next time, we're going to lose a company."

One military man reports that Delta Force officers were "still outraged" last week as after-action arguments over how best to wage a ground war continued.

The Pentagon could not give details of what really happened near Kandahar "because it doesn't want to appear that it doesn't know what it's doing." Another senior officer says, "I don't know where the adult supervision for these operations is. Franks -- the general in charge of the U.S. Central Command -- is clueless."

Speaking of Delta Force the officer adds, "These guys have had a case of the ass since Mogadishu. They want to do it right and they train hard. Don't put them on something stupid. We'll get there, but it's going to get ugly."

Officers also criticized the Army Rangers' sameday parachute jump into a Taliban-controlled airbase because "it was a television show. The Rangers were not the first in -- an Army Pathfinder team had already confirmed that the area was clear of Taliban forces."

One senior official Hersh spoke to acknowledged that there were serious problems in the war effort thus far, but said, "It's like reading a six-hundred-page murder mystery. It's solved on the last few pages, but you have to read five hundred and ninety-eight pages to get there."

Errrrrr, if one of them had been killed in action, would Delta Force be staging a job action or something now? My goodness, you mean the Taliban forces were actually shooting back? I'm SHOCKED.

They need to include a class in the Delta Force "hard training" curriculum on the topic "Don't whine to reporters about your gripes after a tough mission."

I think they're gonna have a serious case of the a** over these damn "military men" speaking to the press about this stuff.

How encouraging to our enemy to read these things in our press. How "encouraging" to our country to read about conflicts within the military.

How "encouraging" to those in Delta Force to have it shouted from the rooftops that anyone in the military command had the sh*t scared outta them.

War ain't for sissies. Something doesn't work, shut up about it, reorganize and make it work. Get a clue.

I'll only believe this story when it comes from identified sources. This casts the leadership as not in effective command which I don't believe is the case. This also could be disinformation (far more likely, IMHO.)

Of course, it should go without saying that probably they didn't merely take 12 casualties, the majority of those casualties were fatalities I believe. It was reported elsewhere that 9 were dead in one incident. That same day GW gave the big public statement where he spoke as if there were a bunch of people who'd given their lives. He said it was 2 dead in a helo crash, but if you'd heard the way he was talking you'd have thought it was worse.

Since, I have no military experience at all, I can't know what to say except:

This is war and sh*t happens. Don't let it happen too often.

Sounds like some general should learn a good lesson for being a little over-confident.

Oh' and fire each and every one of the Clinton's political panty waist appointees in the military.

That should solve about 95% of the problems.

Well I believe there was a firefight.

I believe there is a bunch of dead towel heads.

I believe that nobody in the D-boys would talk to any reporter especially a commie one unless ordered to as a set-up for some reason.

Somilia 1000 dead Gomers and 18 KIA Rangers, 125 wounded. Seems like fair odds to me....

Yeah, this has the ring of disinformation. Not that there aren't a bunch of useless generals running things. That will change however. Real shooting wars quickly separate the men from the boys. During peacetime, officers are promoted through office politics and ass-kissing. During wartime, officers are promoted through merit and battlefield experience. We will eventually have a battle-hardened, seasoned military again and it will happen sooner than you think.

Seymour Hersh:

The guy who broke the story on Mia Lai in Vietnam.

Got to put the article in the right perspective. Sort of like Rush Limbaugh commenting on the DNC.

In my most cynical times, this is what I think: we thought a few bombs in the heart of Kandahar, a Taliban internal revolt engineered by Pakistan's Intelligence Service and march by the Northern Alliance, and we win.

Why are we slowly tightening the noose? Is it our own incompetence?

Have you ever noticed that a beat cop doesn't get quoted in the average newspaper? Or if he does, it's not about anything controversial. There's a reason for this. The beat cop is NOT a public person and ethically can't be quoted. I want to know if the soldier quoted was a commander or a "beat soldier," it makes a difference.

This is so stupid if true. It's like expecting Hitlers troops not to fight back and then whining about it when they do.

It's not just Hirsh who has reported details about the failure of this raid. The story appeared in papers from India, Pakistan, and other Arab nations over a week ago. DEBKA, if you use them as a source, hinted at multiple American deaths. I've been wondering why none of this was reported by any American or London media. This is the first American story I've seen even giving any details.
