John is up in San Jose tonight doing some maintenance work on our equipment. He will be taking the system down in a few minutes. Hopefully, it will not take long, but he has cautioned that Free Republic may be up and down intermittently while the work is being performed.

You may want to visit and bookmark our contingency site on Yahoo where we post status updates when our server is down:

I don't know. Sounds like your browser is losing our login cookie. You might check your system clock to make sure the time and date are correct. A wrong date (and lately we've discovered that some browsers are sensitive to the time, even one hour) can confuse the browser's cookie saving routine.

By the way, received the message below from another person who was having cookie problems. Don't know anything about this software product, but looks like it (and possibly others like it) could cause problems with our login cookie:

Foound the problem in an adblocking program (ad-aware)...Don't know what it was doing.. just disabled, logged in, and saved cookie from fr..now it works,,,who'da thought it,,, :)

Because the fire goes out if you don't have enough logs on it. hehe

Are you connecting to www.freerepublic.com, or just freerepublic.com? If it's the latter, FR will completely ignore your cookies. The same thing was happening to me for a month before I realized what was going on.
