Commentary: US suffers disaster in Coral Sea
Despite War Department claims of a strategic victory May 7 and 8 (1942) in the Battle of The Coral Sea, CNN has learned that the battle was actually a critical setback for American naval forces, resulting in the loss of one aircraft carrier and damage so severe to another that it is expected to be out of action for months.
The War Department and White House claim that the battle, the first ever fought between opposing carrier fleets, stopped Japanese advances into the South Pacific and stymied Japanese attempts to separate Australia from its US supply lines. War Department sources tried to portray the battle as an even tradeoff.
But CNN has learned that the US Pacific fleet has been severely crippled while the Imperial Japanese Navy remains as strong as ever.
According to informed sources, the fleet carrier Lexington was lost in the action. Additionally, the fleet carrier Yorktown was heavily damaged. It is estimated that it will be out of action for months if it ever makes it back to port. That leaves the US with only two fleet carriers in the Pacific Ocean, an amount clearly insufficient to stop a major Japanese naval offensive.
War Department claims of the sinking of a Japanese carrier were exaggerated, sources tell us. The Japanese, according to informed sources, suffered only the loss of the light carrier Shoho. Two Japanese fleet carriers took part in the battle and one was lightly damaged while the two sank one US carrier and heavily damaged another and should be able to take part in future operations soon. This clearly indicates the superiority of the Japanese naval air arm and bodes poorly for future naval operations by the United States.
In the face of these facts, it is hard for the War Department to maintain its claim that the battle was a strategic victory. The claim of a win at Coral Sea look even more like propaganda coming as it does so soon after the raid on Tokyo. CNN broke the news that this raid was launched from a US aircraft carrier despite claims to the contrary by President Roosevelt, and CNN broke the news that the raid ended in disaster for the American forces taking part.
Our sources tell us that based on this information, the picture looks very bleak indeed for the United States in the Pacific and throughout the world, the battle coming just one day after the surrender of US forces on Corregidor and coming as it does with Nazi forces continuing their advance across North Africa while they remain poised for a new offensive deep in Russia.

If CNN had been around in WWII, most of them would have been arrested and imprisoned for giving aid and comfort to the enemy, sedition, and treason.

Can't forget the pictures of Japanese children who may have been injured during an American bombing run on a Pacific Island. Also, mention the political affiliation of any Republicans who are pro-war. Fnally, close with a full-length and unedited video from Tojo or Tokyo Rose.... just to show your 'neutrality'.

The next story: the exploitation of natural resources to maintain the war effort, and full coverage of the 6 environmentalists who are chained to a shipyard.

Come guys, y'all know that if CNN had been around at that time they would not have stopped until we were all goose-stepping in line, being perfect Krauts!

Mean ole USA drops A-bomb on Japanese. Thousands killed. CNN is sending observers to count the dead civilians. CNN says that mean ole USA had no reason to drop said A-Bomb on these poor Japanese civilians who had nothing to do with the war and were simply going about their daily lives. CNN will have Wolf Blitzass live in Japan shortly at the scene. Film at 11 on your black & white tv. Good night Chet. Good night David. And, good night for NBC news.

I have not actually read much newspaper reporting from WWII, but I have heard that much of it was indeed critical of the way the war was being carried out. I had a history professor in college who said that the government came very close to prosecuting the Chicago Tribune for what it was publishing, but I don't know if that was true.

You forgot the paid exclusive interview with Hitler, who was able to pre-screen the questions and edit out any parts of the interview he did not like.

CNN. Dateline 6/6/44. This just in. CNN has learned that the long awaited invasion of Europe has begun. Landing craft are just now being launched from secret facilities on the southern coast of England. Sources tell CNN that the target for the invasion is a strip of beach along the northern coast of France called Normandy. That contradicts earlier reports that the invasion force would land at Calais, to the east of Normandy. Sources also tell CNN that a well-orchestrated campaign to deceive the German defenders has diverted much armor and other material to the area around Calais, which has been heavily fortified. Any indication of an invasion at Calais is a diversion designed to deceive the Germans. If the Germans start now, they will have just enough time to make it to the beaches with enough firepower to repel the invaders.
This map indicates where the Allied troops will land at approximatalely 6:00 am, local time.

Wouldn't CNN have loved Hess's flight to Britain. They would have crowned him 'Prince of Peace'!
