If you are familiar with how Usenet works, you may wonder how a new group is added to the heirarchy. Well, in short, someone requests the particular newsgroup's creation in a specific group. This is then propagated throughout Usenet, and individual ISPs choose whether or not to add it to their news server.
On Tuesday, I requested the addition of the alt.tv.oreilly-factor newsgroup to be propagated throughout Usenet. My intention was for the central discussion of The O'Reilly Factor with people who watch the show either agreeing or disagreeing with him. Well, that message went through, and now my final goal is to get it on as many news servers as I can. For an ISP to add it to their news server, most require at least one paying customer to email them asking for its addition. I asked AT&T WorldNet on Wednesday, saying this:
Hi, Could you please add the new Usenet newsgroup alt.tv.oreilly-factor to your Usenet servers? Thank you, Dan
Dan, I have submitted your request and will post back once it has been added.
