Rain and Snow Bring Needed Moisture to Klamath Basin After Long, Dry Troubled Summer

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) Snow and rain over the past the week has brought Klamath Basin streams back to life, raising hopes that the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation will have an easier time meeting stringent rules for protecting endangered fish.
Last winter was one of the driest on record in the area, dropping Upper Klamath Lake to levels so low that irrigation water normally sent to 180,000 acres of farmland in the basin was cut off for much of the summer.
The cutoff left the farmland parched, and angry land owners who have relied on the irrigation project for decades protested by wrenching open the headgates to restore the irrigation flow. A $5 million project is now under way to replace the old headgates and increase security.
Despite keeping water in the lake through the summer, the Bureau of Reclamation remained worried about whether water levels would remain high enough to meet guidelines for protecting endangered sucker fish while enough water was released to protect coho salmon in the Klamath River.
The agency said Monday it now appears likely that the lake will be at the required level by the end of the year.
The flow in the Williamson River, the largest tributary to Upper Klamath Lake, is still below average for this time of year. But the total flow into the lake has increased substantially since this weekend's snow storms brought the first significant snowfall of the year.
Federal officials continue to release enough water from Upper Klamath Lake to maintain the minimum river flow required to protect coho salmon, which are migrating upstream at this time of year.

RC, This reporter obviously has NO idea of which he/she writes. The lake was HIGHER than it had been in previous years of "abundance". Peace and love, George.

Last winter was one of the driest on record in the area, dropping Upper Klamath Lake to levels so low that irrigation water normally sent to 180,000 acres of farmland in the basin was cut off for much of the summer. This is nothing but hogwash. It wasn't drought that kept the water from flowing, it as a frivoulous ruling b a liberal judge, based on junk environmental science and upheld and enforced by the Bush administration catering to the environmental lobby that cut the water off. The result was that they maintained a FULL lake all summer long and ruined 1400 hard working, patriotic American familes ... most of which had supported Bush fro President.

Thanks Jeff for getting the truth out to everyone(excellent article)! Goof ball liberal thought gets repeated often enough, and people start believing it! THE WATER WAS STOLEN FROM THE FARMERS AND GIVEN TO THE POWER COMPANY - FARMER BE DAMNED!!! THIS WAS ALSO PART OF THE "BIG PLAN" BY THE U.N. & THE NATURE CONSERVANCY AND OTHER ENVIRO'S TO MOVE THE FARMER OFF THE LAND AND BEAT ANOTHER GROUP OF WORTHY AMERICANS OUT OF WHAT IS THEIRS. nothing to see here, move along, move along,Is more direct and true.
P.S. Tell President Bush that Andy Kerr and Felice Pace are terrorists and need to be "questioned". Strictly an opinion ya know.......

We are being ousted one acre at a time. We had noticed that some local enviro's had been running ads recently for paid "activists". This morning one of the few areas left were being auctioned for logging on BLM land. Well, the enviro's showed up in the 100's, rushed the doors, blocked the timber people from entering. Last I heard 2 had been arrested. The enviro's managed to do a bunch of property damage also, tore up the bathrooms, etc. Will let you know more, when I hear.

Workers to replace canal headgates
KLAMATH FALLS (AP) 11/27/01 - A $5 million project to replace the headgates at the Klamath Basin's irrigation system is underway as workers build a new fence and install security monitors and lights at the A Canal.
The project, drawn up by the Bureau of Reclamation, calls for the eventual replacement of the entire "A" Canal headworks, which dates to 1906. The canal runs nine miles from the south end of Upper Klamath Lake, under local roads, past a high school and through suburbs to deliver irrigation water to about 180,000 acres of farmland.
Crews also will collect soil samples from beneath the canal in preparation for the next phase, which includes building new headgates and fitting them with screens to keep endangered sucker fish from entering the canal.
The screens must be designed to allow water to pass through without pinning the suckers against the screen - something the old gates likely couldn't handle.
"Those headgates are getting really old, and to attach fish screens to them with the complexity and size that is being contemplated probably wouldn't work," said Jim Bryant, chief of land and water operations for the Bureau of Reclamation's Klamath Basin Area Office.
The Bureau of Reclamation has openly questioned the efficacy of installing fish screens on the A Canal, but the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, responsible for protecting endangered suckers, has demanded the screens.
Congress has authorized the Bureau of Reclamation to spend $5 million in designing the fish screens, but total construction costs could be far greater, Bryant said. Most of the construction work will be done between the 2002 and 2003 irrigation seasons, he said.
Since last April, water in Upper Klamath Lake that normally flows to farmlands irrigated by the Klamath Project has been held in reserve for endangered shortnosed suckers and Lost River suckers living in the lake and threatened coho salmon in the Klamath River.
Last summer, hundreds of angry farmers gathered for weeks at the headgates, protesting the decision by illegally opening the gates and diverting water around the closed canal with smaller irrigation pipes.
Federal marshals were called in to keep the peace. A private security company will guard the A Canal headgates through December.

Prayers are being answered.
God Bless you all and America!!!

Peoples wells in the community are dry or going dry. The water shutoff lowered the watertable and the gov buying well water for the refuges, with the subsequent big well operation has more wells drying up. The wells on the Oregon side are stopping today. A lot of people complained. The USFWS with Phil Norton, local director are now trying to get more Cal side farms to pump water as a donation for a tax credit issued through the Cal Waterfowl Assn. as a charitable gift tax credit. The refuges are about 2/3 full and they can get water from Klamath lake which is going up like gangbusters. And that would help the rest of the wells and watertable and soak up the system. The USFWS still wants to make people think that there is a shortage and that wells are needed. It is a scam. And if big wells are pumped more, more small wells will go dry.We feel that the USFWS is using the Cal Waterfowl folks, as well putting them in the way of pending lawsuits over dried up wells. Some of us are contacting Cal Waterfowl Assn to tell them this stinks and that they should put great effort to get water from the lake, instead of this gov scheme which will dry up more small wells. And 2/3 of people with dry wells are not farmers!!!please contact Cal Waterfowl 1-916-648-1406 and tell them to not help to dry up wells, but to help get water from the lake; there is plenty.Tell them to repudiate this scheme of Norton and Usfws. No well water; get the water flowing from the lake.Ed Hubel

"Yup, as endangered as white rice."
LOL!
What I still find strange is that on 8/21/01 when I was in Klamath for the convoy rally, the lake was FULL.
I saw it myself!
And now lots of rain and snow up here.
What lies will the enviro wackos have to come up with now.

Darn, B4 don't give those enviral nazis any ideas. They will come down into our valley and find an area that only raises brown rice. Then they will make white rice an esa thing in those areas!
