Please, I have never posted a vanity before and debated on whether to do it but I really need some advice from my freeper friends. I am planning to go to New York City the day after Christmas with 2 friends (we're all women). We are taking Amtrak from Newport News, VA and staying in downtown Manhatten for 3 days. My dear sister is adamant that I do not go. She is very aware of our current situation as I am also. Comments? Thank you

Pay no attention to your sister. Go, have a great time, and please report what you see at Ground Zero.
Have a good trip. I wish I were going.

By all means, go! You'll love it. The next attack could just as easily come in Columbus or Nashville. We can't allow ourselves to be held hostage by terrorists. Make sure you set aside an afternoon to stroll down Fifth Avenue (From Central Park on down). You'll love it.

Well. No act of terror (other then anthrax) happened after sept 11th. So its not as if things are going on on daily basis. I live in Brooklyn, and I had burned papers and ash from the twin towers land in my back yard. Both of my parents used to get off at the subway station below WTC before sept 11th. And none of us have any qualms about going on with our regular lives...

NYC for Christmas? Lake Tahoe(gambling, 24/7 entertainment, skiing) or Aspen but never NYC...

I think that if you want to go, you should go.

nyc is and always has been kind of dirty, very crowded, and in my estimation highly unpleasant. this from someone who worked their daily for a decade, though i only go there now every couple of weeks. that having been said, i just put my sister on a commuter train for there, and she and my newphew, visiting from the midwest, will visit the city several times in the next week.
so i think you can get the sense that i don't think it's an especially dangerous place -- certainly, the danger to any individual was much greater during the crime-infested dinkins years than it has been recently under rudy. if one wanted to increase one's marginal safety, one would avoid places where enormous numbers of people gather, because those would be the likeliest targets for attack.
my point is, if you can overlook the aesthetic reasons for avoiding new york, you can go there in relative safety.

My mother just returned from a three-day trip to NYC and had a marvelous time as well as a sobering experience at Ground Zero. Go, and spend some money!

Remember, if you should need to ask someone for directions there is a certain protocol you should honor. It goes something like this:
"Can you tell me how to get to Manhattan or should I go **** myself?"

You have an opportunity to show your sister that life must go on. That if we waste even a day or an opportunity then we have denied this wonderful gift of life we have. Go and enjoy!!!
To: Linda
Oh wow!!! Go and have a blast! Be sure and go by the sidewalk FOXNews window during FOX & FRIENDS and wave at us.

Go, have a blast, come back and tell us all about it.
As far as the risk of terrorist attacks while you are there, it is probablly the safest place you can be right now.
NYC has a lot to offer, despite the bad things people like to say about it.
You will not regret going, as much as you will regret NOT going.

Note that Linda mentioned nothing about seeing Ground Zero. Perhaps she and her girlfriends are interested in meeting some firefighters who want to show off their hoses. ;-) Going to Ground Zero was what sparked our interest to go. That is WHY we are going. And as for your 2nd comment......well, all I can say is.........I am happily married, 34 years, so no inertest here. : ) You are bad. : )

Take your trip, you'll have a great time! I hope you'll get to see a Broadway show while you're there too.

Linda,
Ignore your sister's hysteria and come here for a good time. I live in NYC and spend plenty of time in Manhattan -- you are going to have a lot of fun.
If you haven't been here before and need ideas of things to see or show recommendations, let me know. But by all means, come here.

I recently came back from a 4 week stint with the Red Cross at Ground Zero. At NO TIME did I have the slightest fear, and that includes riding the subway and walking dark streets late at night. Everybody there is looking out for everybody else and the spirit of the town is palpable. They may not vote like us, but by God that place is fighting back and they'll be glad to see you. You'll be glad you went.
