Tech question regarding 98 clean install from upgrade disc

Posted on 12/19/2001 5:06:28 AM PST by damnlimey

Sorry for the shameless vanity but I'm desperate.
I just bought my daughter a used laptop with no OS installed ,it boots to a c: prompt.
I only have the 98 upgrade disc, and 'cos it's christmas I have no money or time to buy a full 98 disc.
So the obvious question is:
Is it possible to do a clean install with just the upgrade disc, maybe a switch or something

I don't htink you can. Just ask around, I'm sure a friend of yours has a disk.

Our guru here says that there's no way to do that with only the upgrade.

You need an original to load first.

I think the 98 Upgrade asks you to show proof during the installation process (i.e., to insert a disk) that you have a full version of Win 95.

Not sure what your "98 upgrade disk" has on it, but some of the Windows "upgrade" products in the mid-late '90's actually were full installs, if you had a valid serial number. I'd say, try the upgrade and see if it installs.

I don't think so, and really and truly, you shouldn't. You should buy the OS to put on a version that you can register. (You know that though right as Dr. Laura says?)

The reason I am telling you this is because MS is cracking down on piracy and I want you to know this from someone.

Now, I know I will be flamed, but I don't really care.

I'm sure someone will assist you with this. My suggestion would be to go do a search for prices on the web and buy a new copy.

Assuming you own Windows 95...

You can perform the install with an upgrade disc if you have a Windows 95 CD at the ready. Start installing 98 from the upgrade CD. After Setup determines you don't have 95 installed, it will say something like, "insert disc from qualifying product." Then, you swap the 95 CD in; it confirms you have a 95 CD, and tells you to reinsert the 98 upgrade CD.

That's how I remember it; others might have more specific info.

I have Windows 3.1 on floppy disks. I install that first, then do the upgrade over it. Any previous Windows operating system will work.

"Is it possible to do a clean install with just the upgrade disc, maybe a switch or something "

no....windows will prompt you for n "original ms disk", either win3.1, win95, or dos 6.22; after it "does a verify" check; it will let you proceed to install...
this would make me nervous, if its n "upgrade", i would be suspicious that the install wouldn't be complete, n the darn thing would lock-up somewhere down the road....
no used computer stores in your area? any comp users groups?good luck, n merry christmas

Since you have the upgrade disk, I'm assuming that you have another computer that you have already upgraded. You may be able to create a set of floppies that will contain your original (Windows 95) operating system from that computer (look in accessories on the start menu for a "create disks" link, or look in windows/options/cabs for a make disks application). Once you have the floppy image (about 30 disks, a real pain), you may be able to install Win 95 on the laptop from those floppies and then do the Win 98 upgrade.

I bought a copy of Windows 95 from Half-Price books for $10 so I could perform clean installs with my Windows 98 upgrade CD. You don't have to install Windows 95 first. Just install from the 98 disk and insert the 95 disk when it asks for it.

Head on over to google.com. First select the 'Groups' tab so you can do a search of their excellent usenet archives. Then use a search string like 'win98 install upgrade' or some such thing, but leave off the quotes. I seem to remeber that there IS a work around, but I don't recall exactly what it is.

Did you try the installation to see if you get an error code or a request for a previous version? Try those things and let us know what you find.

Do you always talk in such a flippant manner about theft? Do you advocate stealing out of retail stores also?

Maybe there is a Freeper near you in Polk County, FL that has an full Windows OS (any version) you can borrow. Not sure where Polk County is, I'm just above the Florida line in Houston County, AL and have all Windows OS if that is logistically helpful. I'd even be happy to mail you one if you freepmail me.

Yup. The easiest, cheapest way I can think of is to go to a Goodwill computer store - sometimes they have stuff online at www.shopgoodwill.com as well - and pick up a copy of 3.11 on floppy. Install that first, then use the upgrade.

If you don't have a Goodwill compter store near you just check out the thrift stores or just about ANY used computer store.

I haven't checked recently but a couple of month ago I was tempted to spend 10 bucks for a full set of 3.11 to keep as a back up.
