An Alaskan spaceport will host the first launch of a rocket developed by a stealthy startup company as soon as next week, spaceport officials confirmed March 20. Alaska Aerospace Corp., which operates Pacific Spaceport Complex Alaska (PSCA) on Kodiak Island, said the launch period for the flight of the unidentified vehicle runs from March 27 to April 6. It did not specify when during the day the launch would take place. Two U.S. Navy fast attack submarines surfaced from below the in the Arctic Circle during a multi-national training exercise currently taking place north of Alaska. The two submarines, the Los Angeles-class USS Hartford (SSN 768) and Seawolf-class USS Connecticut (SSN 22), both surfaced in the Beaufort Sea on March 10 as part of the ICEX 2018, a biennial exercise held in the Arctic and meant train submarine crews in extreme cold-weather conditions. This year, both fast-attack submarines as well the UK Royal Navy submarine HMS Trenchant (S91).

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - The leading three mushers have left the Shaktoolik checkpoint and are headed to Koyuk early Monday morning. According to the Iditarod's official check in time, Nicolas Petit, Bib 46, left at 1 a.m. Mar. 12. Behind him were mushers Mitch Seavey and Joar Leifseth Ulsom, who left Shaktoolik at 3:43 a.m. and 4:48 a.m., respectively. Competitors took to the snowy trail as the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race kicked off Sunday in Alaska following a trying year for the annual event. Musher Cody Strathe of Fairbanks and his 16-dog team were the first to take off across frozen Willow Lake, about 75 miles north of Anchorage. Before taking off on the trail, Strathe said he was excited to be the first to leave. He said he had a harmonica in his pocket and he plans to teach himself to play during the race.

GOP lawmakers from Ohio are pressing President Trump to uphold a promise to reverse former President Obama's decision and rename the Alaskan mountain Denali to its old name, Mt. McKinley. In a letter to Trump, the 11 lawmakers say it was "disrespectful" for Obama to change the name of the mountain, which had been named after William McKinley, a former president from Ohio.
