A powerful earthquake has hit central Chile, causing buildings to sway in the capital Santiago. The 7.9-magnitude tremor centred off the coast, about 153 miles (246km) north-west of the capital. Chilean officials said it measured 7.2. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned that "widespread hazardous tsunami waves are possible". There were no immediate reports of damage, Chile's emergency office was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Police Commissioner Yohanan Danino held a meeting Saturday to assess the security situation following the death of Hir Alhamdan, 22, and the ensuing riots and rock-throwing attacks in the Galilee, Samaria and Jerusalem, that broke out. A rocket fired late Friday night from the Gaza Strip exploded east of the border fence, in an open area in the Eshkol Regional Council. Israel's alert systems identified a rocket launch, but did not sound an alarm. The Department of Homeland Security has not issued a terror alert in response to Monday's bombings in Boston.
