The House has voted to ban the display of Confederate flags at historic federal cemeteries in the deep South. The low-profile move came Tuesday evening after a brief debate on a measure funding the National Park Service, which maintains 14 national cemeteries, most of which contain graves of Civil War soldiers. The proposal by Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., added language to block the Park Service from allowing private groups to decorate the graves of Southern soldiers with Confederate flags in states that commemorate Confederate Memorial Day. The cemeteries affected are the Andersonville and Vicksburg cemeteries in Georgia and Mississippi. “The...

COMING OUT: Obama’s sudden support of gay marriage, after publicly opposing it throughout his entire political career, may be prompted by a desperate attempt to prevent impending damage from an ongoing criminal investigation which has already produced explosive evidence about his fraudulent identity. Now, based on his bizarre flip-flop, it is probable that irrefutable evidence has been discovered by the investigation…about his own homosexual past.

Unlike the mass of war literature of the period, the following sketch in place of treating of the generals in command is simply a chronicle of passages in the war record of the "rank and file." A humble sergeant, who among the many generous high-spirited young men volunteered in "61" to fight for the perpetuation of the Union, and who through a self-negation equal to Sidney's heroic act, suffered captivity and death in the prison pen at Andersonville. Elias Leon Hyneman, one of the martyrs of our Civil war, was the son of Rebekah Hyneman, a poetess whose position in...

In the early years of the Civil War, prisoners from the North and South were rarely held in prison camps. In many cases, they were often exchanged with POWS from the opposing side. As the war dragged on, the North started holding Confederate prisoners in permanent prisons. The South started to do this too. A Confederate general recommended building a prison is rural Georgia in a location far from the front lines. A prison was established near the small village of Andersonville. It was called Camp Sumter. At its height, as many as 33000 Union prisoners were held on the...

Seymour M. Hersh, the Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter now writing for The New Yorker magazine, was asked Tuesday at the University of Michigan why Sen. John Kerry isn't easily leading the presidential race over George W. Bush when the war in Iraq is going so badly. "I think one thing you have to face up to is the fact there are roughly 70 million people in America who do not believe in evolution - and those are Bush supporters," said Hersh, who is up front about his support for Kerry. Hersh's observations about the presidential campaign, the war in Iraq...

ANDERSONVILLE, GA. -- Andersonville National Historic Site, now run by the National Park Service, has three sections: the prison field where the stockade once stood, a cemetery still burying veterans and the National Prisoner of War Museum, which serves as a memorial to all U.S. prisoners of war throughout the nation's history. ...Southerners tend to wonder why Andersonville bears such a cruel reputation when Northern prisons were also bad. Notably, in the one at Elmira, N.Y., 24 percent of 12,000 Southern prisoners died. At Andersonville, the comparable figure for deaths is 29 percent of its 45,000 Northern prisoners. .... The...
