A Democratic congressman accused Donald Trump in a federal lawsuit on Tuesday of inciting the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and of conspiring with his lawyer and extremist groups to try to prevent the Senate from certifying the results of the presidential election he lost to Joe Biden. The lawsuit from Mississippi's Rep. Bennie Thompson, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, is part of an expected wave of litigation over the Jan. 6 riot and is believed to be the first filed by a member of Congress. It seeks unspecified punitive and compensatory damages.

House Democrats are launching an investigation into President Trump’s treatment of the Secret Service during his bout with the coronavirus. Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, a Mississippi Democrat, accused Trump of disregarding the safety of his protective detail when he left Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for a short drive in his limousine to greet supporters who were outside the facility. Thompson called Trump’s Sunday night trip a “joyride” that risked the health and safety of the agents who had to accompany him on the trip. “So we can know more about how these events have affected the...

Former Vice President Joe Biden will run for president in 2020, a senior Democratic lawmaker told The Hill on Tuesday, a move that will shake up the crowded Democratic primary field and make him the clear front-runner for his party’s nomination against President Trump. “I’m giving it a shot,” Biden said matter-of-factly during a phone call with a House Democratic lawmaker within the past week — a conversation the congressman recounted to The Hill and interpreted as a sure sign that Biden will run in 2020. In the brief phone call, the former vice president asked if he could bounce...

Reps. John Lewis (D-GA) and Bennie Thompson (D-MS) announced they will no longer be attending the opening of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum on Saturday because President Trump will be there. The two African American congressmen issued a joint statement about their decision, arguing Trump’s presence ‘disrespects’ the efforts of Mississippi’s black civil rights leaders. "Trump’s attendance and his hurtful policies are an insult to the people portrayed in this civil rights museum. The struggles represented in this museum exemplify the truth of what really happened in Mississippi. President Trump’s disparaging comments about women, the disabled, immigrants and National Football...

Prosecutors charged a top congressional staffer Wednesday with filing a false security clearance form nearly a year after he pled guilty to failing to pay taxes, officials said. The Justice Department alleges that Isaac Lanier Avant, chief of staff to Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) and Democratic staff director for the Homeland Security Committee, “willfully made a false statement” on security clearance forms in 2008 and 2013, officials said in a news release.

U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson has sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, urging the Department of Justice to file a lawsuit against the state in the wake of Gov. Phil Bryant signing House Bill 1523, also known as the religious objection bill, into law. The law allows certain businesses and religious organizations to deny services to gay, lesbian or transgender people, citing religious beliefs. "I don't want my state to participate in any form of discrimination," Thompson, who represents the Second Congressional District in Mississippi, said. Thompson also called the so-called “religious freedom” act overreaching and unconstitutional. A...

This week, the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers was not the only person exposed as a racist. U.S. Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) qualified for his racism card this week when he stated on a New Nation of Islam radio show that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is an “Uncle Tom.” He reiterated the incendiary charge in an interview with CNN. Thompson claimed that it is fine to use the insulting term since he is black. It is similar to the debate regarding the “N” word as some believe it is only a problem when white people use the term,...

Congressman Thompson (D-MS): “Now all of a sudden, government is the worst thing in the world since a black man became President.”For those of you who missed it, Buzzfeed’s Andrew Kaczynski ran a post on Tuesday detailing the racist remarks Congressman Bennie Thompson made while on the radio program, New Nation of Islam. Thompson represents Mississippi’s 2nd congressional district, and has done so since 1993. Thompson began his incoherent rant by saying that essentially any opposition to the President was racist. “I’ve been in Washington. I saw three presidents now. I never saw George Bush treated like this. I never...

Via BuzzFeed, deep thoughts from Rep. Bennie Thompson, adding his two cents on a Nation of Islam radio show to the characteristically thoughtful Conversation About Race that America’s having this week. It’s fun listening to this on the same day that Chris Lehane is defending the memo he wrote for the Clinton White House nearly 20 years ago about the “vast right-wing conspiracy” that was out to take down Billary. Every Democratic president, it seems, is the subject of unprecedented conservative vitriol, although Clinton at least could point to his eventual impeachment as evidence that it was true. Thompson’s case...

The top House Democrat on homeland security criticized a division of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Friday for its role in the failed gun tracking operation, Fast and Furious, after a new report detailed the agency’s involvement. At the urging of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), officials with ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations unit did not pursue leads on potential weapons smugglers, according to the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) inspector general report released on Friday. The 84-page report also found that senior leaders in ICE’s investigative Arizona division failed to read the reports from agents...

(CNSNews.com) – Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) downplayed the threat posed to the U.S. by a Somalia-based terror group, despite a new report showing that as many as 40 Somali-American Muslims have been recruited and trained by al-Shabaab.“Al Shabaab does not appear to present any danger to this homeland,” Thompson said Wednesday at a hearing of the House Homeland Security Committee. He acknowledged that the “intelligence community sees a need to monitor Al Shabaab’s activities,” but he said “vigilance must be in direct proportion to the probability and likelihood of the threat.”At part of the hearing, the committee’s Republican staff –...

The Bill Marcy camp released their latest round of internal polling. The JMC Enterprises poll shows Bennie Thompson leading Bill Marcy by a slim 42-41 margin (certainly within the polls’ 4.5 percent margin of error). This mirrors a poll from a month ago, but with less undecided’s this time around. Before moving further, I’ll point out the same thing I pointed out last time. The racial split is effectively 50/50 for this poll. Here is what pollster John Couvillon said about the breakdown last month:
