The Russian team has once again been crowned world champions of Tank Biathlon, after defeating Kazakhstan, China, and Azerbaijan in the final round of the 2021 competition at the 7th International Army Games, held near Moscow. The competition, which started on August 22 and finished on Saturday, saw 19 countries from around the world take part, including Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Tajikistan, Myanmar, and Qatar. 18 of the teams had participated before, with Mali being the only debutants. Tank biathlon is a sport based on the winter biathlon, where skiers must race through a cross-country trail and shoot rifles at targets. In...

While the overall reaction to Caitlyn Jenner's introduction has been overwhelmingly positive, restoring our faith in the world and making Caitlyn herself feel 'humbled' and extremely happy, there are some who haven't reacted quite so well. In fact, a shocking petition has now been started urging the International Olympic Committee to actually REVOKE her incredible 1976 Olympic gold medal, as they claim she was "in violation of committee rules." Yes, really. The 65-year-old won the medal for the decathlon in the 1976 Montreal Olympics, but now some are suggesting that she should give back the medal. And by some, we...

The former psychiatrist in chief for Johns Hopkins Hospital is pouring rain on the Bruce Jenner “Call Me Caitlyn” parade that’s sure to have the former Olympic athlete’s cheerleaders steaming. Not only does Dr. Paul R. McHugh consider changing sexes “biologically impossible,” he thinks being what is popularly called “transgender” these days is actually a “mental disorder.” McHugh, who has authored six books and at least 125 peer-reviewed medical journal articles, made the statements in a piece he penned for the Wall Street Journal that argued surgery is not the solution for patients who want to live life as the...

MASSENA — Walking into the woods Saturday behind the Massena Rod and Gun Club, 155 Patterson Road, was like stepping 200 years into the past. Nearly a dozen competitors braved the elements for the first St. Lawrence Valley Primitive Snowshoe Biathlon. One by one, the racers donned their wooden snowshoes, packed their long guns with black powder and trekked through the snowy woods, stopping only to take aim at several targets scattered throughout the mile-long course. It was not only a race against the clock, but also a jump back into a world before automatic rifles and snowmobiles. Contestants as...

Most of us grew up knowing that when Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett sighted a target, it was going down. Here's an opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to see how they stack up against our folk heroes. The St. Lawrence Valley Primitive Snowshoe Biathlon, organized by the Fort La Présentation Association and Forsyth's Rifles and hosted by the Massena Rod & Gun Club, is March 3 and 4. "In our primitive biathlon, competitors on snowshoes run or walk a measured course," said Fred Hanss, an event organizer. "They must load and fire two shots from a muzzle-loading firearm at five targets...

As an American in the biathlon, Tim Burke is used to being overlooked by the sport’s most passionate fans. His German and Norwegian rivals are celebrities in their home countries, where biathlon is broadcast live on television and races draw up to 30,000 spectators. In Germany, he is perhaps best known as the boyfriend of Andrea Henkel, a two-time Olympic gold medalist. So when Burke took first place in the World Cup standings last weekend — the first time an American has ever done so — his achievement stunned the sport’s mostly European fan base.

TORINO, Italy (Army News Service, Feb. 22, 2006) – As anchor on the U.S. Biathlon’s Olympic Relay Team, Army World Class Athlete Spc. Jeremy Teela blames his poor shooting for the team’s ninth-place finish in the Men’s 4 X 7.5 kilometer Relay competition at the 2006 Winter Olympics Tuesday. “Could we have got seventh today, probably,” the Vermont National Guardsman said. “I think I messed up. I had a penalty in standing so I had to take a penalty loop.” Strong skiing on the cross-country course and just three extra shots needed on the firing line helped Jay Hakkinen of...
