  • Poll: Getting facts right key to Americans' trust in media

WASHINGTON (AP) — Trust in the news media is being eroded by perceptions of inaccuracy and bias, fueled in part by Americans' skepticism about what they read on social media. Just 6 percent of people say they have a lot of confidence in the media, putting the news industry about equal to Congress and well below the public's view of other institutions. In this presidential campaign year, Democrats were more likely to trust the news media than Republicans or independents. But trust today also goes beyond the traditional journalistic principles of accuracy, balance and fairness. Faced with ever-increasing sources of...

  • John Gibson's Back and Just Laughed at Jane Harmon

After having a substitute host all week, John Gibson returned to The Big Story today and started off his show by laughing incredulously at Jane Harmon who was trying to argue that Al Qaida in Iraq was only a small part of the insurgency and that the insurgents weren't in a position to know whether their situation was bleak or not. It was absolutely classic. I didn't see if Gibson had a smart-ass smirk but just the audio alone was awesome, particularly when he let out the giggle. I really like Gibby and it's things like this bring a smile...

In December 2004, I wrote a column that led with this line: "Mark it on your calendar: Next month, the Arab Middle East will revolt." The column placed the January 2005 Palestinian and Iraqi elections in historical context. These were not the revolutions of generals with tanks and terrorists with fatwas, but the slow revolutions of the ballot box, with political moderates and liberal reformers the genuinely revolutionary vanguard. To massage Churchill's phrase, these revolts were the beginning of democratic politics, where "jaw jaw" begins to replace "war war" and "terror terror." These slow revolts against tyranny and terror continue,...

NEW YORK -- Fox News Channel will not renew a contract with weekend host Rita Cosby, as the two sides couldn't come to an agreement on an extension, the network said. Cosby hosted "The Big Story Weekend Edition With Rita Cosby" at 9 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday at 6 p.m. she hosted "Fox News Live With Rita Cosby." Cosby will leave the network immediately. No replacement host has been appointed, nor has a decision been made on the future of the shows, Fox News said. The 'Big Story' host's departure is immediate

Laying Off the Bush-Bashing? Monday, July 26, 2004 By John Gibson The Dems say they're laying off the Bush-bashing for the convention. It's true that hating George W. Bush (search) has been the fuel that has driven the Democrat machine for months, if not years. But it's going underground now. The reason they can hide their true feelings is they know other operators will carry on for them. For instance, I was amazed Sunday to find The New York Times had managed to get a Bush-is-bad theme in every section of the Sunday paper. The first section was huge of...

Hussein's Regime Skimmed Billions From Aid Program By SUSAN SACHS AGHDAD, Iraq — In its final years in power, Saddam Hussein's government systematically extracted billions of dollars in kickbacks from companies doing business with Iraq, funneling most of the illicit funds through a network of foreign bank accounts in violation of United Nations sanctions. Millions of Iraqis were struggling to survive on rations of food and medicine. Yet the government's hidden slush funds were being fed by suppliers and oil traders from around the world who sometimes lugged suitcases full of cash to ministry offices, said Iraqi officials who supervised...
