TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - A Republican lawmaker Thursday proposed a bill that would lead to a 24-hour waiting period before women could receive abortions. The bill (SB 724), filed by Sen. Anitere Flores, R-Miami, would add to part of state law that currently requires physicians to inform women about issues such as potential risks of abortions and the gestational ages of fetuses. Under the proposal, physicians would be required to provide such information at least 24 hours before abortions are performed. Also, it would require physicians to be in the same room with the women when the information is provided.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — The Kentucky Senate has passed a bill aimed at requiring doctors to perform ultrasounds prior to abortions and describe what the procedure shows to pregnant women. The measure cleared the Republican-led Senate on a 31-5 vote Thursday. The vote came hours after the bill was approved by a Senate committee. Similar proposals passed the Senate in past years but died in the Democratic-led House. Republican Sen. Julie Raque Adams of Louisville said Thursday the bill deals with an important women's health issue.

This year’s “short session” of Virginia’s General Assembly is moving at an increasingly rapid pace in the House of Delegates as legislation is being reported out of committee and onto the House floor. We will soon approach cross-over, the term used for when bills passed in each house of the legislature are presented to the other for consideration. Included in this number will likely be a couple of measures I have sponsored which, having reported out of committee, I anticipate will soon gain passage. Another bill I submitted has proven more controversial, generating particular media attention last week. House Bill...

**SNIP** An American woman called Virginia Roberts – now a married, 31-year-old mother of three – has filed an affidavit in a Florida federal court in which she swears in gruesome detail that the late press baron and pension fiddler Robert Maxwell’s daughter Ghislaine recruited her to satisfy the sexual needs of billionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein and his friends. Those friends, according to Roberts, included the Duke of York, now fifth in line to the throne, and celebrity lawyer Alan Dershowitz (best known for getting Claus von Bulow’s conviction for murdering his wife overturned). A bill to reduce defenseless victim zones on establishments of higher learning has been introduced in the Texas legislature.  It is commonly known as a "campus carry" bill, SB11. SB11 has 19 of 20 Republican senators as authors. They are; Birdwell | Bettencourt | Burton | Campbell | Creighton | Eltife | Estes | Fraser | Hall | Hancock | Huffines | Kolkhorst | Nelson | Nichols | Perry | Schwertner | Seliger | Taylor, Larry | Taylor, Van. There are only 31 senators in the Texas senate, so a majority of senators already agree with the bill. The...

Pro-life Gov. Sam Brownback, with a backdrop of 40 pro-life legislators at Kansans for Life’s annual Rally for Life, said he was anxious to sign the newly proposed “Unborn Child Protection from Dismemberment Abortion Act.” The bill is the number one legislative priority for Kansans for Life. Approximately 1,500 rally attendees at the January 22 rally welcomed the news, having marched one-half mile together to the Capitol in Topeka with a variety of pro-life posters and banners, including the newest sign, ‘Stop dismembering unborn babies.’ The crowd was dominated by students, who came from as far away as Hays, Dodge...

MONTGOMERY – State Rep. Terri Collins, R-Decatur, says she is considering bringing back this year legislation that says an abortion can’t be performed if a fetal heartbeat can be heard. The legislation makes it unlawful for a physician to perform an abortion if a heartbeat has been detected. Medical experts say a heartbeat can be detected around six to eight weeks. The restrictive and controversial legislation has been tied up in legal fights other states, but Collins said this week she is looking for another angle, with new and different language. “We’re trying to see what the courts have said...

S.C. lawmakers gave an early push to a bill Thursday that would ban abortions at 20 weeks of pregnancy – an effort the General Assembly came close to passing last year. A five-member state House panel unanimously OK’d the “Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.” That act would ban abortion at 20 weeks – based on pro-lifers’ claims, disputed by some in the medical community, that a fetus can feel pain at that point. If the House Judiciary Committee also approves, the bill will go to the House floor for a vote. A similar bill passed the House 81-22 last...

In Indiana, pro-life state Senator Travis Holdman (R-Markle) has proposed a bill that would prohibit abortions if the abortionist knows it’s being pursued because of the unborn baby’s gender or due to a disability. The bill has been assigned to the Senate’s Health and Provider Services committee; and Chairwoman Pat Miller (R-Indianapolis) said she wanted to discuss the bill with Sen. Holdman before commenting on whether the bill will receive a hearing. According to the Indy Star, the president of Indiana Right to Life, Mike Fichter said, “We support the bill, because we don’t believe an unborn child should be...

Walking into a public health clinic for information about abortion isn't an easy choice to make. A group of Nebraska senators want to make sure anyone who does, has the facts they need to possibly reconsider. Senator Bill Kintner introduced a bill Monday that would require updated informed consent laws to be made public; both online and on the doors of any clinic that performs abortions. Those forms remind women that it's against the law for anyone to be pressured to have an abortion. So could this help bring down abortion rates? Kintner thinks so. "It might yes, it might....

An “informed consent” bill that would require women to receive information about their pregnancy and abortion alternatives before receiving an abortion has been introduced by a Tennessee lawmaker. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Mae Beavers (R), would mandate physicians to tell women how long it was since they conceived, that abortions are “in a considerable number of cases … a major surgical procedure,” and that there are agencies that can assist should she choose to not have an abortion and either keep her child or put her child up for adoption. If a woman is more than six months pregnant,...

As NRL News Today reported in December, a three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments this morning on another challenge to a different aspect of Texas’ omnibus pro-life bill, H.B.2. At issue today is the mandate that abortion facilities meet the structural requirements applicable to ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs). Outside of Texas (and pro-life circles), the 2013 law is best remembered as serving to catapult pro-abortion state Senator Wendy Davis into media celebrity status. Turned into a “icon” by her June filibuster, Davis was emboldened to take on pro-life Texas Attorney General Greg...

Doctors who perform abortions would be required to have privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the location where the abortion is performed under the first anti-abortion billed filed in the 2015 legislative session. HB 147 is sponsored by two Republicans, Pensacola Rep. Walter Bryan “Mike” Hill, former president of the Northwest Florida Tea Party, and Rep. Scott Plakon of Longwood, who pushed a bill in 2012 that would have required doctors to sign an affidavit stating the abortion is not being performed because of the sex or race of the fetus. The bill is patterned after laws in...

It’s been almost twenty years since O.J. Simpson was acquitted of murder. In what was called “the trial of the century,” a jury found Simpson not guilty of killing ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. While the football star avoided going to prison, he was later ordered to pay over thirty million dollars in compensation to the victims’ families. This wasn’t the first time that Simpson had faced allegations. In 1989, he pleaded no contest to domestic violence charges after police were called to his home. The General Assembly enacted the requirement in 2012, generating a national uproar. Abortion advocates said the measure was a medically unnecessary invasion, while anti-abortion advocates said the aim was to help women be better informed.
