Britain's top policeman has expressed concerns about the huge cost to the taxpayer of protecting Princess Eugenie and other 'B-list' royals. Scotland Yard chief Sir Paul Stephenson is looking at how best to use resources at his cash strapped force. One area of concern in his budget is the cost of providing armed, round-the-clock protection to guard the 19-year-old princess - a renowned party animal - during her hectic first year at Newcastle University. Insiders conservatively estimate it is £250,000 a year - including the salaries, accommodation, living and travel expenses of two full-time police bodyguards.

A Christian group is calling on Prince Charles to take the title 'Defender of the Faith' when he is crowned king. The Evangelical Alliance, which represents Christians across the UK, will make the submission in its Faith and Nation report due to be launched tomorrow. The Prince has previously said he would like to be sworn as the 'Defender of Faith', taking into account the numerous religious groups represented in Great Britain. Charles will become Supreme Governor of the Church of England when he is crowned king. But the Evangelical Alliance, which represents over one million evangelical Christians in the...

Confrontation is a good thing By Mark Steyn (Filed: 01/11/2005) According to The Sunday Telegraph, on this week's whirlwind tour of the Great Satan, the Prince of Wales "will try to persuade George W Bush and Americans of the merits of Islam…because he thinks the United States has been too intolerant of the religion since September 11". His Royal Highness apparently finds the Bush approach to Islam "too confrontational". If the Prince wants to take a few examples of the non-confrontational approach with him to the White House, here's a couple pulled at random from the last week's news: the...

During the papal interregnum, divided Catholics await the new Holy Father to guide them in their third millennium, in which clergy in Roman-era headdresses send news releases via e-mail. Can conservatives save the church by sticking to 20 decades of received tradition? Or will liberals energize an embattled global parish only by ending priestly celibacy or seeing condoms as a tool in stopping AIDS? Yet the new pontiff, both his personality and ideas, will affect even those of us who are not Catholics. The pope is not a CEO who serves at the pleasure of his board. Nor like a...

New Zealand viewers turned out in force to watch the funeral of Pope John Paul II, but enthusiasm for the midnight wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla was more subdued. The Pope’s funeral, broadcast live on TV One on Friday night, was watched by more than 400,000 people, according to AGB Nielsen Media research ratings. TVNZ spokeswoman Michele Camilleri said the ratings were strong, especially among older people. "I think that reflects the historical significance of the event." The timing of the nuptials of Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, was all wrong for a New Zealand audience. Just...

Staff at Windsor Castle have spoken of their frustration over "shambolic" preparations for Prince Charles's wedding. As recently as Monday many at Windsor were convinced that the wedding was going to be relocated to Balmoral to avoid further intrusive coverage. Queen Elizabeth II reportedly took it in that order Saturday as she toasted the marriage of her son and heir, Prince Charles, to the former Camilla Parker Bowles. She, like all of Britain, was keenly aware that the $1.32 million Grand National steeplechase, one of the biggest races on Britain's equine calendar, had been pushed back 25 minutes Saturday to avoid a TV coverage conflict with the prince's wedding, which had been postponed a day so he could...

For a knot-tying no-one seems to care much about, a remarkably large number of people keep asking me what my view of the Charles-Camilla nuptials is. Well, I wish the happy couple well, and I suppose it's for the best that he's making an honest woman of her. I'm not sure we're ready for a King with a "partner". Few of us would hold it against the Prince that his "fairy-tale marriage" didn't work out, were it not for the fact that he, unlike his bride and the rest of us, knew it wasn't a fairy-tale on the wedding day itself, and...

CAMILLA Parker Bowles will be given the title Princess of Wales when she marries Prince Charles on Friday, the government will announce tomorrow. The title will be confirmed in a parliamentary statement in response to a question from Andrew Mackinlay, a Labour MP. It is likely to anger supporters of the late Diana, Princess of Wales. The disclosure, four days before the wedding, is potentially more embarrassing for Parker Bowles than the earlier admission that she will one day become queen. The title remains closely linked in the public mind to Diana, especially among those who blame Parker Bowles for...

Prince Charles' visit to New Zealand inevitably provokes questions about his future suitability as King of this country. Charles is an unusual personality, not easy to pin down. There is a lack of clarity about him; a certain hesitancy. As the heir to the throne, he is in a perennially impossible situation; damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. As he once said, plaintively, "There is no set-out role for me. I'm really rather an awkward problem." That awkwardness has eased somewhat since the death of his erratic wife and the decision, finally, to marry his first and...
