LONDON (Reuters) - A massive asteroid could hit Earth in just 17 years' time, destroying life as we know it, a British space expert said Wednesday. The asteroid -- the most threatening object ever detected in space -- is 1.2 miles wide and apparently on a direct collision course with Earth. "Objects of this size only hit the Earth every one or two million years," said Dr. Benny Peiser, an asteroid expert at Liverpool John Moore's University in northern England. "In the worst case scenario, a disaster of this size would be global in its extent, would create a meltdown...

Taliban Military Seems to Get Smuggled Fuel By Richard Valdmanis NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Taliban's military appears to be receiving smuggled truckloads of jet fuel and gasoline through its borders, despite attempts by neighboring countries to shut off shipments, a U.S. official told Reuters on Thursday. ``The borders have been closed down to deliveries, but that doesn't mean non-sanctioned supplies aren't getting through,'' the official said. ``Authorities in the region are responsible, but the borders are long and porous.'' Nov. 30 — A fire destroyed an above-ground nuclear missile alert facility Thursday near Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, leaving two Air Force "missileers" trapped in the underground nuclear launch capsule below. THE TWO-MEMBER missile crew, who control 10 separate nuclear missiles and would be ultimately responsible for launching the missiles, immediately closed the blast doors on their self-contained “capsule,” buried 100 feet underground. The capsule is built to withstand a nuclear blast, and the two crew members were apparently in no direct danger from the fire above. Air Force officials said they expected the two crew members ...

There is a lot of incorrect information being put out by the media, and the huge number of vanity posts reacting to the conflicting reports has made FreeRepublic almost unusable for the last three days. I will attempt to summarize the facts here. I apologize for posting yet another vanity, but someone needs to cut through the rumors and gossip and get the real facts out. I am posting it as breaking news in the hope it will gain some momentum and reduce the number of frantic vanity posts. The Florida Secretary of State had a news conference yesterday. She ...

The Meaning of the Vote Democracy is a blessing--especially for "Broken Glass Republicans." BY PEGGY NOONAN Monday, November 6, 2000 12:01 a.m. EST I will vote Tuesday and so will most readers of this page because we love politics and history. We are interested, engaged, highly motivated. We not only care about our country but see the direct connection between the decisions made at the polls and the country's literal future. But not everyone votes, as we well know. This is considered a matter of grave concern in many quarters, but to me it is only partly a matter of ...

Bush Says He Will End 'Season of Cynicism' By Patricia WilsonGLENSIDE, Pa. (Reuters) - George W. Bush offered Americans ''a fresh start after a season of cynicism'' on Saturday as a top aide accused Al Gore of crossing the line by appearing to cast the presidential election as a choice between good and evil. The Republican nominee, confident and upbeat after the distraction of dealing with the revelation of a 24-year-old drunk-driving arrest, campaigned in battleground states promoting himself as a principled man who would lead the country to ``better days.''He castigated Vice President Gore, his Democratic opponent, as a candidate ...

NRO Weekend, October 14-15, 2000 The Al Gore Program A computer scientist has figured it out. By Ananda Gupta I am a computer-science student at the University of Maryland. I have, through unexpected means, discovered the AI program used in Al Gore’s neural net. Strangely, it appears to be a standard ANSI C++ program. I was only able to download the code for the Gore::debate function. Nonetheless, perhaps it sheds some light on the way his programming works: #include #include void Gore::debate( istream& ears, ostream& mouth ){ char *question; while( !debate.eof() ){ if ( forMe( question ) == true ...

I just saw the "Forehead" on Reliable Sources and he was railing against how the media has been giving Bush a pass and being unfair to Gore. There have been a number of articles with this theme the last few days. Additional confirmation of panic.
