Mae Beavers has lived for the past two years at a suburban home outside her legislative district, neighbors said yesterday, and building records show that she once certified the home as her ''personal residence.''</p> <p>However, the Republican lawmaker also maintains an apartment inside the district that she considers her ''legal residence,'' her attorney said. Beavers' name is on the lease and she pays the rent for the two-bedroom apartment, where she and her husband sometimes stay with her son, lawyer Hugh Green said.</p>

<p>State Rep. Mae Beavers faces a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation probe into whether she falsified her application to run for election in 2000 by misstating her address.</p> <p>Wilson County District Attorney Tom P. Thompson Jr. said a public records search for Beavers shows she used two addresses - one within her 57th House district for voter registration and nominating petitions and one within the county but outside her district on tax and loan documents. The investigation centers on whether she improperly claimed to reside within her election district.</p>

The arrest in Memphis of six suspects Wednesday on charges they were getting driver's licenses fraudulently is an isolated incident, officials with the Tennessee Department of Safety said Thursday.
