  • Outdoor Wedding Now Permitted in Catholic Archdiocese ??

    Actually that is not true.

Catholics have the obligation under Canon law to follow proper form. A marriage without Canonical form is not a valid wedding. If they did not indeed receive a dispensation from the Bishop then in fact they are not married. Annulments are granted from time to time precisely for this reason.

A priest who does not have the faculties to perform a marriage from a local bishop is not able to witness the sacrament and the weeding is invalid. For example wedding that have occurred in SSPX chapels are invalid since they do not have the faculties. Canon 1108.

I hope that Fr. Spence was misquoted, because if not this is serious misinformation. The doctrinal note from the CDF specifically said “ Hence, they must them be treated for all canonical and pastoral purposes with the same juridical criteria as people whom the Code of Canon Law places in the general category of ‘non-baptised’”.

So it is not a case of illicit baptisms, but invalid baptisms. This also does effect some sacraments. For those who were married after an invalid baptism it does not change the fact that they were married, it means they will not be sacramentally married until they are baptized. It also does not effect confessions in any real sense other than that they must be baptized before they can go to confession again now that they are aware of the problem. It does though invalidate anybody who was confirmed or ordained who was invalidly baptized. These two sacraments can only be conferred on a baptized person.

I like Dick Morris, but as a political pundit he is hardly Cassandra. I also like Newt, but it seems he is always trying to be a maverick as a pundit. How Newt though who was willing to shut down the Congress over the budget is willing to support someone that raised taxes is beyond me though.

Sure Huckabee is for the fair tax now, but his background doesn’t show this to be more than a political gambit.

I would like to like Gov. Huckabee considering his stands on pro-life and social issues. But he reminds me too much of Jimmy Carter another Southern Baptist who was pro-life and naive on foreign policy. I voted for Jimmy Carter (who made me a conservative) and I don’t want to make that mistake again.

Check out these series of lectures by Joseph Pearce on Tolkien and LOTR?

They are really excellent with tons of information on Tolkien and his viewing of his work as a fundamentally Catholic work and the deep symbolism throughout.

Rich Leonadi has an update on what Fr. Daly said about a neighboring indult Mass from a reader.

“I just spoke to the Pastor at St. Francis deSales regarding Father Daly’s Tridentine Mass column, and he is very upset. He says the article is full of lies, and he has spoken to the Auxiliary Bishop about it. First of all, as he told the Bishop, he is NOT exasperated and that this Mass is NOT a burden; he told the Bishop that if it were a burden, he would have let him know. He does not prepare two different homilies, and yes they no longer move the altar, but only because the microphone wires kept getting damaged during the process. He said that attendance is on the increase, and that it is not all elderly people and they do not attend because they want a short liturgy, because his Tridentine Mass is at least an hour long, longer than his other Masses. This priest is truly upset, and I hope Fr. Daly is called to task on this.”

The writer Karen Hall is truly an orthodox Catholic and she certainly will not be writing the show in that direction. She admires the Jesuits, but can’t stand the dissident ones - which are all to prevalent.

Women’s ordination does not cause a Latae Sentia excommunication. There is no canon directly punishing the “ordination” of women. In the past they have been formally excommunicated by their Bishops. Canon 1379 which threatens “a just penalty” for the simulation of a sacrament and a Bishop can excommunicate based on this. Canon 1319 also applies.

There is a separate penalty for simulating the Mass. (1983 CIC 1378 § 2, n. 1) calls for an automatic interdict and this can be increased to excommunication by the Bishop depending on gravity.

Canon 794: “The offense involved here is that of a lay man or woman, or even a deacon, who goes through the rites prescribed for the Mass in an attempt to celebrate the Eucharist, whether publicly or in private.”

Hail fellow Shellback, crossed multiple times myself.

As for earrings. When they started to become more acceptable to men I use to have great fun with this if I had duty on the Quarterdeck. Sailors were not allowed to wear earrings on duty and would get in trouble if they did.

Sometimes if I noticed a hole for an earring in someone’s ear at they came onboard I would point at their ear. They would think they forget to pull it out and were in trouble. Quite a laugh when they realized I fooled them (I wasn’t often a cruel Chief but duty could be so boring).

Bishop Gumbleton was the youngest bishop at the time he was appointed so you certainly make a good argument.

Joseph Cardinal Bernardin was also the youngest bishop at the time he was selected.

Cardinal Mahony was also a young bishop (38) at the time of his appointment, though I don't know if he was the youngest at the time.

This has been in the works for awhile, but he is not going to a new seminary.

"Rumors of a new seminary are false." Replied the Bishop when asked about the validity of the Naples News.com story. "Fr. Beers will be helping with a house that will be especially for younger guys if they haven't had any college education and need to take a course or two at Saginaw Valley State University. It will also be for those seminarians who are E.S.L. (English as a Second Language) and need time to become comfortable with the language. It will be a chance for some spiritual formation during those times."

I saw the same thing when the parish was blessing some blankets and had everybody extend their arms.

Theologically this is quite confusing since it confuses the priestly blessing and a lay blessing. They are not the same thing and these attempts at this so-called solidarity only blurs the line between the ordained priesthood and the priesthood of the faithful.

I wrote about my experience with the blessing "Nazi salute" here.

They actually started last week because they were waiting for Cardinal George to get better.

From the people who I have talked about it have been favorably impressed with the programming so far. The show The Catholic Guy with Lino Rulli is pretty good.

I was interviewed last week on his show and since then he has also interviewed many other notable Catholic bloggers.

I pretty much stick with EWTN, but it looks like The Catholic Channel won't totally suck, something that had initially guess would happen.
