  • The Great Blue Dog Flip Flop

    By Craig Edwards

When Obamacare passed Congress in 2010, 39 so called 'Blue Dog' House Democrats voted against the bill.  Only 13 of which survived re-election in the 2010 Mid-Terms.  When the 112th Congress voted on repealing Obamacare (HR.2), only Rep. Dan Boren (OK-2), Rep. Mike McIntyre (NC-7), and Rep. Mike Ross (AR-4) voted to repeal.  The remaining 10 instead voted instead to keep Obamacare intact.

In the aftermath of this vote, Solid Principles decided it was time to measure the distance these new supporters of Obamacare have made since November 2010. These dissenting 'Blue Dogs' obtained considerable criticism from the far-left base for voting against Obamacare, now all is forgiven.  There was also speculation that Pelosi had approved their nay vote, all the 39 'Blue Dogs' came from conservative districts, and no one wanted to face re-election by being the deciding vote on Obamacare. Even Rep. Stupak  couldn't carry that can, and he walked his own self appointed plank.

Through our own investigation, only a few Congressmen that were more then willing to milk the accolades for publicity sake. Overall, the vast majority of these candidates conducted campaigns that avoided any association to the Health Care Reform Bill. Instead, great emphasis was placed on their opposition toward Bail-Outs, Washington spending, and their supportive nature towards Veterans.

BLUE DOG FLIP FLOPPER NO:1 - Rep. Heath Shuler [D-NC-11]Rep. Shuler takes top ranking, not only for milking his 'No Vote', he boasts the point home in this You Tube video titled 'Doing what's best for our country...'.  He claims:

"I voted against the Health Care bill because it cut Medicare, not cost."

On the subject of Health Care in the 'Issue' section of his campaign website, Shuler removes any reference to Obamacare.  Had he not made this video, Rep. Altmire would've been the 'standout' by a mile.  DOWNLOAD PDF.

BLUE DOG FLIP FLOPPER NO:2 - Rep. Jason Altmire [D-PA-4]

Running a close second is Rep. Almire, mostly for this You Tube, 'Congressman Altmire's First Campaign Commercial' featuring 'Joe Public' supporting his 'No Vote' on Obamacare

Also on Altmire's campaign website is a reposted letter titled 'A Promise Kept' from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette which supports Altmire's recent no vote on Obamacare.  DOWNLOAD PDF

BLUE DOG FLIP FLOPPER NO:3: Rep. Daniel Lipinski [D-IL-3]

Rep. Lipinski is the 'Blue Dog' that almost got away with it.   With no You Tube channel to speak of to leave a pesky viral footprint, Lipinski drops the ball by issuing a statement on his campaign website on why he voted against Obamacare.

"For all of these reasons, I cannot support the health care bill. I am deeply disappointed that Congress did not develop a better bill. But whatever this bill’s fate, I will not stop fighting against special interests and for improvements to our health care system that will benefit all of the residents of the Third District. And in the days, weeks, and months ahead, I will continue working to create jobs and revive our economy.” DOWNLOAD PDF

BLUE DOG FLIP FLOPPER NO:4 - Rep. Ben Chandler [D-KY-6] On his campaign website, Chandler makes no mention on Obamacare apart from a repost from the Herald-Leader newspaper's endorsement of Ben Chandler

"Chandler's independence was on display in his vote against Obama's health care reform measure (we disagreed with him on that one nearly as much as we agreed with him on the cap-and-trade bill) and his refusal to vote for the bipartisan bailout of Wall Street". DOWNLOAD PDF
On Chandler's You Tube Channel there is no mention of Health Care, apart from a video in which Chandler shows support for Kentucky veterans and the Leestown Road VA Hospital.

BLUE DOG FLIP FLOPPER NO:5 - Rep. Steven Lynch [D-MA-96]

Rep. Lynch almost successfully avoided the 'No Vote Card' during his campaign. Even his You Tubes passed himself off as the working 'everyman', while stacking his website with 'photos-a-plenty' with Lynch posing with veterans.  Except for this statement featured on the 'Issues' section of Lynch's site (most likely written by a 'hack' campaign worker) the egg from his subsequent 'No vote' on repealing HR.2, is now forever planted on his face.

"Stephen Lynch believes that every American should have access to quality healthcare, regardless of their employment status or income level. However, he believes that the health care reform law passed earlier this year is critically flawed, in that it does very little to reform the current fee for service system." DOWNLOAD PDF

BLUE DOG FLIP FLOPPER NO:6 - Rep. Jim Matheson [D-UT-2]

Rep. Matheson deserves a special mention for his vast efforts placing enough distance between himself and his 'No Vote' on Obamacare.  Even his You Tube videos placed great emphasis on his opposition towards the Bank-Bail-Outs'. Once again, it's the statement portion of his website that ties Matheson to the hip of his 'No Vote'.  TIMBER!

"As the President has said, our health care problem is our deficit problem. I remain committed to ensuring that legislation is not only deficit neutral, but contains costs and is fiscally responsible over the long-term." DOWNLOAD PDF

BLUE DOG FLIP FLOPPER NO: 7 - Rep. Collin Peterson [D-MN-7]

Peterson also played it safe, avoiding any association with his 'No Vote'.   Even his You Tube campaign videos successfully avoided the topic of Health Care by wrapping Peterson in the flag, and attacking Washington's appetite for spending.  In retrospect, this statement on Health Care (taken from his website) seems direct proof his 'No Vote' on Obamacare in 2010, was always going to be temporary.

"Health care reform is an important goal for our country, and I have always supported reform that will bring down the cost of health care without increasing our country’s growing debt. Now that President Obama has signed the landmark health care reform bill, I will work hard to make sure that the bill is implemented fairly." DOWNLOAD PDF

BLUE DOG FLIP FLOPPER NO:8 - Rep. Tim Holden [D-PA-17]Like Peterson, Holden too wrapped himself in the flag and targeted the Veteran Voters in his campaign videos. His only connection with Health Care on this campaign website was this vague statement.

"Out of control health care costs are hurting our businesses, putting jobs on the line, and driving working families into debt. Tim is fighting to provide affordable, quality health care to Pennsylvanians who need it without putting our economy in jeopardy." DOWNLOAD PDF

BLUE DOG FLIP FLOPPER NO:9 - Rep. Larry Kissell [D-NC-8]

To distance himself from voting 'No', Kissell focused on job creation, expanding upon it further during his campaign videos. His only acknowledgement of Obamacare with his campaign website came from a media release of Kissell being Endorsed by Charlotte Post that mentions his 'No' Vote.

BLUE DOG FLIP FLOPPER NO:10 - Rep. John Barrow [D-GA-12]

Barrow wins the Obamacare Ninja Award for the being most 'Stealth Blue Dog' on the campaign front. Barrow left no hint on his 'No Vote' in 2010, either on his website or his campaign videos.  His Yes vote on HR.2 was so surprising, that I'm still stunned!

  • The Big Tree of Impatience

Last evening, I was listening to a compilation from Trojan Records. For the uninformed, Trojan Records was a classic Jamaican record label releasing Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae, Dub and every which way the genre twisted. If you could imagine the might of Stax, Motown and Blue Note Records as one entity, it would give you an idea of the magnitude by which Trojan ruled over Jamaican music. Suddenly, an old Wailers track (pre-fame Bob Marley) came on. It was the classic Lee 'Scatch' Perry produced track 'Small Axe'. Jamaica had it's fair share of political instability, and 'Small Axe' was Bob Marley's politically tinged allegory of the people as the sharp small axe, cutting down the tall tree of political leaders down to size.

So if you are the Big Tree We are the Small Axe Ready to cut you down

However, a preceding line is what truly inspired me to ponder and write this article.

Why Boasteth thyself Oh, evil men Playing smart And not being clever? I said, you're working iniquity To achieve vanity

While I don't consider Obama to be an evil leader, he is certainly vain. When history writes about Obama, it will be that of an impatient vain junior Senator from Illinois who couldn't wait. Upon barely serving a number of weeks in the Senate, he aspired to the top job in the White House. So Obama tested the waters and received considerable recognition, far beyond what any candidate would expect based on Obama's political experience at the time. A clever man would have acknowledged their own limitations and count this first attempt as a dry run. A clever man would be encouraged to know, any future Presidential aspirations may stand a good chance. However, Obama's impatience won out and he pushed aside Hillary ignoring the road ahead. While Obama is capable of playing smart, he's certainly not clever and this is why. Obama overlooked the factor that Democratic Administrations and tough economic times don't work so well together.

Democratic Administrations tend to require economic boom periods to function. LBJ enjoyed a post war economic boom which allowed him to implement his Great Society programs. Carter came into tough economic times and was unable to swim in these waters. Clinton allowed the markets to correct themselves and the Republican controlled Senate to balance the budget. During the Great Depression, the Democrats had FDR at the helm, but he was hardly a miracle worker nor was he an economic maestro. Had WWII not rolled round, FDR would've been long removed before his 3rd or 4th term. It's been said that early on during Obama's opening 100 days, he followed the FDR playbook in dealing with the economy. That was sort of true only to a point. In reality, FDR prolonged the Great Depression by putting people to work in the form of investing in infrastructure, i.e. building dams, roads and bridges. At the end of the day, once the work was completed the people were still out of work. Until now, The Obama Stimulus emphasis was towards entitlement payments, not infrastructure. Either way, the same result is achieved prolonging the crisis with nothing to show for it (unlike the evidence of 'FDR-like' infrastructure).

Just recently, 200 Billion dollars of TARP funds re-appeared, Democrats salivated at the thought of putting people back to work on (you guessed it) new infrastructure projects. Once again, the dust is blown off the FDR playbook but without a war on the horizon and with term limits in place (and the chance of being voted out of office), Obama will certainly run out of time implementing the FDR infrastructure concept. With almost 25% of Obama's first term completed, little has been achieved unless you count the failure of the Pelosi/Reid penned 'Stimulus', the endless Obama globe trotting, holding umpteenth town hall meetings, and attempting health-care reform. Reagan had to endure almost half of his first term with dire unemployment rates and low popularly polls. Until the upturn took place, Reagan's focus was working on fixing the economy, and the end result was apparent. In comparison, Obama is only now attempting to deal with job creation and improving the economy with an extremely token 'fly by night' attempt in the form of a job forum. One has to wonder, how has Obama's impatience really helped America?

If Obama hadn't let his rampant impatience get the best of him, he would've stayed in the Senate a few years, and gained some experience that he was severally lacking. He would've stepped aside in 2008 to allow Hillary to take the reins on a dismal economy and also take the eventual fall. He would've allowed the subsequent Administration to restore the economy, make all the hard decisions and complete the heavy lifting. He would've allowed them to serve their term and then taken a run at the White House. If he was successful, he would enter office with a strong economy, a large surplus to tinker with, and an affluence minded society completely susceptible to reform. But Obama was not clever to think of that concept. In tough times, people will tolerate political parties they don't agree with so long as they play the role of 'Fixer'. When Carter failed to navigate the economic icebergs, The Reagan Repulicans played the role of the economic clean up crew. When Massachusetts started to sink, Mitt Romney was sent into office to fix the mess. After his job was completed and he resigned to campaign for President, the Democrats with Deval Patrick stepped back into office. When England was in danger during WWII, the public allowed unpopular Churchill to help them defeat Hitler. When WWII was won, England voted Churchill out of office.

While the ballot results from November 2008 clearly was a win for the Democrats, they also inherited a 'Big Tree' in the spot were they had planted the seeds of hope & change. Meanwhile, conservatives sharpened their 'small axes' and started chopping without waiting until November 2012. As Bob Marley pointed out, an achievement in divine vanity wont stop the public from chopping. Obama's impatience was his undoing, precisely from the moment he threw his hat into the ring.

While Orwell's '1984' & Huxley's 'Brave New World' tend to corner the market when it comes to predicted dystopian societies, Anthony Burgess offered his own dystopian masterpiece in the form of 1962's 'The Wanting Seed'. It foresaw a culture that dealt with overpopulation by enforcing contraception, encouraging Self-sterilization and homosexuality .

Overpopulation concerns from the left, have been floating around since the publication of Paul R. Ehrlich's 'The Population Bomb' in 1968. The book was famous in exaggerating the future ramifications of excessive famine due to 'overpopulation'. Most particularly, Ehrlich claimed, "In the 1970s and 1980s hundreds of millions of people will starve to death” 1. 'The Population Bomb' brought-forth the Zero Population Growth Movements and for a brief while, ZPG was the Global Warming of it's day.

While the ZPG Movements & Ehrlich's theory have dwindled, some of the sentiments have renewed themselves into the Global Warming Movement. One of Ehrlich's theory's was 'I PAT' a formula that described the impact of human activity on the environment. Human Impact (I) on the environment equals the product of population (P), affluence (A: consumption per capita) and technology 2. 'I PAT' was the perfect blueprint for the Carbon Footprint fanatics.

The late music critic Lester Bangs once made the claim, “Nothing ever quite dies, it just comes back in a different form” 3, he might have been speaking about the ZPG movement. Now it seems, these lunatics are recycling other ZPG growth tactics in reducing the world's Carbon Footprint, reduce the future population.

Recently, two studies have turned 'Breeders' into 'Baddies', pointing the finger at woman having children, the cause for sending your carbon footprint sky-high.

A study by statisticians at Oregon State University concluded that in the United States, the carbon legacy and greenhouse gas impact of an extra child is almost 20 times more important than some of the other environmentally sensitive practices people might employ their entire lives – things like driving a high mileage car, recycling, or using energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs. 4

Not to be outdone by their American cousins, The London School of Economics released 'Fewer Emitter, Lower Emissions, Less Cost'

Every £4 spent on family planning over the next four decades would reduce global CO2 emissions by more than a ton, whereas a minimum of £19 would have to be spent on low-carbon technologies to achieve the same result, the research says.
The report, Fewer Emitter, Lower Emissions, Less Cost, concludes that family planning should be seen as one of the primary methods of emissions reduction. The UN estimates that 40 per cent of all pregnancies worldwide are unintended. 5.

Much like the agenda of the UNFPA, (The United Nations Population Fund) you can expect to encounter more Women's Empowerment' and 'Reproductive Health' concerns aimed at reducing carbon footprints. This 'New Eugenics', can now hide behind 'Green Justification'. Well done Mr. Burgess, 'The Wanting Seed' has now graduated to the school of '1984'.

committedtoromney.com was a site I posted at a few months ago. It was my foray into Political Blogging. I also produced 8 episodes of the committedtoromney.com Podcast before establishing my own site ‘Solid Principles’. A lot of the subject matter covered on the committedtoromney.com Podcasts were not Romney related and establishing a new site allowed the content to not be retrained. August is normally a quiet period for politics. A chance for Political Representatives to take a summer vacation, while news and talk radio padded for subject matter. That all changed when Obama's Health Care Reform 'went south' and Town Hall meetings to prop them up occurred. They quickly became the forum to hurl concerns towards your local Congress or Senate member. They also showed, not a lot people liked what 'Obamacare' had to offer. More then anything else, Heath Care has been the rally cry the Right needed to unite the troops together. While certain outrage persists, Health Care Reform protesters have now drifted into uncharted waters.

During the G.W Bush years, the Left defined the use of grassroots movements, creating enough momentum with them to win the Elections of 2006 & 2008. The Right has taken notice, and adopted some 'Grassroots' tactics during the Health Care Reform process. During this period of rapid action from the Right, certain alliances have attached themselves to the debate. Being a 'New Kid on the Grassroots Block', the Right is now in danger of being associated with certain characteristics. Characteristics they should be wiser in avoiding.

Anti Obama sentiment from conservatives, has been festering ever since the 44th President started passing 'Executive Orders' like ordering room service. As the Right looks to gain traction through a Anti-Obama Grassroots movement, joining this alliance is open to anyone that shares a common disagreement against Obama. With such a cheap admission price, anyone can be welcome and now the Right has inherited a murky alliance.

When Nancy Pelosi 'labeled' Health Care Reform protesters as 'Astroturf' and accused them of using 'Nazi' comparisons, some on the Right easily dismissed the Pelosi talk as proof 'She Was On The Ropes' with pushing her Health Care Bill.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Gsc_R12Q-4&feature=player_embedded

The 'Death Panel' or the 'End of Life Care' section of H.R 3200, was the main focus the Right used to prove 'Obamacare' would usher in a era of 'New Eugenics'. The nation's elder population attended Town Halls and yelled allegations how they were soon to be 'thrown under the bus' by the 'death panels'.

    Palin

Even Sarah Palin saw an opportunity to insert herself into the debate and made this comment on her Facebook page

“The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s “death panel” so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their “level of productivity in society,” whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil”.

Sarah Palin Statement on the Current Health Care Debate Facebook August 7th 2009

Around August 14th, the Senate Panel saw the writing on the walls and removed it from the Bill. It was all too late, the seed had been planted. 'Chicken Little' styled rants aimed at the clause continued at Town Hall meetings all across America. By focusing hysterically over this one section, the Right missed their chance at addressing other concerns in the Bill. larouche protester

Before I continue this next point, let me explain how much I loath Representative Barney Frank of the Fourth Congressional District of Massachusetts. I consider his Congressional performance and utter leftest agenda, a concern for us all. That being said, taking a pot shot at Barney Frank can be extremely irresistible. When a protester started bringing up Nazi comparisons to Barney Frank at a Town Hall Meeting, Frank responded to her question with his own question. “What Planet Do You Spend Your Time On?”.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYlZiWK2Iy8&feature=player_embedded

    Barney_Frank

Like I said, few can resist taking a 'Shot' at Barney Frank, these are two 'Media Pundits' that did.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te_N7RBoqjY&feature=player_embedded O’REILLY

EDITOR NOTE: While I object to Crooks & Liars using profanity in the title of their You Tube video (link abive), they were one of the only places I could locate this clip for this post. Also, O’Reilly never pointed out which Political Movement this lady was with, so it does give her a free pass..

As I mentioned earlier, the Right have inherited a murky alliance, this protester asking Rep. Frank the question was a member of the Lyndon LaRouche Movement.

Conspiracy theorist Lyndon LaRouche, leader of a fringe political cult that defies categorization, and his supporters have contributed to the divisiveness surrounding the public debate on health care reform by producing and disseminating materials comparing President Barack Obama and other government officials to Hitler, Nazis and fascists, and by attending Congressional "town hall" meeting and other events around the country.

LaRouche's organization is built upon a cadre of loyal supporters and publications that promote his conspiratorial world views. LaRouche, 86, has a long record of advancing conspiracy theories linking the AIDS crisis, the drug epidemic and international financial crises to prominent Jews and Jewish organizations.

For many years, LaRouche has employed Holocaust imagery to express his opposition to a wide range of political issues. Since May 2009, LaRouche and his network of supporters, many of which are part of the LaRouche Political Action Committee (LPAC), have focused on health care reform, producing signs, banners, pamphlets and other items that employ Nazi imagery, including the Hitler comparisons.

Taken from Lyndon LaRouche, Holocaust Imagery & the Health Care Debate © 2009 Anti-Defamation League

    obama -larouchepac

This moment, has cemented what I now call 'Cringeworthy Conservatives'. The Right were so eager in adopting anyone that disagrees with the Health Care Bill, they unknowingly sided with the LaRouche movement. An Organization that were so eager in seeking legitimacy, they came in through the door they had been rightly locked out of for years. So eager was Rush, O’Reilly & company to attack Barney Frank, they defended the antics of a LaRouche supporter. As much as I hate to admit this next point, Barney Frank was correct in asking if she really was an earthling.

Last week, I covered my local Town Hall meeting hosted by my local member Representative Kevin McCarthy for Solid Principles. I was struck by several 'Cringeworthy' moments and had to leave as it was too pathetic to endure. First of all, McCarthy has a safe GOP seat and Kern County is predominantly against Obamacare. McCarthy indicated his support for Health Reform, just not Obama's version of it (no surprises there). During question time, the audience started regurgitated the same 'End of Life' concerns and a plethora of Glenn 'Beckisms'. These tirades merged into one massive 'Cringeworthy' moment after another, as people threw themselves into a frenzy. The hope of making it as a highlight on Fox News the following day as concerned citizens was at stake. If the Right doesn't address these characteristics soon, the allegations or stigma of Right Wing Loonies, may damage it's stock.

With just enough arm twisting, the Democrats could've easily pushed this bill through already as they have numbers to do it. The GOP on the other hand, are spectators and could only fan the Public into pushing back. At the end of 'Round One' of the Health Care Debate, the bell rang while the Left were 'down for the count'. Now in 'Round Two', the GOP & Blue Dogs need to use some 'Rope A Dope' tactics. That is, wear down the energy of those pushing for the current 'Obamacare' Bill and during their fatigue, expose more objectionable elements to invigorate more public concerns. If the Right is going to use this method of defeating 'Obamacare', they need to make sure their supporters are playing with a 'full deck' to comprehend the argument. Likewise, avoiding fringe groups that are looking to use the Health Care Reform Debate as their Grassroots Débutante into the mainstream, is far more risky in avoiding.

1st of all, thank you for all your comments on this audio documentary.

I couldn’t talk to everyone for this report. I really wanted to, but also knew I was on borrowed time as the topic was drifting to the top of news articles. The day after this report was released, Drudge linked to CNET about s773 bill. In a way I was trying not to get scooped but it ended up arriving at the same time as others. I did this report to get the ball rolling on discussion and also for other people to attend to the gaps to report later on.

I see the s773 bill as the legislative attempt at Cyber Reform and something which would speed up the attempt to address the open private sector which has been slow in securing. As much as I disagree with the bill, it may have opened the lines of discussion, but I see this attempt like all others at cyber security to fail as well.

People like Glenn Beck is using the S773 as a “See, what they’re trying to do to you” point and that becomes a ‘Conservative Cringeworthy’ moment. The real issue is that cyber security reform has failed and you can’t make this a partisan issue. The risk America is facing should make people more vocal in pressing the private sector and Government to get this solved once and for all. Also, to secure their own computers from becoming infected and becoming part of a BotNet.

The most revealing points in the Audio Report was Rep. Langevin of RI, when he mentioned he wanted the civil libs groups involved and the ACLU rep I interviewed said it was a hype and a power grab. No one is in agreement and that is why we are not prepared to solve this issue.

The process after a significant cyber attack, will be worse then we imagine.
