Does a Supreme Court Ruling Mean Disney Will Lose 'Spider-Man' Rights? 11:58 AM PDT 5/21/2014 by Eriq Gardner Once rejected for not suing soon enough, the company challenging Disney's hold on the character thinks it's no longer precluded from moving forward in court. Earlier this week, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the daughter of an author to sue over rights to the Martin Scorsese film Raging Bull. The film is undoubtedly a classic, but its continued commercial prospects are limited. Unlike, say, Spider-Man and the many comic creations of Stan Lee. Now, the owners of Stan Lee Media Inc. --...

WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO: urge NBA commissioner to issue lifetime ban for Carmelo Anthony and agent Jay-Z for wearing black racist medallions; Pursuant to the action of NBA Commissioner Adam Silver in the lifetime ban of Clippers' owner Donald Sterling, Silver should be urged by the White House to stop all aspects of racism, including those by black racists. The rapper known as Jay-Z was a former part owner of the Knicks and is now a sports agent. Carmelo Anthony currently plays for the Knicks. Jay-Z was seen wearing a black supremacist medallion in the first row of...

A Mexican-themed drinking party promoted by employees of the student-run Coffee House at UC Davis has roiled the campus, threatening to ignite racial tensions even as the university ramps up admission for minorities and international students. Clad in red T-shirts and chanting slogans, about 100 UC Davis students participated Friday in a sit-in at the Coffee House, urging a boycott of the cafeteria. The protest came after some Coffee House employees promoted an off-campus party at a local park Saturday that they dubbed “Cinco de Drinko,” a name university leaders said had strong connotations of racism. The Facebook event page...

  • TRAGIC TO MAGIC, 15 YEARS LATER (remove Chick Hearn statue for his comment?)

    04/30/2014 6:20:47 PM PDT · by doug from upland · 7 replies
DFU NOTE: the comment below by Chick Hearn should spark outrage by the LGBT or LBGT or LTGB or in whatever order the initials are placed. Magic did not get the HIV virus "the wrong way." That is outrageous. We all know that "the wrong way" is now celebrated on television, in movies, in parades and "pride" festivals, and even discussed as being wonderful in our kindergartens. So it is time to do what is right. If black outrage can cause Donald Sterling to lose his team, Chick Hearn's comment should cause the gay community to demand that his statue...

  • 7 Insects You'll Be Eating in the Future

Food of the future Credit: Chad Zuber | Shutterstock.com As the human population continues to inch closer to 8 billion people, feeding all those hungry mouths will become increasingly difficult. A growing number of experts claim that people will soon have no choice but to consume insects. As if to underscore that claim, a group of students from McGill University in Montreal has won the 2013 Hult Prize, for producing a protein-rich flour made from insects. The prize gives the students $1 million in seed money to begin creating what they call Power Flour. "We will be starting with grasshoppers,"...

EXCLUSIVE: In the wake of shocking allegations of sexual abuse against Bryan Singer that surfaced five weeks before the launch of the new X-Men film, Singer has cancelled a scheduled appearance at this weekend’s WonderCon in Anaheim, Deadline hears. Fox instead will send Simon Kinberg as the studio prepares to launch the Singer-directed blockbuster X-Men: Days Of Future Past. Kinberg wrote and produced the film and has been a part of the X-Men universe since the beginning. Singer had been scheduled to be on hand to do interviews for the film that Fox opens May 23. It seems fairly obvious...
  • Woman Dies from Apparent Drug Overdose After Attending Weekend 1 (Coachella)

NOTE: On the message board was a discussion about the 24-year-old girl who died of an apparent drug overdose at Coachella. The story is referenced here - http://pitchfork.com/news/54842-coachella-attendee-dies-after-collapsing-at-festival/ What is interesting is that some were mocking the poor girl's death. It turned into a political discussion with me saying I would not mock her death but would certainly mock someone evil, like Castro. Here is one of the most staggering responses, which shows what the left has done to the education system in this country: "Pretty sure when you weigh it all out, Castro is responsible for more positive effects...

Q: If you could drill a tunnel through the whole planet and then jumped down this tunnel, how would you fall? Posted on August 3, 2012 by The Physicist Physicist: This is a beautiful question, in a small part because itÂ’s an interesting thought experiment with some clever math, but mostly because of all the reasons it couldnÂ’t be done and wouldnÂ’t work. Right off the bat; clearly a hole canÂ’t be drilled through the Earth. By the time youÂ’ve gotten no more than 30 miles down (less than 0.4% of the way through) youÂ’ll find your tunnel filling will...

Quiz Time! Today’s Problem: Chasing Daylight AUGUST 28, 2008, 12:38 PM My 11-year-old son came up with a good question the other day: Assuming a plane never had to stop to refuel, could it fly around the equator so fast that it never saw the sun set? To find out, I checked with one of my favorite online columnists: Patrick Smith, who writes “Ask the Pilot” for Salon.com. Before I reveal his reply, want to take a minute to answer the question in your head, so you can see how you did? I’ll wait right here. OK, here we go:

Hooded Car-Tipping Vandals Flip Over Smart Cars In San Francisco April 7, 2014 3:00 PM Holly Quan SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — San Francisco police are looking for vandals who tipped over four Smart Cars in two different neighborhoods early Monday morning. Police received a call about 1 a.m. that about six to eight hooded suspects were roaming the area near Bowdoin and Sweeny Streets in the city’s Portola District around the same time that a silver Smart Car—the compact eco-friendly vehicles—was found turned on it’s backend on the corner. Three other similar car tipping incidents were reported in the Bernal...

Police on Wednesday night served 25 search warrants at LAX in connection with the theft of passenger property by airport workers, officials said. Workers are accused of stealing luggage and other items in terminals and on the tarmac, authorities said. Police from both the LAPD and airport officers converged for the raids at the airport and locations across south Los Angeles County. LAX Assistant Police Chief Michael Hyams would not name the contractor involved. Most of the action at the airport took place at Terminal 4 and the Tom Bradley International terminal. Other locations included Inglewood and Paramount.

As the mystery of what happened to missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 deepens, people from all around the world are eager to help. Crowdsourcing website Tomnod.com, run by DigitalGlobe Inc., is asking its users to comb through thousands of miles of satellite imagery in search of clues that could be of use to search and rescue teams. Shay Har-Noy, director of product development at DigitalGlobe, said they have millions of people using their website to look for anything out of place. More than two million people have donated their time thus far, flagging 645,000 features on images that look unusual....
  • Worker fired for using forklift on candy machine

    02/20/2014 7:44:07 PM PST · by doug from upland · 22 replies
MILFORD, Iowa —A 27-year-old man has lost his job and Iowa unemployment benefits for using a forklift on a malfunctioning vending machine. The Des Moines Register says Robert McKevitt had deposited money in a vending machine last fall, but the candy bar he wanted wouldn't fall. State unemployment records say his banging and rocking the machine didn't work, so McKevitt commandeered a forklift, picked up the machine at least six times and dropped it on the floor at the Polaris Industries' warehouse in Milford. Three candy bars fell. In a ruling released last month, a judge denied McKevitt's claim for...
