  • Open source's totally non-secret weapon big tech dares not use: Staying relevant

According to the Register’s hack reporter:

    > There may seem to be no FOSS equivalent of Azure or AWS or Google Cloud Platform, but the intellectual infrastructure that open source provides through the ecosystem of libraries and frameworks is arguably as important to modern IT as the cloud itself.

    Really?
    OKD? docker?

Either lazy researching/reporting, or Dan Walsh said something mean to him online that one time...

Maybe Chris should have asked the police reps if, had the mother said it was a 'pro illegal immigration rally' and not a graduation party, would the cops have left all the attendees alone.

  • Robby Gordon says Patrick has an unfair advantage (Indy 500)

Danica came from Formula Atlantic. Last time I checked the FCS section of the SCCA GCR (surely all racing experts know that THAT is) FA required a minimum weight WITH driver. Danica did very well when weight was NOT a factor. While Robby Gordon *IS* a whiner (and the sour grapes might have as much to do with with being jealous of Tom Kendall)

The praise in here is really backhanded. Just as with Affirmative Action, if Danica wins, people will be able to say "well, it's because she weighed less". That's a disservice to not only Danica's racing talent, but all small drivers who went before her. Jim Clark didn't need that advantage and neither does she. A truer "weight advantage" in racing is being able to put ballast closer to the CG of the car. The fact that anyone is making a big about this now, as opposed to when that Fisher brat showed up, says that there is alot more respect for Danicas driving talent.

As to all the variants of the "just shut up and drive" comments. RG couldn't do that as the Indy 500 start time was moved to create a scheduling conflict with the NASCAR race, thereby preventing any NASCAR regulars from entering.

NASCAR in NY. First the Republican convention, and now this.

Actually, NY allready has a track that NASCAR races at. It's called Watkins Glen. One of a few REAL race tracks that NASCAR visits.

Stop... wait... yer both right (err, sorta)

Like the "N word", the "H word" was and is a derogatory term when used by someone who is not of Magyar or also Slavic heritage. For a person that is of such heritage, the words power depends on context of usage. Originally used as derogatory word by the "old immigrants" running the steel mills and coal mines to refer to the "dumb and cheap" labor the "new immigrants" were. Think of the way a union man might refer to a "scab". In pre-union days, the "new immigrants" were serving much the same purpose.
In time, the "new immigrants" moved "up the hill" (a sign of prosperity in SW PA industrial towns) and in turn their role in the mills and mines were taken by other ethnic groups. That led to the "N word" and others being used, and in turn words like honky, which referred to both old and new white immigrants, and the sting of "hunky" lessened and in the 60s and 70s became a word of ethnic pride.

In a similar vein. I remember learning with pride the story of folk hero Joe Magarac, but to hear an outsider talk about him and the translation of his name. argh!!!!

Speaking of translating names, you can call me "Mr Big"

Remember, it is standard policy for a 'rat to falsely accuse people of something, and then turn around and take part in exactly the behavior they accuse others of.

Given that, I suspect that Dean will now become a "flag waver" and say that it's unpatriotic for the press or other candidates to be critical of him. We already see this from the ole zagNUT general himself, with his "new patriotism".

In general, I could care less what window manager people like, so long as xterms work properly and I can cut and paste between them. In the early 90s I was using a telray T10 and tty multiplexers like screen when everyone else was making big todos about silly things like "multi-finder" "os/2" and "Windows 3.x"

Hey Bill Joy, in case you hadn't noticed, OS/X is pretty much a Power-NeXT. Everything being said today about the new Macs are exactly what was said about the NeXTs 10 years ago.

Wasn't NeXT one of your competitors for the Workstation market?

I guess it's ok now though, since yer buddy Scott has pretty much driven SMCC into the ground. Ten tries and you still can't get SvR4 right. No wonder you praise a "bsd-based" box.

I seem to recall Ford was not happy with their motors going into the Rootes Group (Chrysler Europe) vehicles like the Alpine. And I think there was one more from England--the TVR, which I got to drive briefly in Iowa City. This car was an abomination, poorly assembled, with the steering column off-set to make way for the engine. It would go like Hell, tho.

How do you think Chrysler felt, having to have a supply of ford parts?

You are thinking of the Griffith. about 200 or so built on a chassis originally designed to deal with either the 1600 MG B-Unit or the "big" 2.5L Triumph 4

I took it to mean that Bush is a clever guy able to make something out of nearly nothing :-)

Making something out of nothing is something alot of SNL players had to do with Franken's scripts.

Funny, I don't remember much of anything from my liberal arts classes at PSU, except for the cute TA in spanish class. Most of the math, CS, and Engineering professors were either not flaming leftists, or smart enough to leave their politics out of the classroom.
I think I got there just after the great Jim Whitehead event. Boy, talk about pissing off the lefties.

ps. Everyone knows Gary, the Willard Preacher was much cooler than the other guys.

Interesting, really. I don't recall ever seeing any slam-piece regarding Al Franken and his wife's battles with alcoholism, originating from conservative attacks.

That would be the same Al Franken, who as a head writer at SNL, would have been involved in writing/approval process of the Chris Farley "motivational speaker" sketches '..living in a van, down by the river.' all the while Farley was having a major RECREATIONAL drug problem, that he ultimately died from.

If Al wants to see real hypocracy, he need to take a clue from another of his sketches (Stuart Smalley) and take a look in the mirror.

I've had cats almost all my life.. some indoors only, some constanlty going in and out. Some clawed, some declawed. One declawed cat learned to still take out birds by lying in wait near the neighbors bird feeder and tackling the birds. Another cat that went in and out would tease large dogs, get into fights with raccoons and groundhogs, and ran after deer who strayed into the back yards. Same cat was also the happiest, laziest lap cat you've ever seen when in the house with people.

When my wife and I bought a house, we looked at getting cats again. We saw the same papers and said FORGET IT. We ended up getting two cats from a coworker, who ended up being the two biggest baby indoor cats you have ever seen. They fear anything larger than a bug, and cry for us to come and kill anything smaller that they find. 16-18 lbs apiece, and yet they are bullied by our pet rabbits, and chased by one that is 1/4th their size. Sticking their nose out the front door for a minute is more than enough outside for them, and they are happiest sitting at or sleeping upon my feet.

Cats are at their best if allowed to do what they like the most. Some like the outdoors, some don't.

PS. We did sign a document when we rescued a Rabbit from the pound, only it said. "I promise not to eat the rabbit". It said nothing about THREATENING to. Waving a pot and shouting "hossenfeffer" does wonders for keeping them in line... for 5 seconds.
