Robert Redford's fascination with politics didn't go unnoticed during a tribute to the actor at the 74th Academy Awards on Sunday night.

In fact, Mr. Redford might have given the most incredible performance of his career when narrating radio ads last week for the Natural Resources Defense Council, claiming that higher government fuel-economy standards means "safer" cars.

In the immediate aftermath of Tuesday's attacks, attention has focused on terrorist chieftain Osama bin Laden. And he may well be responsible. But intelligence and law enforcement officials investigating the case would do well to at least consider another possibility: that the attacks--whether perpetrated by bin Laden and his associates or by others--were sponsored, supported, and perhaps even ordered by Saddam Hussein. Some notes on installing Linux 2.2.14-15 (using the Mandrake 7.0 distribution) on a DELL Latitude CPi-R series laptop. I've also installed Mandrake 8.0 (Linux 2.4.3), but ran into problems with the sound card not being recognized for the NeoMagic AV (nm256av) card. Otherwise, it was actually easier to install and configure than the Mandrake 7.0 distribution. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- What to do: Installing Linux: 1). Partition the hard drive (see "Setting up for a Dual-Boot system"). 2). Install Linux (see "Installing Linux"). 3). Configure Linux (see "Configuring the Laptop"). 4). Test the Modem (see "Modem Testing"). 5). Configure startup options (see "Messing ...

I have a couple of questions for all of you Linux gurus out there. Firstly, I've installed linux 2.2.14-15 on a Dell Latitude CPi - R 400GT laptop (I used the excellent Mandrake 7.0 distribution). Everything works most excellent, except that I can't seem to get my modem and network card working properly. I have a Xircom RBEM56G-100 (not the RBEM56G-100BTX). This is a dual-boot system (windows 2000 is the default) and, according to windows, the network card is in COM4. To get the modem to work, I did a statserial on cua03 and ttyS3 (some docs say to use ...

It's been a slow news summer and many in the media are having a tough time trying to find something to write about. I know. I'm also in the media. But, when I pick up the week-end papers like the Salt Lake Tribune, which was founded, apparently, to write negative articles about the dominate religion of Utah state and find several articles and an editorial religion, I have to comment. One article was about a University student who refused to use the words "God" and "Christ" as profanity; another article was about the dominant church's request to be called by ...

A few minutes after President George W. Bush completed his talk to America about stem cell research I received an e-mail from a reader, Marty Card, who said: "Well, just after the President announced his decision, I heard one media type say that "The President has decided to allow federal funding for very limited research on cell lines..." then he said something about embryos that "might not survive the freezing process" that would be used in these existing cell lines. Guess he wasn't paying attention to the President's speech, in which he very distinctly said that these cell lines were ...

As of May 9, 2001 Eighty-Four nations have signed the Kyoto Protocol designed to regulate global climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. But only 34 of them have ratified the treaty. Of those, one European nation, Romania, has ratified the treaty Rest of article here

Editor's note: Shortly after Officer Redfield delivered this speech, he was put on administrative leave, pending an investigation. Many residents of Klamath County reading this letter will identify my name with law enforcement as I have been a member of the Klamath Falls Police Department for over 39 years. The content of this letter is not necessarily the opinion of the City of Klamath Falls or the Klamath Falls Police Department. Rest of article here

Steve M., a reader, e-mailed me with the question over the week-end: "Mary, have you taken a position on embryonic stem cell research? I would like to know your opinion." Rest of article here

Take out a one dollar bill and look at it. The one dollar bill you're looking at first came off the presses in 1957 in its present design. This so-called paper money is in fact a cotton and linen blend, with red and blue minute silk fibers running through it. It is actually material. We've all washed it without it falling apart. A special blend of ink is used, the contents we will never know. It is overprinted with symbols and then it is starched to make it water resistant and pressed to give it that nice crisp look. If ...

CLEARWATER -- The topic was domestic violence, a favorite of Janet Reno's, and more than 200 police and social workers sat rapt last week as she detailed the approaches she has taken over the years. Her voice was firm and steady, but her hands at times acted on their own, bouncing at her sides, thumping the lectern, shaking back and forth as she held them out to make a point. Over the past few years THE PRAYER given by Rev. Joe Wright at the January 23, 1996 opening of the Kansas legislature has been sent to me a number of times by a variety of people. I always re-read it and think about it. However, I've never commented on it. However, the debate and the House vote on President Bush's "Faith-Based" initiative tells me the time has come to comment on it Rest of article here

On June 20th, the Washington, D.C. Commission on Human Rights ruled that the Boy Scouts of America violated the city's anti-discrimination law by expelling two adult Eagle Scouts in 1992 for being gay. The Commission charged that the men were "subjected to humiliation, embarrassment and indignity" when the Boy Scouts revoked their membership in 1992, ordered the Boy Scouts and the National Capital Area Council to re-admit both men as adult members and pay each of them $50,000 in compensatory damages plus their attorney fees. Last night, channel 15 in Phoenix stated several times that two counties in Florida (Seminole and, I think, Martin) had the voter id of their ballots altered by the pubbies. In actual fact, the ballots were not even touched - it was the ballot request forms which were changed. The phone number of channel 15 is (602) 685-6397. As always, remember to be polite if you call.

Nancy Pincombe of Reston, Va., just returned with her husband, Ron, from Disney World's Epcot Center in Florida, where they attracted a great deal of attention. "I can honestly tell you that 200 to 300 people came up to us, so many that we finally stopped counting," says Mrs. Pincombe. "The reaction was nothing like we expected. It was overwhelming. Often people would follow us, walking two feet behind my husband and snapping photographs. People were applauding, giving us high-fives. It was incredible!" Everybody you encountered reacted this way? "Only one guy came up to us and asked us if ...

CHICAGO -- A gay-rights advocacy group plans to lobby school districts across the country to stop sponsoring Boy Scout troops unless the organization reverses its ban on gays. The initiative is a centerpiece of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network's annual conference, which began Friday in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights. M.K. Cullen, the group's public policy director, said the goal is to end the "unique and special access" the Boy Scouts get to schools. Link to rest of article

The United Way of Palm Beach County warned local Boy Scouts on Thursday morning to be prepared to lose $118,000 in contributions in two years if the organization doesn't alter its policy against admitting gays. The United Way's board of directors, in a 23-9 vote, decided against immediately cutting off financing to the Boy Scouts, saying that would be unfair to donors who plan to contribute in the 2000-2001 campaign, which began in July, said Chairwoman Gale Howden. A day after being barred from the first presidential debate, Ralph Nader called for an end to the commission sponsoring them and threatened legal action. At a rally yesterday with 600 people at the University of Hartford in Connecticut, the Green Party presidential candidate blasted "the winner-take-all, two-party duopoly." He also spoke harshly about Democratic vice-presidential candidate Joseph I. Lieberman, calling him a "political sorcerer," the Associated Press reported. Speaking to the media, Mr. Nader showed off the ticket he obtained for the debate Tuesday night in Boston. But an official from the Commission on Presidential Debates stopped him ...
