Oregon Republican senators have left the Capitol and scattered in various directions outside the state in order to avoid being rounded up by troopers for a high-profile climate bill vote scheduled today. Reached just after 7 a.m. Thursday, Sen. Cliff Bentz of Ontario said he was on his way out of the state. "In a few moments, I will not be in Oregon,” said Bentz, who spent most of Wednesday meeting with Gov. Kate Brown’s staff in an effort to negotiate changes to the carbon cap-and-trade plan, House Bill 2020.

Maude Lamont, a Philadelphia native who has been acting principal of Wilson High School since 2018, resigned this week after WW asked Portland Public Schools if it was investigating her for taking narcotics from the high school's evidence room. The announcement of her resignation came May 13, three days after WW asked the school district questions about the alleged February incident. The district is not speaking about the reason for Lamont's resignation. "We are aware of the allegations and are taking all appropriate steps to address them," says district spokesman Harry Esteve. "It is a confidential personnel matter, so we...

Southern Oregon marijuana growers want to ban industrial hemp production from the region out of fear that hemp may pollinate their crops and render them worthless. Some outdoor marijuana growers want industrial hemp cultivation to be limited to eastern Oregon - far from their lucrative marijuana crops. At the very least, they don't want hemp in Josephine, Jackson and Douglas counties. Compared to Oregon's marijuana legalization movement, the effort to launch an industrial hemp industry in Oregon has been an understated one propelled by a small but passionate group of advocates. When one of them, Edgar Winters, of Eagle Point,...

Attorney General Gorelick? Could the creator of the "wall of separation" between foreign and domestic investigations become the next Attorney General of the United States? Would you trust a person who's up to her elbows in the current financial upheaval to persue due diligence in the FBI's investigation of the key players in that debacle? Would President Obama, himself the number two beneficiary of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae's political largesse, allow his Attorney General to prosecute these cases? Would you have faith in the advise and consent capacity of a Senate composed of nearly 60 Democrats, among them Christopher...
