Coffee shortage brews trouble in Venezuela National Guard seizes 330 tons of beans Thursday, January 5, 2006; Posted: 11:18 a.m. EST (16:18 GMT) CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- Coffee is vanishing from Venezuelan stores as producers protest price controls they say are strangling profits -- no laughing matter in a country where drinking the bitter brew is not simply a habit but a culture. Troops and inspectors have begun raiding inventories held by private companies in an effort to ease the scarcity, authorities said on Wednesday. ...

In the U.S., it's come like a wave. All of a sudden, far-left media outlets are shilling, embarrassingly enough, for a dreaded Giant Corporation (an oil company!), Citgo, the refining and gasoline retailer once known as Cities Service. Formerly best-known for a massive neon advertising sign over Boston's Kendall Square, easily visible in nightime panoramas of the Back Bay skyline, Citgo was acquired by the Venezuelan government oil company a number of years ago. This left wing apostacy from the doctrine of corporate original sin is ridiculous. It has happened in the last two days like a coordinated effort from...

A UNLV professor under fire for comments he made about homosexuals during a class lecture last year demanded Friday that the university stop threatening to punish him. "I have done absolutely nothing wrong," said the professor, Hans Hoppe, a conservative libertarian economist with almost 20 years teaching experience at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada, on Hoppe's behalf, sent a letter to UNLV officials alleging that the university violated Hoppe's free speech rights and his right to academic freedom. "The charge against professor Hoppe is totally specious and without merit," reads the letter...

According to the local Republican headquarters, Bush is scheduled to visit the Fox Cities area Saturday at the Fox Cities Stadium. Doors open at 9:00am. Also, because of overwhelming demand, they've run out of yard signs for Bush/Cheney. A good sign, I think.

Green Bay, Wisconsin - A third-grader was suspended for one day for bringing a keychain shaped like a gun to school, school officials said. The 8-year-old boy's mother said she plans to appeal the suspension, which she called extreme. The boy apparently was showing the keychain to other students when a few told the classroom teacher about it. The keychain, bought from a restaurant vending machine, has a plastic toy gun that is less than two inches long. Supt. Tom Joynt said the one-day suspension would "emphsize the importance of safety."
