Forgot to mention that, when using the shield-support longwall mining system from the Soviet Union, intentional subsidence is part of the mining method--that is, as the coal in a given longwall panel is removed and the shields that protect the miners move forward, the overlying strata is allowed to collapse.

SIDENET said: "What a damn bunch of idiots. IIRC, the US has more high quality coal than it knows what to do with."

Maybe so; but how much of that coal is mineable?

In the WV county where I live, there are 14 seams of coal. Three of those coal seams are/were "mineable". However--

In 1975, a shield-support longwall mining system from the Soviet Union began to be used to mine the deepest coal seam in this area (the Pittsburgh #8 seam, in the Northern Appalachians of WV and PA), thus damaging/destroying all of the overlying seams of coal (right along with surface structures/homes and water sources/supplies, BTW)--and (as if that isn't enough), there is no known mining method for retrieving any of that overlying coal/rubble!

"...the US has more high quality coal than it knows what to do with." ??? Wanna bet the nation's largest exporter of longwall-mined coal would disagree with ya?

At my age—three-score-and-ten plus—you’d think that any mention of Cletus on the Simpsons would ring a bell, wouldn’t you? Unfortunately, I haven’t watched cartoons since our granddaughter outgrew ‘em.

As for what you’re having for dinner? Lemme look into my slightly cracked magic-mirror and . . . hm-m-m. Veddy, veddy interesting. Is that blackbird baked in a pie . . . or crow?

When you tell me, "She should send a copy of this to the Mexican government so they can do something about the fresh water problem their children have.", I can't believe that's how you interpret Ms. Giovanni's [uh] "poem"! I mean, really! [tsk]

Ain't it at all possible that the Thug Life-tattooed--ala Tupac--[uh]"poet/teacher" was only trying to follow the good example of Emily Dickinson, a real poet who believed in telling all the truth but telling it slant?

Like: Isn't it possible that Ms. Giovanni was referring to Mexicans who sneak across the border and wander around for days in the desert simply looking for work?

    VirginiaConstitutionalist asked:
"Huh? Is there a babies-crushed-by-boulders-because-of-greedy-miners epidemic I didn't hear about?"
Although this thread doesn't appear to be about the contents of Ms. Giovanni's so-called "poem"--but about whether Cho was taught to hate or not--VirginiaConstitutionalist's question seems, nonetheless, to be a valid one. So . . . perhaps an appropriate answer can be found at the following URL(?):

    ohioWfan asked:
"Does anyone know what the 'Appalachian infant' thing is all about? Very strange, I thought...."
    bpjam replied:
"When you mine for coal in West Virginia (where she is most likely referring to), you can destabilize the ground and cause settling of the soil which can be a hazard to buildings. ...."
But . . . the January 6, 2005 issue of the Washington Post indicates that it wasn't in West Virginia that the half-ton boulder "...hurled like a cannonball into Dennis and Cindy Davidson's house, right through the wall of the bedroom and onto the bed where 3-year-old Jeremy was sleeping. ...and continued its path, crashing through a closet before finally stopping at the foot of 8-year-old Zachary's bed. Zachary would be fine. Jeremy was crushed to death."

That didn't happen in the State of West Virginia; and it didn't happen because the ground was destabilized by coal mining. It happened in southwestern, Virginia, where "A bulldozer operator widening a road at a strip mining operation atop Black Mountain unknowingly dislodged the half-ton boulder that August [2004] night."

Also: As a West (by God!) Virginia "hick" (?) whose own property was destroyed by irresponsible coal mining practices, I lose all sense of humour when a valid question receives an obnoxious reply such as the following (by word_warrior bob):
"She needed to include white people, so the hick Appalachian infant is killed by a boulder rolling over their shack, think Cletus from the Simpsons."
word_warrior bob's attitude tells me more about him (and what he "needed"!) than it does about Giovanni and/or her Thug Life-inspired rah-rah sis-boom-bah cheerleading style at a convocation for dead students and faculty members!

    One Year Wedding Anniversary
    Current Mood: grateful
    Category: Life

Well I can't believe it but my husband and I have been married a year on March 10, 2007. I guess what they say is true. Time flies when you are having fun. Seems like we just got married. My husband couldn't believe it's been a year already. He asked to see the wedding certificate to be sure. LOL Everything has been going great. I look forward to many years to come and wonder if they will go as fast. I hope not. I relish every moment I spend and have with him.

THAT Friday the 9th blog entry was posted at 12:55 AM--more than likely before she went to bed. Then, Friday afternoon, at 1:18 PM, she posted "A Poem I wrote in 2002"--BUT (interestingly enough!) indicating a 2007 copyright under her maiden-name, Adriana Lea Midwood. The poem begins by saying "You told me you loved me, / You told me a lie."

You'll find--in addition to the rest of the poem--only two more blog entries ("Married Life!!, Current Mood: loved", dated March 15, 2006; and "All About Me, Current Mood: tired", dated January 23, 2006.**) at the following URL:

New Report: longwall mining destroying NSW rivers

    Thursday, 25 January 2007

Underground coal mining is resulting in major damage to the state's water resources and the Iemma Government can no longer afford to ignore the problem says a report released today by the Total Environment Center.

The "Impacts of Longwall Coal Mining on the Environment in NSW" is the first full state survey and shows that longwall mining, which causes surface subsidence, has damaged many rivers and creeks in all of NSW's major coalfields; is destroying waterways in Sydney's supply catchment; that remediation work to repair the damage is largely ineffectual; and the Department of Mineral Resources is inappropriate as the approval body for new mining projects.

    (snip)

"The NSW Government cannot be taken seriously on water issues until it stops the destruction being wrought upon our catchments by longwall mining," said TEC Natural Areas Campaigner David Burgess.

"Numerous rivers and creeks within Sydney's southern catchments have been cracked and drained. Our latest discovery was the Waratah Rivulet, which makes up to 30% of the Woronora Dam Catchment and supplies Sutherland with its drinking water."

"Water is the issue at the top of the political agenda but the Iemma Government is simply allowing it to drain through the cracks in areas where longwall mining is taking place. There are no measures being taken to prevent damage. ..." (snip)

    Spanking? Paddling? Beating?

A news article in the Chicago Tribune--"Minister beat girl with stick, cops say"--indicates that there were welts and bruises on the girl's legs and buttocks!

Oh well, just one more American dead at the hands of the flesh traders. Don't worry, Frist and Hastert will make sure there are no criminal penalties for this womans violation of our borders.

First of all, you guessed wrong, Lurker! Not only did I not miss that part, I also clicked on the link to that newspaper article to see if, perhaps, the word "killer" was used in the headline. It wasn't!

"Just one more American dead at the hands of the flesh traders.", you say? "Just one more American dead" = the five-month-old baby; but who are the "flesh traders" you're talking about and how are/were they involved in the baby's death? As for anything that Frist and/or Hastert "will make sure": Are you psychic, or what?
