...These groups are drivers of crime, corruption, violence, and misery. In particular, the trafficking by cartels of controlled substances has triggered a resurgence in deadly drug abuse and a corresponding rise in violent crime related to drugs. Likewise, the trafficking and smuggling of human beings by transnational criminal groups risks creating a humanitarian crisis. These crimes, along with many others, are enriching and empowering these organizations to the detriment of the American people...

ESSEX COUNTY — Facing a contingent of concerned parents, a growing number of school districts across the state are moving to create official opt-out policies for students who will not be taking the PARCC exam, a new state test that will be administered for the first time next month. The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers test, which is based on the Common Core education standards and is administered entirely on computers, has sparked harsh criticisms from some skeptical parents and teachers. The complaints have led to an "opt-out" movement across the state, in which parents are...

On March 18, 2000, The New York Times’ Op-Ed page cheered the Vermont House of Representatives for its approval of legislation giving gays and lesbians the right to form legally recognized unions with "nearly all the benefits and responsibilities of civil marriage." As one New York—based publicist recently found out, those benefits do not yet include coverage in The Times’ Sunday Weddings section. On Aug. 30, Joseph Quenqua, the vice president of mPRm Public Relations’ New York film division, and his partner, writer Art Smith, plan to make their seven-year relationship legal with a civil-union ceremony on Lake Champlain in ...

Over the past few months I have noticed that the amount of graffiti in NYC has increased significantly. For example, on the corner of Columbus and 86th Street, there is a news stand that has been repainted several times over this past month because it keeps getting "tagged." Several storefronts on the bucolic Upper West Side have been hit as well. Additionally, just this morning, I saw more graffiti on a bus stand on 42nd Street. Has anyone else who lives in the city, or visits often, noticed increase in the amount of graffiti?

In the late autumn of 1976 the senior senator from Massachusetts arrived in Athens, accompanied by his usual large entourage as well as his nephew, Joe. Kennedy had been invited by the then-Greek Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis because of the Senator’s ferocious opposition to the military junta which had collapsed two years prior. I was living in Athens at the time, writing a book on the colonels and stringing for UPI and National Review. I was forewarned of the Senator’s visit when Bill Van Den Heuvel, a Kennedy gofer, rang me from New York and asked me if I could ...

I would like for all Freepers, at their convenience, to concentrate on one Congressmen to get Gore to concede. I think this might have a bigger impact than if we all just call and voice our concerns on our own Congressman. Therefore, I ask anyone within reach of a phone to call Congressman Frank Pallone (D) of New Jersey, and tell his office that you will no longer donate to his campaign if he does not ask Gore to concede. Get on the office guy's good side and tell him you have been a big supporter of Pallone for years ...

Bush on the Offensive; The Underdog Has Woken Up I wrestled with a question of balance last Saturday. It was a breezy, sunny morning downtown, and the sight of MUGGER III and a bunch of other six-year-olds booting the soccer ball around the field, garbed in their electric-yellow Newcastle jerseys, took the breath away from Mrs. M and me. Later in the afternoon, however, Junior and I watched the Red Sox’s season end at Fenway Park in the top of the seventh inning, as the incomparable Pedro Martinez surrendered a three-run homer to Scott Brosius, one of the Yanks’ clutch ...

WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP)--In a victory for advocates of states' rights, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 yesterday that Tennessee citizens are sentient beings with a capacity to make certain decisions for themselves. Chief Justice William Rehnquist, writing the Court's majority opinion, stated that, "The absence of higher forms of cognitive thinking skills on a statewide level does not preclude the application of the individual liberties guaranteed in the First Amendment to the residents of that state, no matter how strong the evidence is toward their collective lack of intelligence."
