This morning we attended our neighborhood parish. Most Sundays we attend the local Indult Mass or drive some miles to attend Mass at a more traditional Novus Ordo parish. I will highlight only two practices that make it most unlikely we will ever return. As we knelt silently praying before Mass, a shrieking voice announced to all: "Please stand and introduce yourself to your neighbors." When some of us did not comply, the voice shrieked again, "Please stand and intriduce yourself to your neighbor." At that point, I knew this was not going to work. The next absurdity occurred after...

This past Sunday, April 30, Robert Petratos, a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Parish in Cleveland, was shoved by an usher and banned from attending Mass by the new associate pastor of St. Rose, Father William Rooney, O.F.M. Petratos, a longtime parishioner, was accosted for passing out to other parishioners a personal letter he had written concerning the abrupt decision by the new "pastoral team" (including Father Bill Rooney) to end the Traditional Latin Mass at St. Rose. According to Petratos, a humble man and devout Catholic, "after passing out a few letters at the 8:00 am Mass (a...

During the Great Irish Potato Famine in the mid1800's, antiCatholic zealots would occasionally bring large kettles of soup to Irish villages. The soup was free, but there was a catch. Before a starving Irishman could have even a sip of the soup, he would first have to renounce his Catholic faith. So strong was the Catholic faith in Ireland at the time that many starved to death rather than selling their souls. However, a few did drink the soup. They became known as "soupers" — a derisive label that would stick to their families for generations. Today, we are witnessing...

Michigan Supreme Court Justice says state's highest court is committed to strict interpretation of law By Fred Gray, News-Review staff writer Wednesday, July 6, 2005 11:53 AM EDT Corrigan Michigan Supreme Court Justice Maura Corrigan says the majority on the high court has been committed to "textualism," or the application of the objective meaning of the actual words of the statute or constitution, since 1999, when for the first time in 50 years justices nominated by the Republican Party became the majority of the court. "Fundamentally, a majority of the court believes a court's role is to interpret the law,...

Benedict's Blanket Replaces Bernadine's Seamless Garment In the June 2004 essay, Seamless Garment or Political Comforter? , Michael Ulmann accurately described the seamless garment as follows: In the 1970s, the late Joseph Cardinal Bernardin and his episcopal allies advanced the notion that Catholic politicians should not be judged only, or even primarily, by their position on abortion. Abortion was merely one strand in a rich and finely woven “seamless garment” of Catholic social teaching in defense of life. Numerous other issues, the bishops said, ought to be considered. Nearly one month after this essay was published, the now Pope...

The Crusaders There is a glow to the priest when he talks. Something lights him up inside, and its intensity is increased by the mild way he says what he's saying. The words, harsh and unyielding... *** If it sounds like a call from an Old Testament desert, that's not where the 49-year-old McCloskey operates. He's the priest of the power corridor, right there on K Street in Washington, where you can look out the windows of his Catholic Information Center and see the sharpies flocking on the sidewalk, organizing the complicated subleasing of various parts of the national treasure....

Inm 2000 alone, the Catholic bishops gave $472,000 in Campaign for human Development grants to ACORN - - the leftwing group now in the news for massive voter fraud. How much good could have been done with this money had it been doinated to right to life groups? The Campaign for Human Development needs to be scrapped.

Bishop Pilla on Communion to Pro-abortion Politicians Kathleen Willet Redle, M.F.A. What did Jesus do to the money changers and how did he describe the Scribes and Pharisees of his day? He called these leaders a brood of vipers, like whited sepulchers outwardly beautiful but within full of dead men’s bones. Then he used a whip to clear them out of the Temple, declaring, “My house shall be called the house of prayer; but you have made it a den of thieves!” (Mt 23:27,33, Mt 21:12, Jn 2:14-15). What is happening to God’s house of prayer today? Look around...

Pro-abortion Dennis KUCINICH: "I would refrain from Communion if Bishop Pilla asked me to, but the bishop has not done so."Kucinich's press secretary, Kathie Scarrah, in May of 2003: "He absolutely believes in the sanctity of life and that life begins at conception." Kucinich in a letter to the Plain Dealer: "I don't believe in abortion; few do. I do, however, believe in choice." Kucinich in interview with the San Francisco Chronicle: "I am going to continue to take a thoughtful approach, and that doesn't preclude the poor from having the government support their right to choose." Article about ORW in Rolling Stone Magazine July 29, 2004 Greetings! This week a feature article has been published in the extremely liberal Rolling Stone Magazine about our work to stop abortion in Wichita, Kansas. Although the article has flaws, it is without a doubt, the best treatment of a pro-life ministry ever published by this magazine. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The article, titled "One Man's God Squad," appearing in such a widely read publication is bound to elicit responses from both sides of the abortion issue. We pray that it will encourage and inspire all those who labor to save innocent lives...

Conservatives need to stop using liberalese. A liar should be called "clintonian" not a "McCarthyite." Likewise, Democrat scandals should not have the suffix "-gate" tagged on to the end of them, but rather the far more appropriate "-aquiddick." And so, when a Democratic scandal breaks, don't immediately name it "Bergergate" or "Socksgate." Watergate is not the father of all political scandals after which each new ones must be named. Scandals are bipartisan. When a new Democratic scandal erupts name after an old Democratic scandal. And no scandal is more deserving of commemoration than Chappaquiddick.

THE REMARKABLE PROLIFE WORDS OF JOHN EDWARDS The following excerpt from a January 31, 2004 New York Times article contains some amazingly pro-life quotes made by Vice-Presidential candidate John Edwards. The New York Times reports that once, as a trial attorney, John Edwards actually "channeled the words of an unborn baby girl." (Yes, it is also a minor miracle that the NYT would refer to a blob of tissue as an "unborn baby girl.") Referring to the unborn baby girl, Edwards states, "She speaks to you through me." Right now, that exact phrase only appears in google 502 times. Pro-lifers, we...

Still Silent: The Bishop of the Other Pro-Abortion Catholic Presidential CandidateFrom the pagans at "Catholics" for a Free Choice to Kill Children:At the same time, the movement has not made the most of the change. It is barely mentioned in speeches and newsletters. Unlike the biblical feasts and fatted calves that prolifers rolled out for Bernard Nathanson and Norma McCorvey, the reception to Kucinich's conversion has been far more muted. That is probably to his liking, but not necessarily helpful in our efforts to convince more middle grounders to shift their priorities more sharply to a prochoice stance. Kucinich's evolution...
