<p>When a nation faces deadly attacks on its citizens at home and abroad, it is only reasonable to expect that its leaders will take appropriate measures to increase security. And since security inevitably means restrictions, it is likewise only reasonable to expect a public debate over the question of how much individual liberty should be sacrificed for how much individual and national safety. That, however, is not the way our national debate has shaped up. From the public outcry over the Bush administration's measures to combat terrorism, one might suppose that America is well on the way to becoming a police state. A full-page newspaper ad by the American Civil Liberties Union, for instance, informs us that the Patriot Act, the administration's major security initiative, goes "far beyond fighting terrorism" and has "allowed government agents to violate our civil liberties--tapping deep into the private lives of innocent Americans."</p>

The home front is more worrisome than the battlefield. Democratic critics keep deconstructing federal reports about intelligence lapses that might have led to the tragedy of September 11. Looking for symptoms of defeat. The forces that win or lose wars are insidious, cumulative, and often hard to discern. Apparently dormant, they suddenly burst forth, and the entire complexion of the struggle without warning is forever changed; or the war itself can even be abruptly ended. We saw that in week three in Iraq: The quagmire suddenly became the cakewalk, leaving exasperated the nitpickers who had hours before predicted weeks of killing and thousands of dead. Surely, you are as angry at his self-serving blocking of the stimulus package etc. as the rest of America is? And don't you find his "Hillary Problem" - wife Linda lobbying for handouts to airlines outrageous? Handouts that little Tom had no trouble fast-tracking through Congress. Just watched the "Freedom Flight" - Continental's 737 with the 24 American military personnel on board leave Hainan's airport - live. Hate to admit it but CNN was only one with live pictures and they used a video phone to get them. Pictures weren't great, but they scooped everyone else - even Fox News!

Sometime in the last week, I heard a guest on one of the Fox News shows talking about the Bush administration looking for educators who had innovative ideas - even entrepeneurial programs. I know an educator who "thinks outside the box". Does anyone know who he should contact in the Bush administration? Thanks!

A California voter called into Rush Limbaugh today and said that liberal officials in California had decided NOT to count the more than 1 million absentee ballots yet uncounted in California. Their reason is it would not impact any elections voted on in California. It could however, give Bush the national popular vote!
