Europe is a landscape; East Asia a seascape. Therein lies a crucial difference between the 20th and 21st centuries. The most contested areas of the globe in the last century lay on dry land in Europe, particularly in the flat expanse that rendered the eastern and western borders of Germany artificial and exposed to the inexorable march of armies. But over the span of the decades, the demographic and economic axis of the Earth has shifted measurably to the opposite end of Eurasia, where the spaces between major population centers are overwhelmingly maritime. Because of the way geography illuminates and...

A case involving a 2008 protest by ‘radical queer’ activists at a Delta Township church comes to an end Gay rights activists who gained national attention when they disrupted Sunday morning services at Mount Hope Church in 2008 have reached an agreement that has ended the church’s suit against them. The agreement bans 13 of the protesters from entering the church, 202 S. Creyts Road in Delta Township, without permission and requires them to pay a total of $2,750 in damages. The church is also known as the Church of the Flags. The agreement also blocks the 13 protestors from...

I write to update you on my efforts to honor U.S. Navy sailors who perished in Tripoli, Libya over 200 years ago. I appreciate the opportunity to contact you. This month I introduced H.R.1497, legislation to repatriate, identify and honor with a military funeral U.S. Navy sailors who perished in Tripoli, Libya over 200 years ago. In September of 1804, American Sailors were killed in the explosion of the U.S. Ketch INTREPID in Tripoli Harbor. Thirteen U.S. Navy Sailors are buried in mass graves at two sites in Tripoli. Five Sailors are buried at the Old Protestant Cemetery in a...

Lansing couples a step closer to being legally wed Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope had to leave the country in 2004 to legally marry his partner Brad Rakowski. After a federal judge’s ruling Wednesday overturned California’s same-sex marriage ban, Swope is one step closer to having his marriage recognized by his own country. “It was a great ruling,” Swope said. “I was a little bit surprised but overall happy and pleased with it.” Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker’s ruling to overturn Proposition 8, the state’s ban on same-sex marriage passed by 52 percent of voters in 2008, has legitimate...

Monday, March 8,2010 Robo-calls attack Bernero At least three calls since Friday hit Lansing mayor on labor issues by Neal McNamara A series of robo-calls have gone out in the past few days attacking Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero on his labor record. At least one call went out on Friday around 4:30 p.m. and asked recipients to contact UAW President Ron Gettelfinger and ask him to not support Bernero for the Democratic nomination for governor. Rumors have circulated recently that Bernero will soon get the union’s endorsement. The robo-call says Bernero is "bad for labor." Another call went out over...

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The remains of Navy pilot Michael Scott Speicher returned to his Florida home on Thursday, 18 years after his FA-18 Hornet was shot down on the first night of the 1991 Gulf War. Speicher's remains arrived at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station around 3 p.m. About ten minutes later his coffin was rolled off the plane draped with the U.S. flag. It was to remain at the All Saints Chapel on the base overnight.

There were two naked women showering in downtown Lansing Wednesday afternoon — but, to the dismay of many male onlookers, they didn't want to eat any meat. The women, Ashley Kemp, 22, and Lindsay Rajt, 27, were showering on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), as part of the animal rights group’s “Clean Your Conscience” campaign touring the Midwest. The showering was a gimmick to attract attention to the fact that it takes 2,463 gallons of water to produce one pound of meat — the equivalent to about six months of showering. But the anti-meat message...

CHICHESTER, N.H. (AP) — A pastor in this quiet, picturesque New England town thought he was doing the Christian thing when he took in a convicted child killer who had served his time but had nowhere to go. But some neighbors of the Rev. David Pinckney vehemently disagree, one even threatening to burn his house down after officials could find no one else willing to take 60-year-old Raymond Guay.

The government says a 20-year prison sentence for a woman who committed arson at Michigan State University would be the toughest punishment ever in a case of so-called eco-terrorism. Marie Mason is due in federal court at 9 a.m. today. The explosion and fire at Michigan State's Agriculture Hall in 1999 was a protest against genetically modified crops. Damage exceeded $1 million. Prosecutors want a 20-year prison sentence for the 47-year-old Cincinnati woman. Mason's lawyer says that would be extreme. Mason has admitted other acts from 1999 through 2003, including fires at homes under construction in southeastern Michigan and Indiana....

After months of fending off campaign attacks from conservative opponent Tim Walberg and his supporters, U.S. Rep. Joe Schwarz, R-Battle Creek, is hearing it from the left just days before Tuesday's primary election. Late last week, the Ann Arbor-based Michigan Peaceworks and several Ann Arbor area residents demanded that Schwarz, a moderate, distance himself from a campaign brochure that claims a bill he supported to keep a religious group from demonstrating at military funerals was aimed at anti-war protesters. The dual-sided brochure includes a picture of Schwarz and a man holding a sign with an anti-war message. It states anti-war...
