Video footage from Wednesday's attempted armed robbery at a Six Corners market shows the store owner fending off an assailant who allegedly stuck a fake gun in his face. "He put it in my mouth," said the owner of Walnut Convenience Store, who pulled out a real gun after fighting 20-year-old Fernell Pelzer. Pelzer pleaded with the shop owner not to hurt him, according to ABC40 News, which obtained store surveillance footage of the crime being committed. "I say, 'I'm not gonna shoot ya,' and I was holding him till the cops got here, and that's what I did," the...

A 20-year-old man was arrested Wednesday evening after an alleged armed robbery attempt with a fake gun was thwarted by a shop owner with a real one. According to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney, around 10:20 p.m., Fernell Pelzer allegedly entered the Walnut Convenience store on the border of the Six Corners and Old Hill neighborhoods. Delaney said Pelzer ran into the store and confronted the shop owner before attempting to pistol whip him with what turned out to be a fake gun. A struggle ensued, according to police, and in the process, Pelzer had the tables turned on him...
  • 'No more people on the streets' heard as activists from Spfld No One Leaves demand fair housing…

    09/11/2014 1:47:21 PM PDT · by matt04 · 8 replies
The chants cut through the warm, humid air like an approaching cold front, prompting drivers to crane their necks and pedestrians to stop in their tracks on the sidewalk outside the U.S. Post Office on Liberty Street. "No justice, no peace, no more people in the streets." "What do we do when banks attack? Stand up, fight back." The protesters' numbers were few – less than 20 – but the collective voice of Springfield No One Leaves was mighty as the group took aim at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the beleaguered government-sponsored mortgage enterprises bailed out by taxpayers, and...

  • Bloomberg/MDA and Target again?

    09/07/2014 4:23:28 PM PDT · by matt04 · 10 replies
We all know Target caved to MDA and requested people not bring guns, which MDA took as a outright ban. According to some FB Posts and Tweets I saw recently it seems MDA or their members have realized that nothing has changed policy wise. I can't find anything official form MDA on a new campaign, but is seems like some of their members might have realized they were lied to and are not happy.
  • Worcester (MA) school bus video shows 'terrifying' confrontation between parents, driver

It's unclear what happened before the video started, but what happened afterward one parent could only describe as "terrifying." Video shot by a parent of a Quinsigamond Elementary School student Wednesday afternoon of what should have been a routine school bus stop showed young children crying and screaming, seemingly unable to leave the school bus they were riding in as parents shouted at the driver to let them off. In the video, shot near the corner of Perry Ave. and Harlem Street by parent Jessica Jimenez, parents curse and shout at the driver asking why she won't let the kids...
  • Tax forms could pose challenge for HealthCare.gov

    08/30/2014 10:55:08 AM PDT · by matt04 · 4 replies
If you got health coverage through President Barack Obama's law this year, you'll need a new form from your insurance exchange before you can file your tax return next spring. Some tax professionals are worried that federal and state insurance marketplaces won't be able to get those forms out in time, creating the risk of delayed tax refunds for millions of consumers. The same federal agency that had trouble launching HealthCare.gov last fall is facing the heaviest lift. The Health and Human Services Department must send out millions of the forms, which are like W-2s for people getting tax credits...
  • Saying Saying Ferguson 'could happen' in Holyoke, Spfld., Talbert Swan calls for special commissions

Saying that the civil unrest that has followed the recent fatal shooting of an unarmed black teen by a white police officer, in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, Mo., "could happen" in Springfield as well as Holyoke, the Rev. Talbert W. Swan II, president of the Greater Springfield NAACP, has requested that the mayors of these two cities establish a commission in each city to address issues that could prove "a powder keg." "Holyoke and Springfield are two urban centers that have a large population of persons of color," Swan said. "They are also two cities with a sordid...

While some city residents were enjoying a weekend highlighted by a bright Supermoon and the successful Springfield Jazz and Roots Festival, others found themselves involved in spats of violence that kept first responders and doctors at the Bay State Medical Center busy. The city's 9th homicide of the year took place Saturday around 5 p.m. when police arrived at William DeBerry Elementary School on Union Street in the city's Old Hill neighborhood to investigate after a Shotspotter activation and 911 calls. The victim, 26-year-old city resident Lamar P. Kelly, was found with a single gunshot wound and was, according to...

Former White House Press Secretary James Brady, who was famously shot during the attempt on then-President Ronald Reagan's life in 1981, has died. He was 73. "Jim touched the lives of so many and has been a wonderful husband, father, friend and role model," his family said in a statement. "We are enormously proud of Jim's remarkable accomplishments - before he was shot on the fateful day in 1981 while serving at the side of President Ronald Reagan and in the days, months and years that followed. Jim Brady's zest for life was apparent to all who knew him, and...

The federal government has not yet responded. Patrick sent a representative - Homeland Security Undersecretary Kurt Schwartz - to a select board meeting in Bourne...

  • What Just Happened at Market Basket This Weekend?

    07/21/2014 2:53:20 PM PDT · by matt04 · 36 replies
A big local story from this weekend was centered around Market Basket and its employees’ ongoing movement to re-install former CEO Arthur T. Demoulas. ... Why are employees protesting, anyway? OK, the long answer goes back decades. In the very short-term, Market Basket employees are extremely loyal to the former CEO, Demoulas, who was fired last month and replaced with Jim Gooch and Felicia Thornton. Two other executives were fired at the time, and seven more resigned the next day. A couple weeks back, employees outright demanded Demoulas be re-instated as CEO. When they didn’t hear an answer by the...

  • Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee could be used to house unaccompanied minors...

Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee is one of two sites in Massachusetts being considered by Gov. Deval Patrick to house children who cross the border into the United States illegally. The other site is Camp Edwards, part of a military reservation in Cape Cod. State Sen. Don Humason, a Westfield Republican who opposes the idea, confirmed that Patrick's office called him Thursday to give him a heads up about the proposal. Patrick, a Democrat, discussed the proposal during a press conference at 9:45 a.m. providing more details about his intent to accept a request by the U.S. government to...

The administration of Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy (D-WFP) has denied a request from federal officials to temporarily house up to 2,000 illegal immigrant children from Central America at a residence in his state for individuals with intellectual disabilities. ... According to Keith Phaneuf at CT Mirror, federal officials initially contacted the administration of Malloy, who is seeking a second term as governor this year, on July 3 regarding the possibility of a short-term lease to house, feed, and provide medical care to 1,000 to 2,000 of the unaccompanied illegal children who entered the U.S. through Mexico. The GSA reportedly asked...
  • Anti-Gunners Kill More Jobs with Bloomberg-Style Laws(Mossberg leaving CT)

    07/14/2014 9:22:35 AM PDT · by matt04 · 13 replies
America’s largest shotgun manufacturer has decided to move more of its business to the Republic of Texas. The news that O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc. chose not to expand their business in Connecticut shouldn’t really come as a surprise. States that have zealously pursued more restrictive gun control policies have seen their historically loyal firearm manufacturers begin an exodus to friendlier locales. Mossberg has decided to move more of its manufacturing process to Texas in light of Connecticut’s recent legislative attempts to demonize their industry; such as implementing a confiscation registration process, and outlawing future sales of various firearms categorized...
