Party on! White Sox clinch; Victory secures AL Central title for South Siders DETROIT -- The final out of Thursday's 4-2 White Sox victory over Detroit took every inch of first baseman Paul Konerko's 6-foot-2 frame to record. But once Konerko snared Placido Polanco's line drive, stranding runners at first and second, the on-field celebration began for the team's first American League Central title since 2000. Actually, it sort of began. Maybe it began but never really took complete flight. Konerko pumped his fist after making the catch, the same reaction shown by catcher A.J. Pierzynski as he ran out...

NEW YORK -- Reflecting vividly on that day 57 years and about a dozen miles away, Rachel Robinson smiled through the memories. "My big concern that morning was, how do I get to Brooklyn (from the hotel)? It was a hoary morning getting to the park," she said. "My five-month-old baby was dressed in California clothes, and he was chilled. "But Ruth Campanella's mom had a fur coat and she draped it over him, and I went to warm up his bottle, then we were all right." Rachel Robinson shrugged lightly. "Maybe that was my way of defending against the...

Jeff Weise, the 17-year-old named in newspaper reports as the gunman in the Red Lake school shooting, may have been investigated last year in connection with a shooting threat to the school, according to posts made on a Nazi website. Over a five-month period between March and August 2004, someone identifying himself as Weise posted numerous messages on a talkboard hosted by Nazi.org, the website of the Libertarian National Socialist Green party. The party promotes a Nazi philosophy of racial purity. In March 2004, a chatroom participant tagged Todesengel ("angel of death") began a thread titled "Native American Nationalist?" and...

Infuriated by President Bush's "unprincipled attack against gay people and our families," activists did an about-face Wednesday -- they shifted the battleground over gay marriage to the Cook County Board. Ald. Tom Tunney (44th), Chicago's first openly gay alderman, and Rick Garcia, political director of Equality Illinois, said they intend to push for a County Board vote directing Clerk David Orr to issue marriage licenses to gay couples. County Commissioner Mike Quigley, who spearheaded a move to give benefits to same-sex partners of county employees, said he was willing to try to assemble a majority for gay marriage. But only...

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German man who taught his dog Adolf to give a Hitler salute by raising his right paw has been charged with violating Germany's anti-Nazi laws, a Berlin court said on Wednesday. Police investigated after members of the public complained they had seen the man giving the stiff-arm "Hitler salute" and telling his dog: "Adolf sit, give me the salute!," a court spokeswoman said. As he was questioned by police the man ordered his dog to give them the Hitler salute as well, she said. Germany has strict laws banning the use of Nazi symbols, but the...

It’s bad enough that the American Cancer Society (ACS) wastes millions of dollars on cruel, irrelevant experiments on cats, primates, mice, and other animals in a futile attempt to cure cancer, now the ACS is helping to cause cancer by serving unhealthy, carcinogenic animal products at its fundraising gala, the Cattle Baron’s Ball. Gala attendees can eat their way to the hospital thanks to the meat-laden menu, featuring rack of lamb, beef tenderloin, fried chicken, and pork loin. Numerous studies have linked the consumption of meat to the development of cancer. Scientists suspect that the estrogen from zeranol and other...

I've been searching for this for quite a while. The clip (found at the link) is a recording of a REAL telephone conversation between President Lyndon Johnson and his tailor. Johnson is ordering half-a-dozen pair of pants because he's putting on "about 20 pounds a month now." Enjoy! *BURP!*

Why Liberals Are Such a Bore!Have you ever tried to “lighten up” around liberals? It’s about as easy as getting loud guffaws from a group of 17th century Calvinists. They are the living embodiments of Dana Carvey’s famous character, “the Church lady.” I seriously wonder if any group of people have ever taken themselves so seriously as American liberals since the Inquisition. I recently did a Internet search for Dennis Miller’s latest comments on Iraq, the Europeans, President Bush, North Korea and the babbling Senator Byrd from West Virginia. One of the better list of quotations was on a site...

It’s never fun to admit failure. But Russia’s 13 percent flat tax forces me to confess a certain degree of incompetence. For 10 years, I’ve been working in Washington to replace our convoluted tax code with a simple and fair flat tax. But as every taxpayer can attest, my efforts have not borne fruit. Yet in Russia, President Vladimir Putin -- the former head of the Soviet KGB -- implemented a flat tax in 2001. Not only a flat tax, but a flat tax with a 13 percent rate, four percentage points lower than the supposedly “radical” plan espoused by...

War party: Debating Iraq at Ozzy'sElizabeth Taylor and Justin Timberlake were the guests of honor at a benefit Elton John gave with Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne Wednesday night in L.A. But the names of two other well-known people were on everybody's lips: Bush and Saddam. "We all discussed whether to move forward with this event tonight," Sharon told the crowd, which had gathered in the garden of her Beverly Hills home to support Elton's AIDS foundation and her own colon-cancer charity. "We decided to continue because, war or no war, we are all fighting the war against AIDS and cancer,"...

Just heard something on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" that made me laugh out loud! I just had to share it with my FReeper FRiends. If you're unfamiliar with the program, he does a bit called "In The Year 2000", during which he makes absurd/funny predictitions regarding events that will take place "in the year 2000." (They've been doing the bit for years now, which only makes it funnier.)This one is a gem... "In the year 2000..."Christina Aguilera, while being prepared for surgery, alomst dies on the opererating table, when doctors discover that no amount of swabbing can make her...

In Fort Gibson, Oklahoma on December 7, 1999 a 13-year-old boy shot four classmates at school with his fatherçs handgun. His father had purchased the gun six years earlier at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart had stopped stocking handguns in its stores in 1993, but not before the boy's father had purchased the gun that would bring tragedy six years later. Wal-Mart is now the world's largest corporation. With annual sales of $218 billion, Wal-Mart rivals the gross domestic product of the world's 22nd largest economy, Austria. Wal-Mart is the world's largest overall retailer, and sells more groceries, toys, and jewelry than any...

Friday September 13, 19:09 PM Iraq would "teach US lesson" if it attacked: AzizIraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz said Baghdad would "teach (the Americans) a lesson" if they attacked and Iraq did not accept the conditions spelled out by US President George W. Bush in his UN speech. But Aziz, in remarks to Dubai-based Saudi MBC television, excerpts of which were made available to AFP ahead of broadcast at 1500 GMT, said the Iraqi leadership had yet to formulate Baghdad's "final positions" on the current standoff over its alleged pursuit of weapons of mass destruction. "Iraq does not accept...

US 'was partly to blame' for terror attacks' By Stacy Humes-Schulz in Washington Published: September 4 2002 0:17 | Last Updated: September 4 2002 0:17 A majority of Europeans think that US foreign policy is partially to blame for the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. A survey of American and European attitudes towards foreign relations found that 55 per cent of respondents from six European countries agreed that US policy had contributed to the attacks. The poll also found widespread public support within the US for an invasion of Iraq, with 75 per cent of American...

Posted Sunday, September 1, 2002; 3:38 p.m. EST Twelve months have passed. The debris is gone. The thousands who worked tirelessly to rescue and recover those who died no longer dig through the night. The twisted remains of New York's two biggest buildings no longer stand as reminders of the worst attack in American history. But I haven't changed. When I go to ground zero now, I feel as shocked, angry and resolute as I did a year ago. On Sept. 14, 2001, I flew over the site in a helicopter with President George W. Bush and Governor George Pataki....

Arabs Urged Face US Threats Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is urging Arab and Muslim countries to unite in the face of US threats and "foreign conspiracies" as Washington prepares for a possible attack on Iraq. Iran's official IRNA newsagency said Assad reiterated Syria's opposition to any US military strike on Baghdad and called for "deeper unity and solidarity among Arab and Muslim countries in the face of American threats against the region." Enemies of Baghdad Assad was speaking after a meeting in Damascus with Mohammed Sader, a senior Iranian foreign ministry official. Syria and Iran, both erstwhile enemies of Baghdad,...
