  • Does Islam believe in Evolution?

Rare knowledge indeed! Perhaps it is ironic, but Muslims developed a theory of evolution about a millennium ago. They never thought it was so revolutionary, because the Qur’ân expresses human development generally in evolutionary terms already (no reference to fish or anything, but the divinely guided stages of human development are familiar to all Muslims). What is unique about the modern conception of Darwin’s variation of the theory is that it seems to oppose belief in God (even though Darwin never meant to do that). Like Darwin himself, Muslims have never thought there ever needed to be any contradiction. As another irony, it is probably also true that most Muslims today think the idea came from Darwin. This might explain the creationist movement that started among Muslims in the past couple of decades, due to the unfortunate modern association between the concept of inter-species evolution and disbelief in God.
