Just when you thought there couldn't be any more players in the ongoing soap opera over the hunt for President Obama's original birth certificate and his constitutional eligibility for office, there comes yet another name: Elena Kagan. Yes, the same Elena Kagan nominated by the commander in chief to be the next justice on the U.S. Supreme Court has actually been playing a role for some time in the dispute over whether Obama is legally qualified to be in the White House.

President Obama just released his tax returns. Much to my surprise I discovered he filled out an IRS form Schedule C "Profit or Loss from Business" claiming a $5,661,666 business profit from the sales of his books. According to the IRS, in order to be able to file a Schedule C one must be "...involved in the activity (writing) with continuity and regularity." If you aren't, then your income goes on line 21 of your 1040 just like everyone else. The reason for this is simple, people could write off their vacations just so long as they wrote about it...

WASHINGTON — In college, as he was getting involved in protests against the apartheid government in South Africa, Barack Obama noticed, he has written, “that people had begun to listen to my opinions.” Words, the young Mr. Obama realized, had the power “to transform”: “with the right words everything could change -— South Africa, the lives of ghetto kids just a few miles away, my own tenuous place in the world.”

Selecta, a German toymaker, carves whimsical cars and characters from native woods, colors them with vegetable dyes and coats them in silky beeswax. No lead, no toxic varnishes. Not even waste -- the company heats its factory with leftover woodchips. Just the kind of toymaker in demand after scares about tainted playthings from China. But this holiday season, Selecta is preparing to pull out of the U.S. market. Its problem, executives say, is consumer legislation that is adding crushing costs to selling toys in America. The law, which takes effect Feb. 10, was passed by Congress in response to recalls...

He now faces the biggest challenge of his young life. He suffered permanent spinal cord injuries in a motorcycle accident this past September and is paralyzed from the neck down. According to his Web site on www.caringbridge.org, Ian may have had a seizure prior to hitting a curb on Woodward, catapulting his body into a Christopher Reeve-like accident. When EMS arrived, Ian’s body was still convulsing.

Please include Diane in your prayers. Diane has been a close friend of my friend for many years; I have met and socialized with her on several occasions. She is a devoted wife and mother of two high-school aged girls. After recovering from lung cancer, a recent MRI shows two, or maybe three masses in her brain. Please pray for her, her family and those entrusted with her care. Thanks very much.

I found out over the summer that a house on my street (just a handful of houses away) is now a "group home". According to another neighbor the residents are "highly to moderately trainable adults". Supposedly there is one adult supervisor there for about every 4-5 residents. There has already been at least one incident; one of the residents was off his meds, flopping around on the neighbors pool cover and wouldn't leave. I've just recently found out that one of the residents is on the Public Sex Offender Registry---his offense, criminal sexual conduct- third degree (multi variables.) I live...

This is something to think about when negative people are doing their best to rain on your parade. So remember this story the next time someone who knows nothing and cares less tries to make your life miserable. A woman was at her hairdresser's getting her hair styled for a trip to Rome with her boyfriend. She mentioned the trip to the hairdresser, who responded, "Rome? Why would anyone want to go there? It's crowded and dirty and full of Italians. You're crazy to go to Rome. So, how are you getting there?" "We're taking Continental," was the reply. "We...

One of every 73 U.S. households filed for bankruptcy last year, an all-time high, according to the American Bankruptcy Institute. One of 69 filed in Michigan, ranking the state 19th for the most filed bankruptcies. This comes as no surprise to Pontiac resident Noah Coleman, 22. Coleman said he represents the most poorly educated social class when it comes to financial literacy, and the reason for so many bankruptcies is people are not being taught how to manage their money. A recent survey conducted by Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy, a Washington, D.C., firm that works to ensure that...

WATERFORD TWP. - Frustrated after being told by school officials he could not visit with elementary students from his church during lunch hours, a Waterford youth pastor has decided to run for the Waterford Board of Education. The Rev. Joshua Combs, a 23-year-old children's minister at the 5,500-member Faith Baptist Church, started meeting with groups of children inside Waterford elementary schools in the fall. "They were social visits," he said. "Sometimes we'd chat. Other times we had Bible study." Alerted by teachers, school officials told Combs his actions were in violation of the separation of church and state. Joshua Combs'...
