A 67-year-old jewelry store owner was left beaten and bloodied after a gang of thieves attacked him and robbed his store in downtown Brooklyn on Thursday evening, police and law enforcement sources said. (WTNH)– Protesters have taken to the streets and are causing traffic delays Thursday morning, in support of graduate student-teachers who are fighting to start their own union at Yale. The spokesperson for the protesters in Local 33 of Unite Here, CJ Macklin, tells News 8 that eight protesters will sit down while eight “marshals” (other protesters) will stand around them for protection, at the intersection of Chapel Street and College Street. HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH)- According to a new Quinnipiac University poll, President Donald Trump‘s approval rating with American voters is nearing an all time low. That’s according to the survey that was released on May 10th, 36 percent of voters said they have a negative opinion of Mr. Trump, down from 40 percent last year. BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH)– Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim is filing the papers Friday to become the latest Democrat seeking the nomination for Governor. Ganim, who served seven years in federal prison for corruption while in office, made a remarkable comeback in the Bridgeport municipal election in November of 2015. The Bridgeport mayor has asked the State Elections Enforcement Commission for a decision on whether or not he can qualify for public financing. The public financing law appears to forbid public funding for those convicted of corruption. The agency is expected to rule on his request sometime next month.

PLAINFIELD, Conn. (WTNH) — A Plainfield High School student is faced with charges related to having a photo of himself with a firearm. Police are charging a 15-year-old student of Plainfield High School with Breach of Peace, after it was revealed he had a picture of himself with a firearm. ELLINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) — Court papers show a popular fitness tracker called a Fitbit is a key piece of evidence in an Ellington murder case. Richard Dabate, 40, was charged earlier this month with killing his wife, Connie, in December of 2015. Court papers just released show data from Connie’s Fitbit, which records things like motion and heart rate. Connie’s Fitbit disproved Richard’s timeline of an intruder killing his wife. Richard told police his wife was killed in a home invasion by a tall, obese man with a deep voice. Police say Dabate had a pregnant mistress.

LOCKHART, TX (WTNH)– A 27-year-old Texas teacher, who is accused of having sex with one of her students, is trending after her smiling mugshot went viral. According to the Mirror, married science teacher, Sarah Fowlkes, was arrested for having an “improper relationship” with a 17-year-old student of Lockhart High School in Lockhart, Texas. EW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– Many more people applied for gun permits last year than the year before. According to the Norwich Bulletin, there was a 73 percent jump during that period. Some believe it’s partly because of last year’s presidential election. The paper reports the increase was for pistol permit applications from 2015 to 2016. Senator Richard Blumenthal will unveil new legislation on Monday, in an effort to strengthen federal laws against hate crimes and threats.
